FS2/ KS1 Phonics Presentation

Objective
To give you a better understanding of the Ruth Miskin Programme (RWI) and how it is implemented at JPS. (FS2 Y2) To provide you with practical ways to help your child in the early stages of reading and comprehnesion.

How is the programme taught? FS2 Term 1


RWI phonics is taught as the Literacy focus each day. 3 sounds every week sounds are then blended together (Word Time)
These are communicated in the home-learning for the week Small group guided reading

How is the programme taught? FS2 Term 2 and 3


Phonics is taught from 7.40-8am, discrete from literacy. Groups are set ensuring childrens learning needs are met (closing the gap) Groups are assessed regularly Small group guided reading to assess comprehension as well as phonic knowledge

How is the programme taught? KS1 Year 1 and Year 2

Year 1 streamed three times a week, 2 RM sessions in class with the class teacher. Year 2 streamed every day for reading. Focusing on S+L, decoding, comprehension, fluency and expression, writing, blending and segmenting skills. A RWI book will be sent home each week. An ORT book will also be sent home. Same level/colour as RWI. These books can be changed regularly. Small group guided reading to build comprehension skills

Terminology
The children become use to the language of phonics: Phoneme smallest unit of sound Grapheme written representation of the sound Diagraph two letters making one sound (ai) Trigraph three letters making one sound (igh, ear, ure) Split diagraph two letters making one sound - split by a constant (i-e in bike)

When reading
Read with your child(ren) everyday. 10 minutes can make all the difference! Encourage Fred Talk Point out words when out and about. Can you sound that word out? Try not to tell them the word. Always encourage Fred Talk where appropriate. Some words cannot be sounded out you cant Fred a red! Stick tricky words on the fridge said, my, the (green words and red words)

What do we use to teach phonics?


Use sound cards Lolly-sticks Phonic word games RWI or decodable books Oxford Reading Tree (very decodable) Silly sentences I can mix in a red cup Kinesthetic phonics Interactive games Red and green word cards Small focused groups to stretch higher attainers and close the gaps for lower attainers. Regular assessments

Games to be played at home


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Find me game how many objects can you find starting with the s sound? Mood sounds using different voices to say the sound (angry voice, sad voice, happy voice) Croaker introduce a puppet (or cuddly toy) and explain that its croaking the sound! Teach the toy/puppet how to say the sound correctly. Sound Bingo! Use objects around the house starting with sounds. Match the sound to the grapheme. Can you find? When out and about, ask your child to find you an object beginning/ending with a sound.
