SHORT PAPER ASSIGNMENT #1: ROSS KINGS BRUNELLESCHIS DOME Due: Tuesday January 28 by 11:59 PM Upload to Dropbox in Blackboard

Format Your paper should be double-spaced, with 1 margins and 12 point font. Your paper must be a minimum of two pages in text - this does not include the heading or any possible footnotes or illustrations. Your paper must have a short introduction, a body, and a short conclusion. Remember that each paragraph needs to have its own thesis. Submission You can bring a hard copy of your paper to class on January 28 or you can upload a PDF or Word document of your paper to the Dropbox on Blackboard. Late papers must be submitted via Dropbox. If you turn in your paper late, 10% (or 10 points) will be subtracted for each day it is late. Grading Your paper will be graded on content, style, grammar and punctuation, how well you answer the questions below, and the extent to which you met the requirements of the assignment. This is a formal academic paper so you should not use the rst person and you must avoid colloquial and subjective language (i.e. awesome, marvelous, cool, etc.). Instructions First, read Ross Kings Brunelesschis Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture. Then, answer #1 below: 1. In 1418, Florence sponsored a competition for the design of the dome of the Cathedral. Why had the dome not been built yet? What kinds of problems did the construction of the dome pose and how did Brunelleschis plan solve these? What were some of Brunelleschis inuences? Next, answer AT LEAST ONE of the remaining questions below: 2. Discuss one or two of the obstacles/setbacks Brunelleschi encountered during the construction of the dome and how he was able to overcome them. 3. During the course of construction, Brunelleschi invented new contraptions and machines to help with the building of the dome. Discuss one or two of these inventions. 4. Describe the daily routine of the workers who built the dome. 5. Brunelleschi had a lifelong rivalry with Lorenzo Ghiberti. Discuss this rivalry, especially in terms of Ghibertis role in the dome project. 6. What were the materials needed for the construction of the dome? Where did they come from and how did they get to Florence?
