Eco-Friendly Furniture: an Introduction (2013-10-15 11:52) - HFR

Since the 1990s where mutterings of global warming and climate change had become increasingly talked about, people have been looking for any way in which they can help the environment. From energy saving light bulbs to compost heaps at the bottom of the garden, there is almost an endless amount of ways to care for the planet through everyday objects and processes, so why should furniture be any dierent?

Origins of Eco-friendly Furniture The rst real signs of recycling materials for craftsmanship came from the early part of the 20th Century, where the famous artist Pablo Picasso (below) began to create collages from old newspapers and other used materials. This theme of recycled materials has grown signicantly up to 2013 with whole wardrobes and dressers being crafted from used materials as well as being signicantly better for the environment.

Ranging from reclaimed wood such as timber and pine to bamboo and metal, there are plenty of eco-friendly resources to make a wide range of products. An example would be the [3]Amerlin Recycled Boatwood Coee Table with Shelf (pictured below) which is constructed from 100 % reclaimed materials. The frame is put together with reclaimed steel that has been slightly brushed whilst the main body is recycled hardwood, mainly from old shing boats.

[4]

When looking at eco-friendly or green furniture it is important to make sure the wood is actually recycled and if not it is best to look for products crafted from bamboo as this is not a threatened wood and there is an abundance of it on planet earth. It is also important to look at where the item has been produced and where the materials are from. The most environmentally friendly products are those whose materials have been sourced locally, however some of the most charming pieces of eco-friendly furniture are unique due to the exotic wood that is used, making them better for the environment than a general brand new piece of oak furniture.

One more tip I will leave you with is to always try and keep old furniture, especially if it can be disassembled easily and each material separated. This is because it looks like eco-friendly furniture has earned its right to stay topical and popular in the foreseeable future due to its character, durability and needless to say, its environmentally friendly aspect.

Next time you are looking into getting new furniture, please do have a look around for eco-friendly furniture as you may be pleasantly surprised at the range and charm of the products on oer and although you wont be saving the planet single-handedly you will be making an impact into combating climate change and global warming.

New England Furniture: How it got its name (2013-10-16 14:57) - HFR
A quick Google search of the term New England suggests it is only known as a North-Eastern region of the USA, in particular the highly popular American Football Team, the New England Patriots. However adding the word Furniture to that search term unlocks a door to a new interpretation of New England, one that is designed to capture the charm and characteristics of this historic region.

Origins of New England Furniture New England furniture is thought to have got its two major characteristics from the climate of the New England region. As this vast area spans over 500 miles, it is unsurprising to hear that it experiences a wide range of climates. The North experiences humid conditions along with long winters consisting of heavy snow and freezing temperatures. Alternatively the South has the same humidity but with shorter winters and longer summers, often resulting in summer thunderstorms.

This meant that homes had to be designed and crafted to be able to cope with this distinct battle of the elements as snow and thunderstorms occurred up and down the coast as well as inland New England. They had to be sturdy, robust and built to last, especially in these harsh conditions. The same can be said for New England Furniture, with one of its mannerisms is to be strong and long lasting, which is why it is always made of solid wood, particularly timber as it is often very durable.

Another distinct characteristic of New England Furniture is that it is almost always white in colour or white painted. Again, there are signs to show that this is linked to the heavy snowfall throughout the New England region, particularly in the North. It is also suggested that the colour white resembles the New England coastline where striking white lighthouses often stand alone against a backdrop of white spray being thrown around by the Atlantic Ocean. My personal favourite theory is that many of the churches and chapels throughout New England are painted a crisp white, portraying the purity and cleanliness that New England Furniture also exudes.

I hope this article has given you a quick insight into what is meant by the term New England Furniture and where it originates from. The key ingredient to take away from this is that New England Furniture is characterised by its pure, white appearance and its sturdiness and ability to last. Personally I think New England furniture has more charm than any other furniture Ive seen, so I cannot recommend it enough.

5 Courier Nightmare Stories that put most to shame (2013-10-22 09:39) - HFR
Im sure weve all experienced issues with home deliveries from a letter being a few days late or a parcel being left outside for all to see, I know I certainly have. However, most peoples experiences would be considered as excellent service in comparison to some tales. Here are ve courier nightmare stories that Im sure have haunted the customers every time theyve ordered something since.

Courier Nightmares: 1.) We will dive straight in at the deep end with probably one of the most extreme cases I have ever read about concerning a courier issue. During the run-up to Christmas one year, a driver for a very well known courier rm faked his own kidnapping in order to steal 205 parcels! Not only did he steal over 13,000 worth of products, he also wasted almost 100 hours of police time but was subsequently jailed for a mere 32 weeks. Not only this but the delivery rm could only identify around 100 of the parcels and could not even nd out where the others had originally come from!

2.) Another horror story, this time on the other side of the globe in Australia, showing you that issues can occur wherever you order your items. Setting the scene, the customer was having an expensive piece of electrical equipment delivered and had received an email and call to say it had been dispatched, although their website wasnt working to track the item. They received a call to say it would be delivered the next day and unfortunately the customer was out at the time they came so expected it to be delivered again, even though they had left clear instructions to leave it with someone in the sales oce of their apartment.

The next day came and the customer had left really specic instructions to make sure it was delivered successfully. However they spent from 9.30am to 1.00pm being called by the courier rm and the driver and having to call back multiple times as the rm or driver were not picking up. The driver eventually answered and spoke in an aggressive loud manner about how he will deliver when it is convenient for him, giving a time of 3.30pm and stating he will not leave it with anyone else, despite the customer saying it was ok.

At 3.50pm, 20 minutes after the driver said he would be there, he turned up and gave them their item along with someone elses parcel, asking the customer to deliver it to another apartment within the building! This is baing on its own, let alone after the driver himself said he would not leave their parcel with anyone else for security reasons always best to know your neighbours!

3.) One customer came home to nd the standard letter of we attempted to deliver your item but you werent in and that the parcel had been left in a safe place (the customers recycling bin at the end of their back laneway) Usually this would have been ne if the customers bin had been in their garden but the reason it was at the end of the lane was because it was a collection day! When the customer went to get the parcel, they expected the worst and sure enough the bin was empty, recycling and the parcel gone. Fortunately the customer was given a full refund, which is the least the courier/supplier could have done.

4.) This next story has probably already caught your eye in the past as a video of it achieved 200,000 viewers in one day on YouTube, certainly earning the courier rm some publicity. It shows a delivery driver for a renowned courier rm strolling up to a gated property and launching a boxed TV monitor over the wall with some force, then casually walking back to his van and away to his next delivery. What makes this action worse is that the customer was actually home and was awaiting delivery but the driver didnt even bother to ring the bell on the gate and instead delivered the item with his own highly unorthodox method!

5.) Finally, a short and simple story. The parcel was given to a random passerby in the customers street, simply because they said they were the customers neighbour and always took delivery of their parcels. The passerby and parcel were never seen again by the customer.

Furniture from recycled Wooden Pallets (2013-10-24 12:26) - HFR

We loved the creativity of this [1]youtube user, who have used recycled wooden pallets to produce a stunning bedroom backdrop with minimal work and money. Surprisingly simple yet highly eective, you could take this even further with various varnish/paint eects as well as experimenting with other materials in other rooms and even with dierent shades of wood to add to the reclaimed look. Not only appealing on the eye, this piece is also eco-friendly and great for the environment as well as your bank account.

Light Shadow Trick - Interior Bright Ideas (2013-11-01 11:05) - HFR

Do you have a constant shadow appearing on your lampshade and want to get rid of it? We have had the same issue recently but found a simple solution to get rid of the light shadow within your lampshade from the famous interior designer; Rebecca Robeson from California. Light Shadow Trick Within the video below, Rebecca teaches us a valuable trick if you have a lamp with a clear light bulb as this is what casts the shadow, not the lampshade.

She shows you what happens when you put a clear light bulb in a lamp, as you can see the line that she points out in the video.

[1]

Rebecca points out the shadow within the lampshade

This line is not what you think it is as you might think it is the seam in the lamp shade but as she shows you in the video, it is not.

The seam can be moved around the lampshade but the line just stays there because its a shadow. A shadow that is created as a result of that light bulb.

Now watch as Rebecca takes the clear light bulb out and replaces it with a white frosted bulb. Although it doesnt even have to be a frosted bulb it could just be a white bulb. 28

This is a very clever and simple method to rid your lamps of a light shadow. Although Rebecca uses a hallway lamp as her example in this instance, there is no reason to suggest why this trick wouldnt work on other lampshades if a shadow was occurring. For example, you may wish to use a frosted bulb on your [5]bedside table lamp or even from your ceiling lampshades.

The best part about this tip is that frosted light bulbs are of a similar price to clear bulbs, so it

How to Shabby Chic Furniture (2013-11-02 15:42) - HFR

We recently stumbled upon an interesting and helpful video of how to shabby chic furniture by a wonderful vlogger called Rocky. She gives a really insightful and easy to follow guide on how to give a piece of furniture the ever popular shabby chic look. Rocky uses a small table in her actual video, but this technique can be transferred to almost any piece of wooden furniture.

[1]

The second-hand table before the work was done to it.

Before we look at the video and process, Rocky has kindly taken the time to introduce herself and her video:

Hi, Im Rocky, fashion and lifestyle vlogger on youtube :) My channel features lots of dierent videos from hauls, to lookbooks, DIYs to tags and silly games. Crafty DIY is great fun and can change a bland piece of furniture into a unique feature in your room. In this video I show you how to paint and customise a little table to give it that fashionable shabby chic look. Enjoy! x How to Shabby Chic Furniture Firstly, here is a list of items that Rocky suggests you will need:

A Piece of Furniture Sanding Block Coarse & Fine Sandpaper Paint (she used a wall and ceiling paint from Wilkinson in the colour Twine) Paint Brush Small Screwdriver (optional) Furniture Wax & Cloth Fablon (Sticky-back plastic) Paper Ruler

The rst thing you are going to need is obviously some furniture and Rocky is using a little table that she got second hand from a furniture shop. As you can see from the video, its looking a bit battered and has got some damage on the top as well. Step 1 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Sanding So, the rst thing you are going to want to do is get a sanding block and some coarse sand paper. Wrap the sand paper around the block and start sanding. You can get sand paper and blocks like these at most DIY stores.

You can see the dierence between sanded and not sanded in the image below:

Step 2 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Painting Do this all over the table until all the varnish is sanded o. Then when its all sanded, give it a quick wipe down and you can start painting. Rocky used a house paint, the same kind of paint she would use on the walls or the ceilings and its from Wilkinson in the colour twine. You want to paint this on using the appropriate brush size depending on how big your furniture is. Let the rst coat dry and then do another coat.

If your piece has detail in it like Rockys, you can do what she does by taking a small screw driver and scratching away the paint in the grooves. This makes the details stand out and makes the piece look even 32

more antique and distressed. Another thing you can do to make it look older is to take some ne sand paper on the same block you used earlier and just bu o some of the paint on the corners and the edges, where the paint would naturally come o through use. Once youve nished with that, brush o any dust that might have fallen.

Step 3 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Waxing Then the next thing you do to add a bit of character and protect the furniture is to apply furniture wax. Take an old cloth or a piece of fabric, wipe it through the wax then wipe it on to the surface.

Step 4 of How to Shabby Chic Furniture: Adding a Fablon Top The next thing Rocky does is to cover the top of the table because its got some damage. This would not be applicable to all pieces but we think it is a wonderful idea regardless of whether it was damaged or not. To do this, Rocky uses fablon also known as sticky back plastic. She measures out the size of the top of the table and cuts out a template in paper to check that it ts.

When youve done that roll out your fablon and use something to hold down the corners, Rocky has used Spice Jars. Then put your template in the corner, draw around it and cut it out. Rocky simply explains

the way fablon works is that it has a lm on the back and when you pull that o it is sticky underneath.

When applying it to the top of the table you want to peel and fold a strip of the lm backwards, line it up and slowly pull the lm from underneath, whilst pressing down the fablon as you go. When youve pulled out all the lm, rub it down making sure you get out any air bubbles and making sure it goes into the corners and the edges.

[4]

Pulling back the Fablon whilst smoothing it down

Thats it! Rocky also suggests that you could always add a piece of glass to the top if you wanted to.

How to Clean Wood and Care for Wooden Furniture (2013-11-06 13:21) - HFR
When purchasing any kind of furniture, it is always helpful to know how to give each piece the best possible care whether it is made out of wood, leather or metal as well as various other materials. The basis of this article is to give you tips and tricks on how to clean wood and care for wooden furniture such as Oak, Pine and Timber.

[1]

Before you learn how to clean wood and look after your wooden furniture it is important to know about the wood you are cleaning and to look to see if the furniture had any special instructions about how to clean and care for it, such as products to avoid using on it. How to Clean Wood - Wooden Furniture Care Using Polish Wax Polish is a very popular method and is readily available. However, this is not essential and should only be used if used correctly. Firstly, only wax polish should be used; no spray or silicone polishes and you must use the same wax polish every time or you risk ruining your wooden furniture. Secondly is the actual application of polish. You should only apply wax polish once over a year, or at the most twice. You should wipe down the item with a damp cloth and apply a small amount of polish using 36

a duster, brush or cloth. After applying the polish, dont wait too long to wipe the surface with a clean brush or cloth as it may be harder to polish o and could leave marks.

[2] cloth

An example of polishing wood with a

Dusting Although Polishing is helpful yet not essential, it is very important that you at least dust and clean your furniture, preferably once a week. It can be dusted with an average cloth and then cleaned with a cloth that has been in warm water and a small amount of dish soap. However, be careful not to drench the cloth, it should be damp/moist but not soaking. Finally any tight gaps or crevices use an old toothbrush or paintbrush to get into these harder areas.

General Care Other things to think about include keeping furniture out of direct sunlight whenever possible to avoid any fading or long lasting damage and to use fabrics, coasters and cloths when placing anything upon your furniture. These can also add some charm and colour to your home as well as protecting your furniture from plates, ornaments, drinks or vases leaving a mark.

Finally, be careful with certain objects around your wood furniture and try to avoid heat, chemicals and sharp objects. This can include, hot drinks, alcohol, solvents, plastic and you should always lift items instead of sliding them along wooden furniture.

Now the plasma television, oversized sectional sofa and comfy chairs lled the space appropriately. Touches of brilliant color tied the room together with artwork, pillows, books and accessories.

Winter Trends Sumptuous opulence Taking inspiration from popular lm and television period dramas, the heritage look is most denitely in. Characterised by the use of rich colours and antique-style furnishing, this trend is perfect for bringing a touch of opulence to your home.

Bright whites For those who prefer a simpler, streamlined style, white interiors are right on-trend. They work brilliantly in any room, from a glossy restaurant-style kitchen to a tranquil spa bathroom. Contemporary white interiors are simple to create and couldnt be easier to accessorise.

Using white also allows the maximum level of natural light to be reected around the space, perfect for brightening your home on dull winter days. This will make small areas feel larger. You could also hang mirrors on walls or over mantelpieces to make rooms seem even more spacious. Neutral walls also make the perfect foil for your treasured canvases or paintings.

This type of decor is also perfect for displaying your favourite mementos in unusual ways. Drape colourful kilims on walls or over the back of sofas, display precious shells on a dresser or show o a collection of quirky vintage hats by hanging them on the back of a door. How to distress furniture and its uses (2013-11-21 10:58) - HFR

One of the hottest trends right now is distressed furniture. A high-impact look that combines functionality with exquisite charm, it is easy to achieve and works well in any room. This quick guide has been created to give you a quick overview of distressed furniture and to give you advice on how to distress furniture yourself.

What is distressed furniture? Part of the current fashion for shabby chic and distressed furniture is characterised by its unnished surfaces, giving it a delightful antique feel. Wooden or metal furniture is articially aged to give it a lovely vintage appearance, as if it has already been used.

This pre-loved look is extremely fashionable for large pieces such as Welsh dressers, dining tables and chairs, as well as dressing tables and bed frames.

How to distress furniture? The technique usually involves applying coarse sandpaper or steel wool to the item to partially remove the top layer of paint.

If there is no coating on the surface then one may be applied, allowed to dry and subsequently sanded. To create a really unusual look, several layers of dierent coloured paint may be used. Distressed furniture can either be new nished pieces that are then deliberately aged, or furniture that is built using salvaged or reclaimed materials that are already partially worn (Such as the item above).

Tips on How to use distressed furniture One of the most delightful aspects of distressed furniture is that it has an easy, relaxed and rustic style that suits most homes. Whether using it to create a sumptuous and romantic bedroom or to add character to a bustling kitchen, it is an incredibly versatile look.

A distressed dining table makes a dramatic centrepiece for a room. Dress it up with a silk table runner and candles for a sophisticated look or keep it fresh and informal with just a bowl of zingy limes in the middle. The unusual surface is the star attraction so use place mats instead of a tablecloth to show it o as much as possible.

Your living room provides lots of opportunities to incorporate shabby chic or distressed furniture. Display pretty mismatched china plates and teacups on a pale dresser to bring a touch of quirky vintage charm to your home.

Wooden and metal coee or occasional tables also respond well to the distressed treatment. Add a dash of elegant style to your bedroom with a distressed bed frame. Including a delicate mirrored vanity table or even a chaise longue will complete the opulent eect. The distressing process can also be applied to smaller accessories, such as mirror and picture frames, coasters and placemats and even curtain poles and decorative nials.

To give your home instant chic with a quirky twist, try incorporating some distressed furniture. Beautiful yet practical, it is a stunning trend that suits virtually any interior.

Home Library - an idea for a spare room (2013-11-22 10:29) - HFR

Although many of us are turning to e-readers as a convenient way to carry large numbers of books with us while travelling, there is nothing to beat the sheer old-fashioned pleasure of curling up in a cosy armchair with a real page-turner.

While the idea of devoting an entire space to books might seem a little indulgent, it can be a fabulous way to make the most of any spare rooms you may have. Home libraries are becoming increasingly popular, not only as intellectual status symbols but as a place to relax and retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Designing your home library The beauty of books is that they can be accommodated in any room, regardless of shape or size. The easiest way to begin creating a home library is to install a selection of bookshelves. If your room is an unusual shape then you may decide to invest in bespoke furniture to maximum ecient use of the space.

When determining how many shelves you will need, an approximate gure can be calculated by allowing around one foot of shelving per 10 books. Obviously this will vary if your volumes are particularly narrow or especially over-sized.

Ensure that shelving is deep enough to accommodate larger books. Many bookcases also allow you to adjust the height of the shelves. Store bigger books low down to avoid possible injury when reaching to retrieve them and remember that it is better to stack very tall books on their sides to avoid damaging their spines.

The above bookcase is a perfect example of a piece that would immediately enhance any home library and is available [4]here.

Organising your books

Specialist companies can provide you with ready-made libraries of books if you do not have the time or inclination to source your own. This can be especially useful if you want to build up a collection of books about a specialist subject.

There are many dierent ways to sort and display your volumes. If you have a lot of non-ction books you could use a formal classication system such as the Dewey decimal. Alternatively you may choose to group less rigidly according to approximate subject area. Alphabetical systems are popular, as is sorting by genre of ction, such as historical, romantic or science ction. From an aesthetic point of view, grouping by size and colour can look very striking.

Finishing touches

You can furnish your home library in a traditional style, complete with walnut or cherry wood shelving. Add a comfortable leather sofa or pair of armchairs along with a small table for drinks and a reading light. If you have the option, a real log re is also a fabulous touch. Soft lighting will add to the atmosphere but make sure there is sucient illumination by the shelving to allow you to read the titles. For a more modern look, choose shelves in beech, metal or even glass to keep the room as bright and airy as possible.

Achieving an Upcycled Home Decor (2013-11-25 10:10) - HFR

We all know that we should cut down on the amount of waste we produce and embrace the benets of recycling. This response to an increasingly consumerist society has resulted in one of the hottest trends in interiors ? Upcycling. Using salvaged materials such as wood or glass in your decorating can help you create a high-impact, stunning look for your home.

Salvaged treasures for an upcycled home decor Pieces created from reclaimed or salvaged materials not only look fabulous but are a great example of how you can make ethical choices and still have fantastic furniture. Using old pieces of aluminium has a far lower impact on the environment than manufacturing new ones.

Supporting companies that use salvaged wood prevents further deforestation of the rainforests, which in turn should halt the destruction of so many natural habitats. A large wooden table made from reclaimed timbers makes a striking centrepiece for any dining room, while unusual sideboards or cupboards made from vintage pieces of metal will be a real talking point and create a delectable upcycled home decor.

Declutter your home with smart storage solutions (2013-12-10 14:47) - HFR
Getting rid of all the clutter is a simple way to make your house feel more spacious, as well as keeping it tidy and making it easier to clean. Wardrobes, dressers and chests of drawers are all great options but if you look closely youll see that there are plenty of other opportunities for extra storage in the home. Think vertically If you dont have much in the way of spare oor space then vertical storage could be the perfect solution to declutter your home. Hanging tall, narrow shelving units on your walls will stop the room feeling overcrowded and are particularly useful for storing items such as cosmetics and spare towels in bathroom. The smallest corner of a room can accommodate a round-fronted bookcase for displaying ornaments, books or photos. You could use a pre-brought storage solution, combine several bookcases or even put up your own shelves for a real rustic touch.

Look along the top of your kitchen cupboards and you will probably see a lot of empty space. This is the ideal place to store extra-large pans or those gadgets that dont get used that often. If you are tting a new kitchen there are lots of unexpected spaces you can take advantage of. Install a carousel or rotunda under the corner of your work surfaces, suspend pans or kitchen utensils from specially-designed brackets or add a narrow wine-rack along one edge of your cupboards. Tall double ovens take up less oor space than side-by-side models and usually have storage space above and below for baking trays and casserole pots.

Secret solutions to declutter your home If you want a more minimalist look then there are some very clever storage solutions that will declutter your home and keep all your clutter hidden from view. Furnish your bathroom with a sink tted into a wooden vanity unit. Not only does this keep ugly pipework out of sight and prevent the gathering of dust but gives you a convenient place to store cleaning products and extra toilet rolls.

If you dont have the room for tted wardrobes in the bedroom, there are still plenty of options. Choose a bed with large drawers underneath to store spare bed linen or heavy winter clothing. A divan bed is a great option as it opens up to create a large space below the mattress, giving plenty of room to accommodate bulky additional duvets and pillows.

Top tips for the ideal Living Room Layout (2013-12-17 16:14) - HFR
As the name suggests, the living room is one of the spaces in your home that gets the most use. It serves a variety of functions, from relaxing and entertaining to listening to music and watching television. Getting the layout right is crucial to make the most of your space.

Choose your focal point Before you position your furniture, think about what will be the main focal point of the room. In many cases this is the television, but it could also be a replace or a set of patio doors out to the garden. The rest of your furniture can then be positioned around this feature. Make sure that any seating is the right distance from your focal point. For example, sofas should be positioned so that the television can be seen comfortably, not too close or too far away.

Drop-dead gorgeous Dining Table Decoration (2014-01-08 11:40) - HFR

When entertaining guests there is more to think about than just the food. Using the right accessories to dress your dining table can really add to the atmosphere. It is easy to create an array of dierent looks to suit any occasion.

To cloth or not to cloth? For a formal dinner, a tablecloth makes the perfect base for your dining table decoration. Coloured cloths are more forgiving of stains but white always looks elegant and complements any crockery or additional decorations perfectly. For a less formal look, choose striking placemats and lay them directly on the table for a contemporary look. This works especially well with reclaimed timber tables where the wood is the main attraction. Alternatively, compromise with a table runner to add colour and texture. Silk runners in rich jewel shades bring a touch of exotic charm to your table.

together for a more casual, rustic eect. Displaying candles in glass vases or bowls with lots of owers or foliage can look very striking, while tea lights in coloured glass holders are simple yet beautiful. For a seaside, New England feel, use small pieces of driftwood and plenty of shells scattered along the table. Glass bowls lled with water, candles and glitter look very pretty, or instead curl fairy lights into a vase for an enchanting centrepiece. A bowl lled with just one fruit, such as lemons or limes, looks fresh, bold and modern.
