Modellers
Orion Rising
With so much military equipment now moved in containers it is surprising that model
manufacturers have as yet not offered any handling equipment to go with them.
Well that all changes
because Planet Models
have just released the
Orion V, a container
loader used by the
Bundeswehr. OK, so
it is an Army item, but
there have got to be
opportunities to use it
on aircraft dioramas
because it is beautifully
cast and comes
complete with decals.
As yet this item is not
listed by UK Importer
Hannants, but if you
keep an eye on their
website we are sure it
will appear before too
long. See their advert
elsewhere in this edition for their contact details etc., while worldwide enquiries should
visit www.cmkkits.com for details of importers in your country.
Editors Choice -
New from Gunze
Gunze-Sangyo, or CSI Creos Corporation as they are more
correctly called, have added a couple of new Surfacer
compounds to their range, these being Mr Finishing Surfacer
1500 black or grey. Both of these are currently available in a
40ml, screw-top jar, but MDC hope to have them shortly in the
100ml aerosol as well. Basically we all use Mr Surfacer, which
is great to ll gaps and prepare the model surface for paint, but
it has limitations and the most obvious is that it is slightly grainy
and also quite soft, even when dry. This new version is designed
to give a totally smooth and very hard coating prior to the
application of colour. The grey is obviously ideal for all colours
whilst the black is just right for metallics. Drying time is a little
slower than the ordinary Mr Surfacers and this is deliberate to
allow the surface to level and thus give a perfect smooth nish.
Both products are available in the UK for 9.00 plus shipping
from Model Design Construction, Tel: 01246 827755, Email:
models@modeldesignconstruction.co.uk or visit
www.modeldesignconstruction.co.uk.
Microbrushes in a can
Many of you will use Microbrushes, we do in large numbers as
they are so good for so many tasks on the model bench and
in the past they have only been available in small boxes, well
now Little-cars has them in these handy little plastic dispensing
containers. Each holds 100 Microbrushes and they are available
in the following sizes; superne (white), ne (yellow) and regular
(green). The container becomes a dispenser by opening the tab in
the base, which should hopefully stop you spilling the whole lot on
the deck on a regular basis!
Available for 12.00 a tube, contact Little-Cars.com, Tel: 01234
711980 or Email: sales@little-cars.com for more details.

Clever Trumpeter
Trumpeter continue their excellent Master-Tools
range with the release of a number of new items
recently. Those we have here are as follows:
#09925 Model Chisel
#09938 Plastic Circle Board B-set
#09941 0.2mm Filmic Gauge-Silver
Now these titles all sound odd and probably dont
tell you a lot, so lets elaborate. The Model Chisel
is just that, a metal cutting edge designed to allow
modellers to wor in conned spaces removing
excess material or revising the shape of an area. The
version we have is atheaded and mm wide, but
there are ve more shapessizes available, all at the
same retail price of 4.99 each. The Plastic Circle
Board B-set is a set of 0.5mm thick plastic rings and
dots in diameters from 80mm down to 30mm for the
former and 1mm to 20mm for the latter, Probably
you are thinking what can I use them for?, well they
can be templates for scribing or masks for painting
plus of course you can use them as they are in
scratchbuilding, as they are far more consistent than
you can probably punch and at 4.99 a pack a lot
cheaper. The nal item, the ilmic augeilver, is
a set of gauges printed in silver on .mm clear lm
and it offers a ruler, protractor and square all of which
are very eible, so are ideal for wrapping around
things like fuselages and wings. A very useful set and
only 3.99, so well worth the investment.
They all should be available from all Trumpeter
stocists, but in case of difculty contact the
Importer, Pocketbond Ltd for details of your local
supplier.
At last
Having covered the release of their superb new A4 (V2) rockets in
Issue 96, Special Armour have at last released the Meillerwager V2
transporter to go with them. This injected kit (#SA72012) is stunning
with no fewer than 111 parts moulded in a dark tan colour. Detail
is excellent, about all you may want to add are brake lines, and
once combined with the A4 (V2) rocket and SS-100 Gigant tractor
that they also do (#72001), this should make for a very impressive
model. We have to ask, though, why so long for such an (in)famous
rocket in kit form because we have had kits of the Bloodhound and
SAM-2 for decades!
t retails for . and is available in the via importer for
the range Hannants, so see their advert elsewhere in this edition for their contact
details etc. Worldwide enquiries should visit www.cmkkits.com for details of importers in your country.

his is my third time of opening
up one of the sturdy AFV Club
boxes and getting to grips with
one of their Tigers. In this
particular case its the two-
seat trainer F-5F. As before, the box
is very nicely done with excellent
artwork, which protects the light
grey-coloured sprues within. You
get seven sprues of grey, a
separate upper rear fuselage
and a single transparent
sprue. All of the plastic
is neatly moulded

10 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - January 2014
without too much flash and excellent
detail is immediately evident in the cockpit
and wheel well interiors. The exterior is
covered in rivets, mind you, so some people
arent going to like that too much, but the
engraved panel lines are clean and not
too deep. Transparent bits are OK with
good clarity, even though they are a bit on
the thick side. You also get a tiny etched
fret with just five parts on it (no seat belts)
a single decal sheet and a well-drawn
instruction booklet of 16 pages. The last
four pages are dedicated to the paint and
markings of the four really good versions on
offer. The drawings for the paint guide are
four-view black and white, really clear and
with very welcome accurate camouflage
demarcations. I also cheated a bit on this
one as I had the Eduard detail set # 49577
with interior and exterior photo-etched parts
to liven it up a little.
Construction is of a very modular style,
as with all the AFV Club F-5s. They have
maximised their use of the moulds by
chopping it all up into little bits, so you can mix
and match the sprues into a huge number of
variants. This could have been a nightmare of
illtting subassemblies but the moulds are
really well done, with very accurate location.
This means that the actual build time is
radically shortened because youre not ghting
with any of the joints. Proof of this was in the
fact that within a day I had the complete rear
of the aircraft, wings, tail, n, the whole lot,
built and ready to accept the elongated nose,
in less than 2 hours! The nose, however, was
a completely different ettle of sh. ecause
I had decided to complicate matters with
the Eduard details, the cockpit interior took
considerably longer to get ready. The AFV
Club cockpit moulding is actually really good
with lots of very ne detail but the paint on
the duard parts is astonishing and innitely
more accurate than anything I could hope to
achieve. Eventually it all goes just about where
it should do and its time to attach the nose
to the fuselage. This is pretty painless with
no gaps to speak of although there is a little
step on the lower fuselage to blend in. One
seriously positive aspect of the build is the way
in which it all lines up properly if youre careful.
Allow the moulded parts to sit where they want
to and its amazingly straightforward. So, with
that in mind, mask off the transparent bits, tack
them into place and its already time for paint.
The options in the box are nothing short of
inspired: one USAF aircraft in wrap-around
grey threetone camouage, one ranian in
desert camouage, one ordanian in allover
silver and one from Singapore in wrap-around
three-tone blue/greys. Each of them would
look just great and it's a hard choice to make. I
opted for the Iranian machine so I could fade it
and mae it loo suitably lthy. The decals loo
good, with neat printing and good colours but
I think I had something wrong with my sheet
because the moment they touched the water
they began to break up and became almost
totally unusable. This is the rst time ve had
this kind of trouble from AFV Club and Im not
sure if the decal sheet was left in the window
of the modelling room, which might account
for their incredible brittleness. That aside,
I managed to cobble enough of them back
together to get some markings on the model
but there was no way was going to ght with
any of the stencils so there is just the minimum
of them on show.
After that little disaster it was on to another
one as once the nal nish of Testors ull
Coat matt varnish had been applied I started
on the nishing process for the cocpit. This
meant attaching all the Eduard etched sills and
canopy rails and to be honest I should have
done this before painting and masked it off
as opposed to being lazy and just putting the
canopies in place. The sills are really difcult
to get into place properly and even now Im
not 100% happy with them but for fear of
ruining the paint Im leaving them alone. The
added detail is great though, and with those
big canopies in such an odd open position it
needs that added realism. The kit gives you
a couple of very useful additions as well. You
not only get Sidewinders and two sizes of drop
tanks, you also get two crew ladders for the
cockpit and unmentioned in the instructions, is
a data-link pod for the wing tip. This last bit is a
really good addition to the American version as
they often carry them on exercise.
FINAL VERDICT
The AFV Club range of F-5s is hard to beat. They go together superbly, they have excellent detail and they look
amazing when done. dd to that the nishing touches of ladders, pods and missiles and barring the oddity of the
decal sheet in mine, youre looking at a nearly perfect kit. Nearly that is until you look at the price as they are a
little bit expensive, but then I guess quality doesnt come cheap, does it?
The options in the box are
nothing short of inspired:

and one from Singapore in

he most noticeable facet
achieved with the P.24 kit was
the excellent rendition of the
corrugated metal skin, one of
the main design features of this
gull-wing fighter, so it is not surprising
to find the same parts utilised here from
that previous kit. This P.11 comprises two
sprues moulded in grey-coloured plastic
offering 45 parts (some wont be used as
they are intended for the P.11c version)
and these are complemented with 13
resin pieces and a small etched fret with
about 30 parts. The newly moulded parts
are thus the fuselage, engine unit and the
struts, while the resin parts offer smaller
details such as the wing gun bulges and
machine gun barrels and all can be further

Following the successful PZL P.24 kit released under the Azur/Frrom label (See
Issue 77) it was obvious that a state-of-the-art version of its predecessor, the
PZL P.11, was probably on the cards. Sure enough, this year sees the brand
new PZL P.11 kit in 1:72 split between both labels with Azur covering the P.11c
version for Polish and foreign users, while Frrom offers the Rumanian licence-
built P.11f as reviewed here.

enhanced with etched parts that are no
longer nickel-plated, so they are easier to
work with. The larger plastic parts are very
cleanly moulded without any visible flaws
and this is fundamental for the corrugated
skin, which would be impossible to repair.
The manufacturer this time has portrayed
the cooling apertures on the fuselage much
better, being deep enough and not just a
scribed outline as was the case with the
P.24 kit. The smaller parts feature, typically
for short-run production, some flash and
mould dividing seams that must removed.
The windscreen is perfectly moulded,
extremely thin and crystal clear. The kit
offers five markings for Rumanian machines
during WWII including a rare option with ski
undercarriage, the skis themselves being
included amongst the resin parts. The decal
sheet is printed by Aviprint and shows
good register, density and typically for this
producer the decals are very thin with a
gloss carrier film.
The kit has a well reproduced but rather
spartan cockpit interior and right at the start
of the build found ill tting parts when a trial
tting of the oor and rear bulhead highlighted
a substantial overlap and both parts had to
be reduced by about 2mm. I continued with
installation of the seat, control column, a few
etched bits and the whole cockpit was then
sprayed Aluminium. The instrument panel is
again from the . it but it loos rather at
with vaguely dened dials and does not loo
at all like the real thing with its raised and well
visible individual instruments. After painting
it black I brushed the red and white dials and
accentuated the whole thing with a gentle
dry brushing of light grey oil paint. Once the
fuselage halves were closed I glued the resin
oil cooler onto the starboard side. This part
seemed be slightly larger and thicker than
the real thing, even taking into account that
the umanian machines used a larger ns
version, plus the reinforcing etched strips
(#PP15) were not long enough, so they had to
be extended with strips for the smaller version
(#PP16) that is not used in this version.
I continued construction with the wing
assembly that is formed by an upper half and
centre part onto which the separate outer
bottom halves are attached. These parts tted
very well, perfectly hiding the joint lines in the
corrugated skin, so I clamped them together
and ed them with small amount of etra thin
Mr Cement S. However it should be noted
that before I did this I had to thin down the
thickness of the trailing edges, which looked
a bit thick. The instructions show incorrect
placement of the wing guns, bulges and spent
ammo chutes as they were mounted on the
inner position by the wings struts (the correct
position is shown in the camouage diagram,

FINAL VERDICT
t has been a long wait for a modern it of this uniue olish ghter that become an icon of the olish ir orce in its defence of their homeland
during the early days of . This it is very well detailed with ecellent rendition of the corrugated metal sin and it can be built into a nice replica with
few complications. This umanian version also offers uniue and rarely seen marings that may attract modellers looing for alternative subects with
an interesting historical bacground.
though), so the outer holes needed to be lled
in. The tiny etched aileron trim tabs were glued
into the wing ust before painting commenced
in order not to break them off; the same
applying to the rudder trim tabs, rod linage
and other miniature parts. To retain the correct
geometry it is mandatory to glue the wing to
the fuselage along with the struts at the same
time, so rst ed the wing in position using
regular evell ontacta cement and then
installed the struts; the slow curing cement
thus allowing any necessary adustments.
Next I added the landing gear struts, and
eeping the correct wheel trac (.mm) was
achieved with a simple aid drawn on a piece
of paper were parallel lines at that separation,
then simply put the it on them and gently
press from above to adust the trac, before
nally ing the struts in position with a few
drops of cyanoacrylate. et added the
tailplanes, but their struts were added at a later
stage in order to simplify painting.
With the airframe assembled I moved my
attention to the engine unit. The instructions
rather illogically suggest you glue the ehaust
collector to the engine and after that add
the cowling halves proceeded in a more
conventional manner, though, gluing the
cowling together rst and opening up the gun
apertures with a ne drill bit at the same time.
The engine itself looed very busy with ne
ns and subtle crancase details; however,
added individual ignition cables using thin
copper wires. The engine was then sprayed
aluminium with valve covers brushed gloss
blac and the crancase piced out in light
grey. The ehaust collector was about mm
short on one side so the missing part was
added from bent brass rod of a corresponding
diameter.
ow could proceed with painting, so rst
sprayed the model with a base coat of r
urfacer then added rivet lines, which can be
seen uite distinctively in closeup shots of the
real plane, especially on the fuselage. n the

, while on the upper surfaces went for
ar reen that was further darened with
a drop of blac because period photographs
show a distinctively dar colour with an almost
blac tint to it. The paint scratches seen
around the cocpit and port fuselage side
were reproduced with a silver rismacolor
pencil and then sealed the surface with
gloss varnish. y maring choice was hite
the machine own by oan imache who,
during the early arbarossa campaign in
summer whilst ying this aircraft, shot
down two ghters. noticed this aircraft
did not wear the rudder tricolour as can be
seen in photographs in the ecellent
boo omanian ighter olours ,
so these decals were left off. therwise the
decals wored well on the corrugated sin
but must offer a word of warning because
the decals are etremely thin and need to be
carefully handled. fter an application of r
ar ofter they perfectly conformed to all
the surface details and the rather large areas
of carrier lm disappeared, which could have
been a problem especially with the crosses on
the wing.
ow it was time for the nal assembly
starting with the engine unit rst. t was
inserted into the cowling then the ehaust ring
went on and the complete unit was cemented
to the fuselage. The fuselage machine guns
looed nice having nicely cast perforations,
however felt they were too thic so
eventually replaced them with similar looing
items from my spares bo. n aperture needs
to be drilled out in the gun slots opposite
side as the it omits these openings where
the shell enters the fuselage, went through
it via a tube, then out through the muzzles
in the cowling. managed to brea off and
loose one of the wing guns, so these were
replaced with aluminium tube from the lbion
lloy lide ac ..mm diameter. The
windshield was secured using ator lue and
all the remaining petite etched bits such as the
ring and bead sight, grab handles and others
were added at this point. The undercarriage
reinforcing wires were cut from lbion lloys
nicelsilver .mm diameter rod then painted
a natural steel colour, and nally glued on the
aerial wires made from blac shing wire.

he box artwork is OK, but this
undersells the contents of the decent
sized box, brim full with individually
bagged sprues, foam protecting
delicate parts and separate boxings
for the fuselage etc., superb. Also supplied is
a full complement of weapons and full length
engines that have (on the most part) redundant
exterior detail. The wings have separate slats
and aps, and there are three decal sheets.
Photo-etched parts are employed for the radar,
which isnt a major selling point of the kit, unlike
the seat harnesses, canopy rails and mirrors,
which are. These add that extra level of detail
often missing in such a release. The sixteen-
page book style instructions are well illustrated
and give an encouraging reassurance to the
build process (being quite involved - spread
over 23 steps) to complete the model with
its high parts count. First impressions?
Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls Of Fire,
its time to press play on that soundtrack! But
there are some blemishes to attend to. There
is a slight seam line down the centre of the
clear canopy (as well as the raised moulded
detonation chord) and the tyres are vinyl! One
more point to highlight is the abundance of rivet
detail on the wings - which is going to be down
to personal preference how you deal with them,
or not.
The Build
The busy cocpit is rst up, and the raised
detail is a pleasure to paint, as are the seats
with their PE belts. The forward fuselage is
separate from the main body of the kit so I also
started on the wings and undercarriage bays
at this stage. Very early in the process you do
start to question the clarity of the instructions.
HobbyBoss have crammed a lot of information
into each [well] illustrated step, but take care
to understand and follow the detail. I missed
some small parts and only realised further on
into the build. It wasnt terminal, it just led me
on and made me think: is this the highway
to the danger zone? Once the cockpit is all
dressed it can be sandwiched with the forward
undercarriage bay to give you the forward
fuselage. I didnt install the PE radar, and did
add six 1p coins to weight the nose which
there is no mention of in the instructions. The
cannon bay panels t lie a glove and the front
oleo leg (you have a nice choice of extended or
compressed) can be tted later so left this off
to save breakage while handling the growing
cat'. Vinyl tyres? Why? (We can write a whole

Cat nished its service with the US Navy in 2006 after nancial cutbacks and
government politics halted the future development of the Tomcat, and it was

modern complement of ALR-67, ALQ-165, TARPS pods and smart bombs.

Thankfully there was a little gift from our Editor
in the box in the form of the lovely resin set of
wheels from Tally Ho! These were painted and
glued to their respective oleo legs ready for
their inclusion later.
Next come the mighty wings. They are
nely moulded ( wasnt going to worry about
the overdose of rivet detail) and without any
mechanism to simultaneously synchronise the
sweep chose to tae these broen wings with
separate slats and aps, and pose them spread
to show off the grime where the wing glove

the closed position. Not shown is the option to
glue them in the correct position, set at 45 for
the aps down pose. lso to note is the small
slot on the exterior intakes next to the port and
starboard lights. These can be lled.
Full engines are supplied, with exterior detail,
which is redundant on the nished it. The
multi-part internal detail is good, however, and
adds to the overall rendering of this aircraft. The
main undercarriage bays are also built up and
added to the main fuselage at this stage. They
are quite impressive, in engineering and detail,
adding to the experience of building this from
the box. The rest of the detail and the parts
continue in this vein. Detail inside the airbrakes,
canopy and of course the plethora of external
stores is commendable, especially considering
the high parts count, numbered in order on the
sprues, maing it easy to nd everything.
Colour
The F-14 has a very distinctive patina to the
panelling, especially on the later D-model.
Because these are the end-of-the-line aircraft
replaced by F/A-18s, they are beautifully dirty
with an abundance of visual reference online
giving us plenty of options to recreate the
effects in scale of this classic. had my sights
set on this objective - to achieve the correct
weathering. The supplied decals are thin
enough, but have a slight misregister, and
ust wasnt taen with the two schemes offered
so ordered the ightertown decals instead.
The kit painting diagrams, though basic, are
in colour and do include references for the
following paint brands: Mr Hobby, Vallejo,
Model Master, Tamiya and Humbrol, which is
very helpful. Following the colour references
on the ightertown decal painting guide, used
Tamiya y rey for the underside,
along with ight rey and edium
ea rey for the upper surface. n retrospect
could have lightened all of these slightly. The
exhaust nozzles and the neighbouring areas do
lack detail, but with some canny masking and
painting can be brought to life. The obligatory
gloss coat followed the paint, to prepare for the
decalling session, followed by another gloss
coat to seal everything ready for the main
mission the weathering.
Weathering
tep Tamiya panel line wash basically
smearing the entire surface and letting it dry
overnight. Using cotton buds dampened with
white spirit, then lifted off most of the wash,
leaving the panel lines and dirt streaks where
appropriate.
tep then added more streas and
dirt, fuel, oil and muck, using oil paints and a
at brush with a hint of white spirit, carefully
drawing the stains in the direction of airow.
On this swing-wing it keeps things interesting
with varying angles for this effect. also made
a mask template of the wing glove to depict the
oil streaking where the wings sweep into their
covers.

how to apply the next stage the patina.
tep ve grown fond of the little Tamiya

happy with the coverage, used a small wad of
kitchen paper held in a pair of locking tweezers,
slightly moistened with white spirit to erase
the shadow along the panel lines. was uite

evenings completing the loo, felt satised.
All that remained was to attach the numerous
separate parts aps, slats, tailplanes, weapons,
antennae, canopy and airbraes. ut ran out

Fast forward through the hot summer nights
and the soundtrack plays again. Out with the
cyanoacrylate glue, two evenings completing
the build, and is it a Hollywood ending?
FINAL VERDICT
This it is easy to build, the t of the parts and engineering is very, very good, there is a little ash in some places but nothing to get in the way,
and the detail is seriously impressive. The weapons give you more than enough options to build nearly any specic machine you want. The
experience and result are equally superb and evocative. This fan would line up for another ticket without hesitation.

ortunately the Caproni Ca.310 is
at last available as a conventional
plastic kit in 1:72 scale thanks to
MPM, who have issued it in their
Azur range in four different boxings
dedicated to the operation of the type by
various nations. The one I have here is the
Italian and Spanish service version and it
consists of three grey-coloured plastic sprues
with about 50 parts plus 11 clear and 25
resin parts plus a reasonably sized etched
fret. The larger plastic parts are exceptionally
cleanly moulded with polished surfaces,
ne engraved panel lines, restrained fabric
rendition on the fuselage and subtly raised
control surface structure, although their
separation could be more distinct. On some
of the smaller parts tooling separation lines
can be seen, so some clean-up can be
epected along with renement of various
small moulding imperfections that can
be seen here and there. The ejector pin
marks are positioned so that they should
not cause any bother, except the one that
crosses the internal structural framework
on the cockpit starboard side. The wing
trailing edge thickness is acceptable, while
the tailplane halves are too thick and need
to be reduced. The cockpit interior offers all
the basic equipment and instruments, with
the boom for the control yokes looking busy
(the wheels even include tiny brake levers)
as well as the instrument panel with delicate
raised dials. However, I suspect that the
later Ca.310 version with large side windows
would benet from etra detailing in the mid
fuselage area as this is completely devoid of
detail. The large clear sprue is common for
all versions and it is again perfectly moulded
without any visible defects; I like the way
the separate nose section and the main
canopy are designed maing their ture to
the fuselage easier without worrying about
marking them with glue or damaging them

being of historical consequence.

during sanding. On the other hand Im curious
how the manufacturer intends us to the
machine gun in the turret because there is
no opening for it, nor any kind of mount?
Apart from this the turret is quite detailed
with internal structure, hand wheel and seat
belt. A little trimming will be needed for the
side door window because they seem to
have a slightly different shape than the door
opening (it is a pity the manufacturer didnt
mould the doors completely open and from
clear plastic as that would have solved this
issue). Eduard has already released a set of
canopy masks intended for the Norwegian
and Peruvian variants, so these can be used
with this version as well. The wheel wells are
reproduced with a plain roof, but this is quite
OK considering their width, while the resin
wheels with two hub styles are euisite and
the main undercarriage legs will loo ne once
all the tiny etched details are added. Nicely
cast are the engines, which include individual
ehaust stacs and the perforated covers that
are needed for some variants. The kit offers
two machines in Spanish Nationalists marking
and a training and liaison version of the Regia
Aeronautica. The decal sheet is printed by
viprint and loos ne, only the dedication
inscription on the fuselage seems to be a little
blurry in places and the letters should be a
little narrower. The typical A5-size instruction
booklet is traditionally carefully prepared with
the paint references given for the Gunze
Sangyo range; however, I think the most
colourful schemes will not be easy to read, so
suggest checing the ofcial website
where a full colour version of the kit schemes
can be downloaded.
I kicked the build off with the cockpit
assembly and installing the oor in the
starboard fuselage half. The crew seat needed
some thinning with a sanding stick and then
the seat belts with anchoring chains were
glued in place; the assembly instructions
may not be very clear about these items so I
suggest checking photographs of any Italian
WWII aircraft to get an idea how their seat
belts system looked. After assembly of the
control wheels and the instrument panel I
sprayed the cockpit in the light grey/green
interior colour and continued with the window
that was trimmed a little before being glued
into the port door. Now I glued together the
fuselage halves ecept the nose section that
was left until the clear nose section has been
attached at a later stage.
I now continued with the wing halves, which
were thinned at the trailing edges with coarse
sanding sticks and all panels lines were
rescribed. I also, using the UMM scribing tool,
made the separation of the ailerons deeper
and broader. Gluing the wing to the fuselage
reuired several trial runs until the t was
acceptable. While the bottom part matched
well with just two small gaps to sort out, the
upper joint along the wing root was more
trouble and the resulting thicker gaps needed
to be lled and rescribed to
match the surrounding panel
line width. little ller was also
needed to blend in the horizontal
stabilizers to the fuselage. For
the engines I used my own
assembly sequence because
the suggested sequence in the
instructions did not offer much
space for the corrections
that I subsequently found
necessary. t rst installed
into the wing the resin
nacelle plugs whose correct
position is determined by a groove.
et assembled the cowlings, but their
internal diameter was smaller than the resin
engines' size, so the cowlings were thinned
using a Dremel motor tool. The engines are
beautifully cast, so they were just sprayed
an Aluminium shade with the reduction gear
casing brushed in a blue/grey colour and all
the ne details accentuated with a dar oil
wash. The engines were then trial tted being
snapped onto the heagonshaped pins rst
and then the cowlings were applied; however,
the engines couldnt reach the front of the
nacelles, therefore the engine locating pins
had to be shortened by about 3mm. Once
the ehausts were glued to the rear of each
engine the cowlings were ed to the wing
and a few remaining gaps were sorted out
with thicker cyanoacrylate and thin plastic
strips. The outstanding smaller parts such as
the carburettor inlets and the propellers were
installed at the end of the build.
Now I could attach the transparencies,
starting with the nose that was mated to the
fuselage front, which could then be nally
joined together. Both the nose and main
canopy needed a little adjusting and sanding,
but overall I was pleased with how these
large clear parts tted. et mased off the
canopies using the Eduard masks, which
saved me a lot of time (although the masks
do not include the other type of the turret, but
they are still very helpful) and went on to the
painting. First I sprayed on the white wing
tips and also for the vertical stabilizer that is
provided in the kit as a decal, but I thought the
large white decal area would be troublesome,
so I decided to paint it instead with the black
crosses cut from the decal for application
later. I continued with the under surfaces in
Grigio Mimetico (light grey) followed by Verde
Mimetico (dark green) and Giallo Mimetico
(sandy yellow) on the upper surfaces. I
used my own Gunze-Sangyo Aqueous
approimations that deviated from the
suggested shades in the instructions (although
these seemed and are denitely usable);
my choice was H303 Green and H79 Sandy
Yellow on the upper surfaces with H317 grey
underneath. While still having the canopy paint
masks on, I added the silver bordering of the
cockpit side windows that are visible in period
photographs. The decals worked very well and
adhered
to the surface
without any need for decal
solutions, but they are a bit
thin so care has to be taken when
handling them.
The nal completion and preparation
of the smaller parts took quite some time and
needed a lot of checking against references.
First I turned my attention to the landing gear
and added the missing oleo rubber sleeves,
which were made from thin lead rod wound
around the legs and painted gloss black. On
photographs I could not see any scissor links
so these were left off, although I suspect some
aircraft may have had them installed. Bending
the etched wheel mudguards to the required
shape seemed a little too comple and
admit I was not able to bend the part in both
planes, so I eventually ended up with rather
at looing item; thin a resin mudguard
would be a more elegant solution here. The
resin wheels, however, are little gems having
etremely ne tread patterns that suspect
were done using 3D modelling. I continued
with the turret assembly and opened the
rectangular slot for the gun using a ne drill
bit and scalpel blade and net ed the gun
in it using a rod to imitate the mount. The
resin machine gun barrel did not correspond
to the real thing, as the muzzle cap was
conical, not cylindrical, however I utilized it for
the wing-mounted weapon that was missing
in my eample, while the turret gun was
sourced from spares. I inserted the turret in
the fuselage opening, and its correct position
is secured thans to its tight t and a small
chock moulded on the fuselage wall, so I didnt
use any glue. Based on photographs of the
machine '18-11' that I was building I added a
couple of missing airframe details such as the
DF loop and antenna mast behind the turret
and the wing reinforcing wires, which were cut
from thicer gauge shing line. The it does
not include the upper tie rods on the ailerons
either, so these were added from my spares
bo.
FINAL VERDICT
verall, this is ne it of a long neglected subect that may appeal to many modellers thans to its uniue and rarely seen marings. The multi
media nature of the it usually means it is not intended for the ineperienced and the build indeed conrmed this, so would recommend it to
more skilled modellers who are able to cope with both the kits physical nature and its omissions.

20 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - January 2014
One can say that the A-4 Skyhawk is one of the most important types in aviation history as it has been involved in several wars beginning
with Vietnam and ending with the Falklands and the Gulf Wars.
T
he model depicted for this article belonged to the
Armada Argentina (Argentine Naval Aviation) during
the Falklands conflict in 1982, it was registered
3-A-307 and flown by Captain Alberto Philippi during
the attack on HMS Ardent on the 21st May 1982. He
was subsequently shot down by the Royal Navy Sea Harriers,
but ejected and managed to walk back to the Argentinian lines.
Of the three components of his squadron that took part in the
attack, all were shot down by Sea Harriers, however HMS
Ardent sank a couple of hours later.
Construction
The asegawa it is great, but to mae the specic as used
by Argentina, you must make several changes to the airframe. First

of all I considered the cockpit interior, which
in this case is very narrow with little being
seen, so I decided a resin cockpit would
be a waste of money plus it had the added
bonus of saving me time. As an essential
complement to my models I often install a
pilot gure and in this case used one of the
pilot gures offered by roduction. The
painting of the cockpit and the pilot is very
simple because it is identical to the U.S.
Navy version, although the pilot's helmet
is customized with an eagle on the visor
and a erman cross on the bac. The only
other interior part to worry about was the
engine intae and that tted without any
problem. ith all the interior nished it was
time to close the fuselage halves and add
the nose, which are offered as separate
parts for the B or C versions, so I went
with the version. The rst change you
will need to make to depict the Q model
is to mark the new panel lines around the
breglass panels, which will later be painted
a light cream colour. Then moved on to the
wings, which you must modify with a very
important detail that is applicable to all A-4s
as follows: when on the ground the slats
droop, however nearly all model kits depict
this by leaving a step in the resulting trough
in the leading edge, but this is not there in
Stage-by-Stage - Construction
All the dials and switches were picked out in white,
silver and yellow
The pilot and seat were then tted into the cockpit tub; note the
eagle motif hand-painted onto the front of the bone dome
The pilots helmet also had a German cross painted on the back
First of all, all the main components were test tted with the new pilot gure
installed (note his initial pose, which would be soon changed)
The pilot gure came from PJ Production but the pose was
modied and various details were added
The kit interior is ne for this build, so the tub was

reality (the thickness of the trailing edge
of the slat is such that it is minute when
reproduced in scale, and thus invisible).
So you must remove the step by
cementing a strip of Evergreen plastic
(square section) along the step and
then lling with putty the resulting
seam. Once dry, eliminate the join
with sandpaper so you leave no
trace of the step. Once this correction
is completed the wings and fuselage are
mated with no problem. This also goes
for the air intakes, exhaust and holes for
the cannon, although they will all require
some adustment and maybe even ller to
get a perfect t. The modications continue
with the antenna on the dorsal spine as well
as structural reinforcements on one side of
the fuselage, all of which are exclusive to the

Once the aircraft was fully painted, the
panel lines were highlighted with a pencil. I
recommend using a 2H, because I tried an

wanted. An HB was used, but only in those
areas where there would be regular access
such as access doors. Once all of that was
done I applied a coat of gloss varnish and
let it fully dry before applying the Aztec
decals, which are superb. The only difculty
experienced was with the anchors at the upper
surface of the wings due to the need to get
them over the vortex generator 'stubs' that are
characteristic of the A-4. Once all of the decals

FINAL VERDICT
For me, this is one of the most striking Skyhawk versions alongside the Israeli ones, and with
this superb quality kit from Hasegawa you can easily add this beautiful aircraft to your collection.
There are dozens of interesting schemes for the Argentinian Skyhawk which make them perfect
to model. The Aztec decals are also superb.
The tanks, bombs and MERs all need to be painted and
weathered to match the airframe
The simple exhaust nozzle is painted in a variety of metallic
shades to reproduce burnt metal
Little details matter: here you have the ap interior, painted,
decalled and weathered
All the various nal detail parts laid
out before they are added to the
model to complete the build

All the undercarriage doors also need to be
weathered, both inside and out

undercarriage units
The cockpit canopy was sprayed black rst,
to show up inside, then grey at the same
time as the main airframe, then weathered
in the same way
The tiny cannon barrels are grey at the
base with gunmetal in the middle created
from graphite applied over black, and silver
at the tips

The detail on the plastic parts is
really nice with very good external

section of the external fuselage. This
will allow for other versions of course
but the complexity of this kind of thing
means that there is plenty of scope for
misaligned parts. Overall the detail for
the interior parts is pretty good with lots
of black boxes and a very good main
instrument panel. Sadly lacking, though,
are the overhead controls for the
engines and propellers. These consist
of a whole mess of levers, switches and
knobs that are very prominent on the
real thing, so its a pity that Trumpeter
have completely ignored this area. I
made a basic set-up with some strips
of photo-etched material and stretched
sprue. Suitably painted it looks the
part but you can bet the aftermarket
companies will be on this like a shot.
The interior is made up of over 160
parts including 13 transparent bits, so it
all takes a bit of time to come together.
Painting is a matter of personal choice
as well because even though most of
the early s were nished with
an Interior Green cabin, there are
plenty of pictures showing them in grey
and natural metal although the oor
was usually a dark anti-slip kind of
surface. Sadly missing is any kind of
representation of the interior insulation
pads that covered the skins but, once
again, the aftermarket world will be
rubbing their hands with glee about that.
The fuselage quarters close up around
The kits light grey plastic is beautifully moulded with crisp, even
panel lines but barely a rivet in sight
The pounce wheel strikes again. Hey presto, rivets!
Stage-by-Stage - Construction
The interior plastic is neatly detailed and the instruments are
very good. The only thing missing is the interior acoustic/
thermal insulation
Interior colours are a bit of a mixed bag, most early HU-16s
were Interior Green but there are a lot of variations
Its a complicated build which relies on a lot of parts all being
properly aligned; plenty of room for mistakes but it does look
pretty good
The instrument panel looks gorgeous with a mix of decals
and paint; its a pity its going to be all but invisible on the
finished article
Totally missing in the kit are the engine and propeller controls
on the centre overhead console. A bit of scratch building
required until the likes of Eduard come up with the goods
The transparent main windscreen is a poor fit, which is
unusual for Trumpeter these days; nothing that a bit of filler
wont take care of
The engines are very nice but ridiculously over-complicated to
build with over 45 parts per engine. They need a wiring harness
as well
More rivet detail added to the too-plain wings. I do my riveting
before the primer goes on so that the paint layers smooth off
the little darlings

the interior reasonably well, although be
prepared for some serious ler around
the nose and the transparent section

et up are the wings and
engines. The engines are pretty good
representations of the Wright Cyclone
powerplants, although at nearly 100
parts for the two they are a bit on the
over-complicated side. They need the
ignition harness as well but once done
and painted they do look quite nice. The
large wings come in sections with the
central part holding the nacelles and
the outer sections separate. This allows
for the later, long-span, version to be
easily made with ust a new outer wing
Issue 102 - www.modelairplaneinternational.com 35
The wing centre section around the engine nacelles is very
nicely detailed and it all ts together properly too
And here is the result of the over-complicated fashion in which
its constructed; misaligned parts. The trouble is I actually
thought Id got everything in the right spot; obviously not
There is also the problem of the completely see-through centre
section which will need to be boxed in if youre going to have
the aps down. Note the lled and rescribed joint that was a
gaping hole in the previous picture

The exterior is pretty much devoid of any rivet detail, though. I guess that
Trumpeter have taken to heart the criticism of their earlier kits with the
divots in the skins and have now gone to the other extreme
Paint starts with the Light Grey undersides. The instructions
say it should be Insignia White, which may be true for the later
Taiwanese aircraft but not for the early ones. In this case its

The upper surface is FS25189 Aircraft Blue Grey with various
panels and sections of the airframe in a slightly lighter tone to
break it up a little
The walkway on the upper surface is nothing like the one
depicted in the instructions. Where Trumpeter got the shape for
that one is anyones guess
Stage-by-Stage - Paint & Markings
The walkway is black outlined and lled in with a suitable dark
grey; in this case its Ocean Grey. Check with your references as
to the exact shape of the area as there were differences in the
lengths and angles of the sections
It should end up looking something like this The pretty end of the model with lots of stripes. That means lots
of masking, of course, but its worth it in the end

moulding. The aps and ailerons are separate
which is always a good thing but if you deploy
the aps in the down position, youll have
to deal with the seethrough nature of the
fuselage. f d nown this earlier, would have
boed off the fuselage sections before they
were put together for a much more realistic
effect, than ust blaning off the offending
section as ended up doing. therwise the
wings are trouble free with ecellent detail
around the nacelles and a good overall t of
the parts. The only problem came in attaching
the wings to the fuselage. This is tricy with
lots of sections to line up and as you can see
from the pictures, not entirely successful. The
compleity of the initial construction of the
interior, combined with the odd shape of a lot
of the parts, allows for misalignment to creep
in and that means its out with the ller and
sanding stics.

and in the bo you get two good choices. The
rst is the classic in silver with yellow
and blac bands whilst the second is the much
rarer Taiwanese avy version in blue and
grey. Trumpeter have a very odd approach
to marings, though; for some reason they
really hate the stars and bars because in
so many of their its they get it wrong. ts no
different in this one, as they have once again
got the proportions wrong ome on guys, its
not that difcult ts also a real annoyance
Issue 102 - www.modelairplaneinternational.com 37
The interior is made up of over 160 parts including
13 transparent bits, so it all takes a bit of time to
come together. Painting is a matter of personal
choice as well because even though most of the early
HU-16s were nished with an Interior Green cabin,
there are plenty of pictures showing them in grey and
natural metal although the oor was usually a dark
anti-slip kind of surface
The paintwork gets some fairly heavy weathering from various
shades of pastels, Tamiya Smoke and minimal paint chips as it
would have been almost constantly retouched in service
One really lthy area is the bit under each nacelle. Those radial
engines were notoriously lthylovely
The undercarriage units are one of the most complicated and
ungainly looking affairs around but the metal legs are sturdy
and with all the strut work in place its very stable. Pity about
the nasty rubber tyres, though

when they slice the Taiwanese national
marking into quarters. I mean, why? If there
is some political reason for that then dont do
that nationality and chose someone elses,
its not as if youve got a limited options list
with this particular aircraft. Anyway, enough
moaning. I opted for the Taiwanese version,
purely because I love their markings, and
got to spraying. The painting guide calls for
Insignia White on the underside but pretty
much all the published material states Light
Grey. This is the Mr Hobby Aqueous Hobby

a few lighter panels and varying thickness of
coats to give it some life. The upper surface
is the excellent White Ensign Colourcoats
ACUS06 FS25189 Aircraft Blue-Grey, again
with varying thickness of paint and some
lighter areas and panels.
The next job requires a fair amount of
masking and thats the walkway on the
upper surface in the proper pattern and not
as Trumpeter would have you do. This area
is dark grey (any one will do really but I used
Ocean Grey) outlined in black. Theres more
blac along the leading edge of all the ying
surfaces for the de-icer boots as well as the
black lining around the fuselage hi-viz stripe.
You need a bright yellow for that (RLM 04
is good) but dont make it too bright in this
scale or it will really jump out at you and
spoil the whole look of the thing. There are
even more stripes to do on the tail for the
Taiwanese markings. These are supplied
in decal form if youd like but I opted for the
paint version, mixing a suitable light blue to
be sprayed over the white. If you do spray
your own tail stripes, make sure the white

FINAL VERDICT
This kit is something of a mixed bag. Yes it looks pretty good and there is excellent
moulding throughout but its a bit over-complicated, there is some missing detail that
should have been included and its tricky to get it all properly aligned. The worry about the
over-large tail is a bit disappointing, however I enjoyed building something this unusual
and because of its sheer presence in the display cabinet it could be made into a real
show-stopper.
Was it worth the effort?
Always a tough question when things in this hobby cost so much anyway; if you want it
youll buy it.
areas are just a little bigger than the blue or the
proportions will look kind of odd.
Weathering is a generous application of
pastel dust, some Tamiya Smoke and some
very dirty, oily looking stuff around the engine
nacelles, courtesy of Lifecolor and their
Tensocrom 207 Oil. This was all sealed in with a
couple of coats of Klear and its on to
the decals.
I have a kind of love-hate relationship with
Trumpeter decals because they are so often
wrong but they work brilliantly. In this case the
stars and bars have a too thick border around
the star and the Taiwanese sun discs have been
butchered into tiny pieces; who knows why? Not
only that but there is a second set of Taiwanese
markings on the sheet that is completely
unmentioned in the instructions! In use, the
decals are nothing short of superb. They quickly
release from the backing and slide about easily
on the gloss surface until, with a little help from
some setting solutions, they settle down with
limpet like tenacity into all the little nooks and
crannies. Then, as the complete master-stroke,
once they are totally dry you can remove the
bacing lm with a little scrubbing from white
spirit and a cotton bud (thanks to John Tigger
Wilkes for that technique). This leaves them
looking totally sprayed on, glorious. Now, if only
they could get the markings right in the
rst place
Final Details
Once this lot had dried off it was time for the rest
of the build and this is a long process because
theres a lot of it. The undercarriage is the main
culprit, which is a ddly affair, with plenty of
struts, linkages and doors to take care of. The
choice of metal units or plastic is useful and it
all ts together pretty well, maing a sturdy nal
assembly, even if it does use horrible rubber
tyres. Please Trumpeter, stop it! There are also
plenty of aerials to sort out as, for some reason,
the kit ignores the blade antennae under the
wings and gives you a whole bunch of pitot
probes instead. There are three under each
outer wing panel, two straight and one pointy.
Plasticard cut to the right shape and size will
do here. There is a further single blade on the
top of the n and two more aerial masts on the
upper fuselage to attach the complex array
of aerial wires that will follow. With the wing
oats and drop tans in position, as well as the
little landing lights, its time for the nal nish
of tracolor at varnish, a spray of dar
exhaust staining across the top wing, and its
time to sit back and take stock of the new
1:48 Albatross.
Worrying is the size of the
horizontal tail sections. These
appear to have too great a chord
by about 4mm, which is a sizeable
amount. Its not easy to x without
major surgery and with the rudder
being about 2mm too wide as well
it means the whole tail looks just a
little too fat

T
he concept of a simple, cheap,
reliable and easy-to-fly aeroplane
was foremost in Sir Geoffrey
de Havillands mind when his
aviation company embarked
on the design and production of the Moth
series of biplanes in the mid-1920s. His
dream was to promote flying to a wider
section of the population at a time when
growing enthusiasm towards aviation was
influenced by widely publicised record-
breaking feats.
First in line was the DH.60, which performed
its maiden ight at the companys aireld at
Stag Lane on 22nd February 1925. It soon
gained popular support making it an instant
success, so much so that the Director of Civil
Aviation, Sir Sefton Brancker, ordered the
acquisition of 90 examples for the growing
number of governmentsponsored ying
clubs. As supplies of the Cirrus engine that
originally powered the DH.60 began to dry out
De Havilland sought the assistance of engine
designer Major Frank Halford to provide an
alternative power plant. By 1927 tests of the
four-cylinder Gypsy had produced encouraging
results, producing 135hp for a weight of 295lb.
Most importantly, the Gypsy was a completely
new engine and did not rely on the availability
of ex-World War One parts salvaged from the
eight-cylinder Renault engines. Derated to
50hp it became the standard power plant for
the . the following year, ying for the
rst time in the companyowned oth
and soon became known as the Gypsy Moth.
Further development of both engine and
airframe resulted in the Gypsy II that provided
120hp and the Gypsy III of 130hp, the latter
becoming known as the Gypsy Major. Building
the engines in house meant that De Havilland
could streamline its production facilities to
build engines and airframes in parallel and in
equal numbers. Airframe development was
centred around the replacement of the original
wooden-frame fuselage construction by a
welded steel tube fuselage structure in the
DH.60M, thus becoming known as the Metal
oth. This was also the rst oth design to
be acquired by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in
substantial numbers and was also built under
licence in Australia, the United States, Canada
and Norway.

Moth due to the proximity of the aircrafts fuel
tank in the top wing centre section placed
directly above the front cockpit. A solution
was found by moving the tanks position
forward while sweeping the wings back to
maintain centre of lift without major redesign
to the fuselage. Both occupants were also
provided with fold-down doors on both sides
of the cockpits. Design and development of
this new version was, in itself, an amazing
feat by the design team led by Arthur Hagg,
assisted by F.T. Hearle and F.C. Plumb. A
dismantled Moth airframe was used as a full-
scale mock-up and the new machine evolved
without the aid of the drawing department!
A prototype was ordered against Air Ministry
pecication , which was based on the
DH.60T with the incorporation of staggered
and swept-back wings together with increased
dihedral to the lower wings. The result was

n the wae of a possible invasion of ritish
territory after the fall of France in the summer
of plans were in hand to convert as
many available aircraft for defensive purposes,
and the rst modication considered for the
Tiger Moth was its possibility of carrying
small calibre bombs to be used against
ground troops. eamples were tted with
bomb racks as part of Operation Banquet,
a British plan to use every available aircraft
in a desperate effort to repel a possibility of
invasion hatched on th uly by the
AOC-in-C, Training Command.
While University Air Squadrons and the

years to y the Tiger oth after the end of
the econd orld ar, the found that a
considerable number of trainers were surplus
to reuirements and were sold to ying clubs
and individuals. Most of these continued to
y to the present day. The type is also well
represented in aviation museums all over the
world. Certainly among the foremost reasons
for its longevity is that the Tiger Moth is easy
to y, cheap to run and maintain and can be
easily adopted for a number of roles. Not to be
forgotten the number of times the type acted
as a stand in, at times eternally modied, for
other aircraft in a number of lms.

KIT BUILD
Built & Written by Alan Price from the UK
48 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - January 2014
The Bf 110 had until fairly recently been a bit of a neglected subject. True, there were a number
of kits of it but these were all fairly old and the type was in need of a refresh.
A
irfix arrived on the scene with
a new kit which was pretty
good, certainly better than
anything else on the market
in 1:72 at the time. I built
that kit for MAI back in Issue 73. Shortly
after the Airfix kit, Eduard released their
offering, which received instant acclaim
for its accuracy and detail. For our build
here, we have the Eduard Bf 110 with the
full set of their upgrades from the Brassin
range, comprising wheels, nose guns and
engine (there is also a cockpit set now
available which was not at the time of this
build). The kit is packaged in the typical
colourful Eduard box with great artwork on
the top and representations of the colour
schemes on the side. Inside is packed a
mass of sprues in a colour not dissimilar to
RLM 02. Everything is separately bagged
including a very large sprue containing
all the clear parts. The moulding is simply
first class, beautiful fine, engraved panel
lines and rivets adorn the parts. Eduard
even supplies two entire fuselages just so
you dont have to glue on the extended

tail if you wish to build that version. The
instructions are in a booklet style and I do
find Eduards part placements a little vague
at times, an arrow in the general direction
of something is not too helpful, a little more
clarity for such a detailed kit would help.
That said, they are comprehensive and the
colour/marking guides are very well done.
A lovely pre-painted photo-etch sheet is
included as is an equally nice decal sheet
more on this later. The Brassin sets are
splendid and all the parts have minimal
attachments to the pour stubs for easy
clean-up. The engine is incredibly detailed
but the builder is left to source suitable
material to make some hoses - it would
have been nice to have this included with
the set. Another surprise are the Brassin
wheels, which though stunningly well
moulded are not weighted or flattened.
Even the pocket money Airfix kit managed
this
Time to crack on with the build and this
begins with the cockpit. The amount of detail
included with the photo-etch is phenomenal in
this scale and careful study of the instructions
is called for. I painted everything with Gunze-
Sangyo H070 RLM 02 before attaching the
photo-etched parts and then picked out a few
details with some enamels. The fuselage itself
tted together perfectly, the seams needed
almost no attention. Remember to scribe a line
down the join top and bottom of the fuselage
from the wings back to the tail, as there was
a panel join where the two halves of the
fuselage were ed together. The port wing
needs a little modication to t the rassin
engine, the Eduard instructions again are a
little vague here in places so study carefully

KIT BUILD
The cockpit is very comprehensively detailed. The whole interior was painted RLM 02 before
picking out the details in various colours and adding the photo-etched parts
The completed interior is a little gem its hard to see how the new Brassin cockpit could
improve on this!
50 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - January 2014
Stage-by-Stage - Construction
The wing needs altering to t the Brassin engine set; follow the
instructions carefully here to ensure the wing is cut correctly
Assembly moved on at a pace due to the simple nature of the
build and the superb t. In no time the bulk of the airframe was
together. A little rescribing was needed on the fuselage to repair
detail which was damaged during clean-up
With the tail surfaces on, the airframe is just about complete
BF 110E.indd 4 04/12/2013 17:01

The instructions are in a booklet style and I do nd Eduards part placements a little vague at times, an
arrow in the general direction of something is not too helpful, a little more clarity for such a detailed kit
would help. That said, they are comprehensive and the colour/marking guides are very well done
The Brassin engine and nose are tted prior to painting and although the engine is a little ddly
to t, the nose ts perfectly
I replaced the photo-etched aerial under the fuselage with brass wire, which would be a little
more substantial than the rather delicate photo-etched one. The actuators for the tail surfaces
were tricky to fit, having no locating points
and do plenty of dry ts to ensure everything
goes together properly. had the duard
eterior detail photoetched set too and this
includes the inner framing for the nacelles.
found this impossible to t as the frames have
straight edges but the inside of the nacelle
is curved. The solution would be to scribe
lines to t the frames into but this needs to be
done before gluing the halves together. ith
the wings assembled a test t to the fuselage
showed that the upper edge of each wing was
a little low compared to the mating surfaces
on the fuselage sides. ather than ll this after
assembly, cut some small sections of sprue
to wedge in between the open ends of the
wings to push the upper edge a little higher.
fter a little ddling around adusting the size,
this gave me a perfect t and the wing was
then glued into place. ith the tail surfaces
also on, the cleanup was done in no time
at all and other than a couple of dabs of r
urfacer, no ller was needed.
turned my attention to the resin parts net
and added the nose, leaving the guns off till
the end. The engine was detailed as per the
duard instructions and then painted with
Tamiya , T lac. fter applying
gloss, a brown oil wash gave the engine a
grimy appearance. found the engine bearers
made the engine point up in the air slightly
and had to shorten the lower mounts to get the
engine to sit in the correct position. This may
be related to the t of the rewall, though had
cut it where duard show in the instructions,
but it may be that it needs to be a millimetre
or so further bac to mae the angle of the
bulhead a little steeper, thus lowering the
engine, but couldnt adust this as d glued
the nacelle on by this point. The engine is also
a little wide for the nacelle and a bit of trimming
here and there was needed to get things to t.
There are uite a few small parts to t before

painting and a fair bit of photo-etched;
all this takes time but after a few more
evenings it was ready for paint. I left
off the guns and some other tiny parts
that were bound to get broken, to be
attached right at the end.
Paint & Markings
I began the painting process by masking
everything off, with foam blocks pushed
into the cockpit and wheel wells. Id
attached the front section of the canopy
and this was masked with the supplied
masks. Its worth noting Eduard dont
supply the masks for the tiny triangular
windows at the top of this part of the
canopy, so I made these myself from
some offcuts from the mask sheet. The
model was rst coated with Tamiya
XF-83 Medium Sea Grey to act as a
neutral undercoat. This was then pre-
shaded with blac. The camouage was
a fairly standard RLM 74/75/76 scheme
with a heavy mottle on the sides. I
started with the underside blue using
Gunze-Sangyo H417 RLM 76. Once
dry I masked off the underside and the
fuselage and applied the camouage
scheme freehand with Gunze-Sangyo
H068 RLM 74 and H069 RLM75. I
wasnt happy with the effect, for some
reason I just couldnt get the splinter
scheme to look right and in the end I
masked the edges and gave the colours
a hard edge; this seemed to work better

Paint, Markings & Weathering
A pre-shade with black is the next stage in painting The light blue goes on next, just enough to allow the pre-
shading to show through
The upper wing surfaces were next airbrushed with the splinter
scheme and a hard-edge demarcation was used
The fuselage and tail surfaces were then painted with the splinter
scheme and nally the mottling was added to the sides of the fuselage
A fairly heavy mottle was applied to match the scheme shown in the instructions

and I was happy with the result. The top of the
fuselage was then unmasked and the splinter
scheme painted. The sides were unmasked
and the mottling done with very thin paint at
low pressure (around 12psi). The aircraft I was
building had yellow markings under the wings
and fuselage so with all the masking removed,
these areas were then masked and airbrushed
rst with unzeangyo lat hite then

ollowing a coat of icroscale icro loss,
it was time for the decals. The sheet supplied
is very comprehensive including a lot of tiny

spares for a lot of these. owever, was not
too impressed with the decals as there were
a number of register issues. The swastikas
were unusable as the white was so far off
the black and a number of the small stencils
had issues too. The yellow outline for the
on the fuselage codes was also slightly out

of line. was going to attempt to this
after completing the build but it was ust
too delicate to wor on so in the end
left it. The decals too three sessions to
apply and responded nicely to my usual
icroscale setting solutions. fter a wash
down, another coat of gloss sealed things
ready for the pin wash using heavily
thinned umbrol lac. ith the wash
completed decided to give the build
a light coat of icroscale icro lat in
preparation for a bit of weathering as
the thin paints used tae better to a matt

adding the ehausts, undercarriage and
undercarriage doors. used some heavily
thinned Tamiya redbrown blac for
some postshading on panel lines then
a similarly thin mi of Tamiya
T lac and some white to mae the
ehaust stains.
Final Details
The remaining aerials and small parts
were attached net. duard dont provide
any locating pins for these small parts,
which means that the tiny balance weights
and aerials are ust buttglued to the
locating points on the airframe. This is not
very secure and noced off the balance
weights a number of times nother light
I added the undercarriage at this point to make the build easier to
handle. A second coat of gloss prepared the build for the pin wash

FINAL VERDICT
An absolutely superb kit, its hard to fault it. The decals were the only real issue with the
register fault on my sheet, but this may be an isolated incident. The resin parts used here
do raise this from being a beginners kit to a little more advanced level but if you fancy
the easy life there is always the Weekend edition without the photo-etched parts. That
version is not a lot more than the ir it and its a lot more accurate. This has to be,
without a doubt, the best Bf 110 to date in this scale.
Was it worth the effort?
Yes, worth every penny.
coat of at now completed the nish and
removed the canopy masking and attached
all the clear sections. The guns were added
to the nose section and d airbrushed these
with some Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black and then
dry brushed them with some Humbrol 27004
Gun Metal, which was then burnished with a
stiff brush. With the propellers and wheels on,
just the landing lights and aerial leads from
stretched sprue were needed and the build
was complete.

T
he MiG-25 is big, so the deep, large box is no surprise, nor are the masses of sprues inside. The twelve
grey-coloured sprues contain over 300 parts with the upper and lower mid/rear fuselage halves offered
as separately packed components. You also get a clear sprue of eight parts and an etched brass fret
containing eight pieces. The instruction booklet takes you through assembly via 17 pages of clear
diagrams and you also get a separate diagram showing you the various weapons you can t to the
pylons etc. The outer wrap of the instructions is in colour and offer the painting and decalling guide, as well as
details of the various weapons included. These latter items comprise FAB500 and 1500 bombs, R-60, R-40R and
R-40T missiles and the large drop tanks. The breakdown of the parts shows that other versions are planned, as
the entire forward fuselage/cockpit/nose is a separate sub-assembly. The massive exhaust cans are included, to
give a nice deep effect in the rear fuselage, but Kitty Hawk have not wasted time and money offering you both
engines that would then be hidden. Once again the undercarriage is shown installed before the bays go inside
the fuselage, as they did with their Jaguar kit, but this time it does not look essential, so hopefully they can be
omitted and added at the end to save the risk of damage. You are going to need a lot of weight forward of the
cocpit and although small areas are identied as needing weight adding during assembly, inside the bo is a
large ball bearing, which we presume is a nose weight that needs to be tted between cocpit and forward nose
radar unit shown in stages 16 and 17, but no mention is made of it in the instructions? You also get a full radar
unit should you wish to pose the radome hinged to one side, but that spoils the lines of the type, we feel.
The kit offers three decal options: Blue 75 of the Russian AF in 1979; Blue 56 of the Ukrainian Air Force;
nidentied machine of the rai ir orce. o other details about units, bases or locations are included in the
instructions, which is a shame. ll colours are identied by unzeangyo r olor paints, although all are
identied by a full name and, where applicable, an number albeit that these are going to be approimates
as the ussians did not use the system. The decal sheet is well printed, has a light sheen to the nish and
includes a full set of airframe and ordnance stencils.

Verdict: The Foxbat in 1:48 is probably one of the most wanted types, because up until now all you had
was the old Lindberg kit. This is certainly a modern tooling, maybe not as rened as some, but overall a
very good product and one that we highly recommend to all post-war Russian aviation fans. Our thanks
to Kitty Hawk Models for the review sample.

aving given us the newly tooled GR Mk 1(#A03003) a few months ago (See Issue
99), Airfix have now produced the GR Mk 3 version and although it uses much of
the GR Mk 1, the number of new parts is such that it has leapt up a series and is
thus half as much again. Inside the box you will find the usual grey-coloured plastic
sprues containing 98 grey and five clear components. Assembly follows similar
lines to the GR Mk 1, so you build up the cockpit tub first, then the intakes on either side of the
fuselage before adding the compressor blades and gluing the fuselage together. Options include
having the undercarriage up for an in-flight pose, although to do this you have to buy the
stand separately, and you also have the intake bleed doors either open or closed. The neat aft
position of the join on the exhaust cans is repeated here as it was on the GR Mk 1, so no worries
about unsightly seams. Two types of laser-ranger nose are included and ordnance-wise you get
Sidewinders, tanks, Aden cannon pods and Matra rocket launchers.
The it offers two decal options , o. () uadron, ermes ir roup, outh tlantic,
ay ; , o. () n, tersloh, ermany, . The decals are nicely printed, albeit
matt, and include a full set of stencils for airframe and ordnance.

Verdict: If like me you remember the old GR Mk 3 kit, with the horrible linkage to the nozzles
that we all got covered in glue, then this new tooling is just about as far away from that as
you can possibly get! It is truly a quantum leap in quality, detail and production and it is highly
recommended to all, without reservation. Our thanks to Hornby Hobbies Ltd for the review sample.

T
his kit has been a while in the making, as it was first announced back
in 2007. In the largish box you will find eight grey-coloured sprues and
a single one in clear plastic. These offer 254 grey and 18 clear parts
and for a change there are no etched, rubber or metal parts. The kit has
much in common with their 1:48 version so you get a full interior with all
the fuel cells etc., crew positions and gun stations. Assembly is quite easy though,
and all done in 11 stages, but there is still good detail throughout and you get
separate control surfaces and flaps plus a complement of three torpedoes. Oddly,
the ventral gondola is devoid of any interior detail at all?
The it offers two decal options r., of an unidentied uftwaffe unit;
W/Nr.0034, ex-F8+GW, which was captured and used in the USSR. The decals include
all unique and national insignia, although the swastikas are split in half and there are no
stencils. t is interesting to note that the rst option most liely never carried torpedoes, it
also had a different gun turret cupola for the front upper than that offered in the kit, and
almost certainly never had the ring around the world insignia on the fuselage/nose sides

Verdict: The link to its 1:48 brother tells in the amount of detail, but some will
shudder at the price, as it is almost double the new-tooled Revell example (See
Issue 20), but this one does have a lot more detail with all the potential therein.
Best to junk the decals, use some aftermarket and check your references, but
overall it is recommended to all Luftwaffe modellers, and our thanks to Pocketbond

aving done the E.III (see Issue 94) Wingnut have now turned their
attention to the later E.IV with this kit. It comes in their usual style of box
and we are glad to see the nice clear (crinkly) plastic bags containing all
the parts once again, as we were not fans of the cloudy, sloppy bags they
used for a while there. Inside you will find eight grey-coloured sprues
containing 106 parts, some of the sprues are common with the E.I/III/IV series
(x4), whilst others are just for the E.IV (x3) and the final one is just for the engine.
A single clear plastic sprue offers five parts, but only two are used here. The little
etched fret contains 20 parts, of which 18 are used in this version. The instructions
are their usual impressive booklet, supporting the assembly stages with period
photographs and diagrams. Assembly is achieved in just eight stages, it is a simple
monoplane after all, then you get a clear rigging diagram with a couple of nice
period images to support this, which are reproduced nice and big.
The kit offers five decal options: 122/15 prototype, flown by Anthony Fokker
and to arschau, eptember ; , flown by a mmelmann, ,
anuary ; , flown by arl lbert, lbert esterreicher, lfred ehn,
ilhelm ierec and urt intgens, , midlate ; , flown by t.
ller of est , pril ; , flown by urt tudent, oerstaffel,
August 1916. The large decal sheet includes all the national insignia for each
option, as they all seem to differ, plus unique markings and a full set of stencils

their basic moulds and it is also good to see the quality of their packaging going back
up once again, as it is a small thing, but it makes all the difference in how we view
the worth of a kit! Highly recommended to all WWI modellers, and our thanks to

Verdict: The sprues carry a 1995 and are made
in China, they have a mix of engraved hinge
lines and raised panel lines and access hatches,
so by todays standard this one already looks
very dated. Probably not anyones choice for
the F/A-18C in 1:48, the only things going for it
being neat decals and a very low retail price!

Verdict: The P-38 series from RS are actually
very good, better detailed than all the older
kits and easier to build (and cheaper) than the
Dragon ones. They are not 100% mainstream,
but not that far off, so if you have some
experience working with their more recent
releases this one is highly recommended. Our

Soviet Naval Aviation 1946-1991
by Y. Gordon & D. Komissarov / Hikoki Publications / ISBN: 978-1-902109-27-5 /
Price Guide: 34.95/$56.95 / 368-page, A4, hardback with separate dust jacket / English
This new title charts the development and operational service of Naval aviation in Russia in the stated
timeframe. The narrative starts by taking an overall look at Soviet naval aviation in the post-war years then
moves on to loo in detail at maritime reconnaissance, strie aircraft, antisubmarine operations, ghters
and attack aircraft and auxiliary and special mission aircraft. All of those instances that brought Soviet
naval aviation into conict with estern powers are charted net, along with a detailed chapter on the
oviet aircraft carriers before it signed off by looing at the nal days of naval aviation before the fall of
the wall in . The nal chapter is a detailed list of all the principal aircraft and weapons used by oviet
naval aviation. The whole thing is heavily illustrated with a great number of black & white and colour period
images and a good selection of modern colour side proles.

VERDI CT: A VERY USEFUL TITLE FOR THE MODELLER, AS IT SHOWS THESE MACHINES IN SERVICE, SO WITH THEIR CORRECT PAYLOAD
AND ORDNANCE, AND SOME OF THEM ARE VERY WEATHERED INDEED, WHICH IS EXTREMELY USEFUL WHEN MODELLING ANY SUBJECT.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL POST-WAR SOVIET AVIATION FANS, AND OUR THANKS TO CRCY FOR THE REVIEW SAMPLE.

B-25J
Mitchell in
combat over
Europe (MTO)
by M. Katarzynski /
Kagero Publishing /
ISBN: 978-83-62878-65-9
/ Price Guide: 12.99 /
80-page, A4, laminated
card cover / English
One of the latest additions
to the SMI Library, which
covers the use of a specic
type during a specic period
and theatre and combines
the historical text with colour
proles, some of which are
offered on the enclosed
decal sheet. In this case the
title looks at the use of the
B-25J over Europe (MTI),
which seems confusing?
The types covered inside
in fact cover both theatres,
with them operating over
Europe, but from bases in
the Mediterranean, so that explains things. The narrative is restricted
to a couple of pages setting the scene, then the remainder is visual,
being mainly period black and white images, all produced nice and big
with images of nose art in close-up and extensive captions. Towards the
back you get nine pages of period colour images, then pin-up nose art
and group badges followed by fourview colour proles of four s,
of which three are offered on the enclosed decal sheet in , and
scales. The decals only offer the uniue marings for each option so
the standard national insignia and stencils will have to come from the kit
or elsewhere.
VERDI CT: OBVIOUSLY INTENDED FOR THE MODELLER, THIS IS A VERY USEFUL SERIES, SO IF
YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE B-25J IT IS RECOMMENDED, ESPECIALLY THOSE LOOKING FOR AN
ALTERNATIVE SCHEME FOR THEIR HK MODELS 1:32 KIT! OUR THANKS TO CASEMATE UK FOR
THE REVIEW SAMPLE.

LAmiot 143
by J. Ribeiro & M. Ledet / Editions Lela Presse /
ISBN: 978-2-914017-75-6 / Price Guide: 55.00 / 382-page,
A4, hardback / French
The miot series is probably well nown to most modellers, as it
epitomised French design of the era, in that it was just so ugly (sorry,
it must be what they
call French style)!
Basically a block of
ats with wings the
miot was ust one
of a series of designs
from the miot
through to the and
all of these are covered
in this new title. Lela
resse product superb
titles and this is one
is no exception, as it
is packed with nice
sharp period black
and white images and
a good selection of
modern side proles.
Although the text is of
little use unless you
can read French, and
sadly all the photo
captions are also only
in French, the images
themselves speak
volumes and you will
nd stuff in here that
you would never dreamed existed - forget just cockpit images, this
books contains an almost photographic parts list! Operational use
and service allocation of the type is also well covered, with lists of
suadrons and locations, and there is even a detailed history for
every built.

VERDI CT: SUPERB AND REALLY USEFUL FOR THE MODELLER DOWN TO THE SHEER
VOLUME OF INFORMATION OFFERED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHS. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
TO ALL FRENCH AVIATION FANS, AND OUR THANKS TO EDITIONS LELA PRESSE FOR THE
REVIEW SAMPLE.
