Useful resources for teaching about sun safety

The following resources can support teachers in planning and delivering sun safety education in Queensland schools. As with any resource, it is important that teachers check content to ensure it is suitable for their class group. The principal makes decisions, in consultation with the school community, as to the inclusion of resources in school-based programs.

This website explains the National SunSmart schools program and the SunSmart policy guidelines for school settings. The site also describes new resources available for schools and how to access them. Available resources include: SunSmart countdown and the accompanying activity sheet, lyrics, sheet music and instrumental version. This resource was developed by the Cancer Council Victoria, 2008. http://www.sunsmart.com.au/protecting_others/at_school/sunsmart_countdown Kidskin Middle Primary School Sun Safety Education Resource. This free resource is a comprehensive encyclopaedia of skin cancer prevention information and contains teachers notes, background information, parent education sheets and classroom activities which align with the education curricula for Queensland primary schools. Queensland Healths interactive sunsafety game Falons Quest http://www.health.qld.gov.au/sunsafety/game.asp Falons Quest is designed for primary students from Years 3 7. The story is about Falon, an inter-space hero, who travels to other planets to learn how his people can be protected from the suns harmful rays. The game is web based and consists of three levels. It is located on Queensland Healths website.
