Handout #2 Please, answer the following questions: 1. What is the purpose of this library?
The Living Library works like your local library, however, the books you borrow are "Living Books." Living Books are volunteers who share stories about their personal experiences. As a "reader" we can learn more about the diversity in the community. Living Library helps people to understand each other better by engaging in one conversation at a time. Living Books are available for checkout at libraries, and they are available to speak to groups of people in Calgary.

2. How many people give a description of the library? Who are they?
Six people give a description of the library. They are living books or volunteers and readers.

3. What is different about the books in this library?


They are not just books; they are living books telling their own life experiences. _____________________________________

Living Librarys commitment to engagement, inclusivity, and their innovative way of supporting Calgarians in learning about (1) diverse / different social identities is what set the group apart from other nominees. The groups use of volunteers as Living Books to promote a cultural understanding is both innovative and (2) highly / really effective. Without volunteering they could not offer the programme, the volunteers play an integral part in the organization and in the Living Library.

2. What characteristics or qualities do volunteers have?


They are generous; they're open of spirit; and theyre willing to share very personal details with people they dont know.

3. What does the Living Programme encourage? It encourages the dialogue and the discussion in the community.
