Duke puts his own fingerprint on the standard music genre

IMPORTANT CATEGORIES OF DUKE

1. Jungle music
• cotton club was club for whites and entertainment was black.
• black and tan venue where races mixed as patrons
• bubber miley – gut bucket sounds, so far away from European
sound, making the horn talk…
• elington effect- the color found in musical pieces
2. MOODS
• blue mood
• written down and improvised
• took experiences and life cycle and put it into musical notation
• sweet music is white (barry manilow) and black (armstrong)
3. Song
• tin pan alley  mainstream
• louis Armstrong = great composer of American song
• mainstream = idealistic, but duke and African American = realistic
• do nothing until you hear from me
o double standard…men cheating.
o Also known as conchurto – rivary between soloists (trumpet)
and rest of big band
• Turns songs into instrumental pieces

we value BIG in our culture, small is trivial. Blow up music to last longer and
get it performed in places where it would be considered art
• duke did this by creating – extended pieces and concert pieces
o not to be danced to
o black white tan beige ??

duke was so successful he kept his band together all his life and composed
until he died. Over 40 years

during 1960’s wrote sacred concert pieces, preformed in westminister

abbey, now say with music what I have been saying for years on my knees.
He has finally made “jazz” ART!!

Early jazz, singing was very important. When it moves into night clubs,
singing was important (Armstrong). During swing, singers represented
different section in big band. Singer was very very important
• Prototype of all singers during jazz – BILLIE HOLIDAY!!!!!!!
• Rewrite melody, Rhthym and words

BILLIE HOLIDAY –
• Her life was tragic.
• Originality, influence,
• Lack of sef esteem
• Born in 1915, teenage mother, little education
• Reportedly raped at age 10, 1930’s became musician
• Listened to recordings of Bessie smith and Armstrong from madam
she was a messenger
• Public appeal was never great tho
• 1937 toured with count
• 1938 first black female soloist performed with all whites band
• when toured with count had to blacken face, and toured with whites
just awful!!!
• ‘GREAT PERSONAL EMOTION’’
o great singer = great communicator not necessarily great
