Important Information for Parents Marshwood High School: French Mademoiselle Piper (D202)

Bonjour! It is a pleasure to have your student in my classroom this year. I look forward to the many accomplishments we will achieve together in the world of foreign language learning. I am here to promote and assist in your students scholastic success. Thank you for the effort, time, help, and support you offer towards your students education. It is going to be a great year!
Teacher Contact The best way to contact me is through email. My email address is caitlin.piper@rsu35.org. I am happy to discuss your students progress in French through phone call appointments and conferences. To ensure the privacy of and time for our discussions, phone calls and conferences must be arranged through email. Email Students - I email students regarding important reminders, study guides, resources, travel opportunities, audio recordings, etc. throughout the course of the school year. Please encourage your student to check his or her RSU35 email account (firstname.lastname@rsu35.org) often. Parents - I email parents regularly throughout the school year regarding important course reminders, missing/late homework assignments, failing grades, class events, etc. Emails are sent to parents through the email address listed on Infinite Campus. Please be sure to check this email account often. Homework Assignments, Infinite Campus, and Grading Homework is an essential component of every French course. Homework provides students with the opportunity to practice and reinforce their French skills. Please check in with your student and their homework completion. Homework is posted daily on the board and online on the district and course website. Please check the online document for current/upcoming assignments, and Infinite Campus for any miss or late work. For specific information regarding course grades, please see the course syllabus. Extra Help If your student is struggling with French or simply interested in additional review. Please encourage him or her to come in for extra help.
After/Before School - I am usually available before (7:00AM-7:25AM) or after school (2:20PM - 4:30PM). I post my availability for the week on a board in my classroom. Please encourage your student to sign up for a time on the board in my room if they are seeking extra help. During Study Hall - Students are welcome to come in for extra help during their study hall, if he or she has study hall during 2nd or 6th period this year. Peer Tutoring - French students have the opportunity to receive peer tutoring from a French student. If your child is interested in working with another French student from a higher level of French for extra help, please encourage him or her to contact me.

Course Website: I created a course website for each level of French. These websites include daily homework assignments, review games, , interesting articles, study guides and more! Please encourage your student to utilize this resource.

Tips for Success How can I help my student succeed in French class? Agenda Checks - Assignments are posted on the board and online daily. Students understand that is is their responsibility to record assignments in their agenda. Please check to make sure your child has completed the assignments listed in their agenda. Organization - As the year progresses, students will collect several papers in their binders. To help your student stay organized, help them sort through and throw away old papers. Create a file for important papers from previous units to keep at home. Encouragement & Support - Learning a foreign language can be intimidating and overwhelming at times. Please reward achievement and promote culturally relevant opportunities for your student whenever possible. Stay Connected - As I previously mentioned, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you have regarding your students progress in my course. Frequent communication between teacher and parents provides the student with a solid support system, which will enhance and improve learning. but what if I dont speak French? You do not have to be a French speaker to be capable in helping your child prepare and review for French class. One great way to become a part of your childs learning is to review vocabulary with them or request for your child to teach you the topics they are currently learning in class. If you didnt know French before, you will certainly learn some through these activities! but what if I DO speak French? For those of you who do speak French or have French-speaking relatives, please use French as frequently as possible at home. The best way to learn a foreign language is through total immersion. However, please allow students for opportunities for self-correction on assignments. Additional Opportunities French Honor Society: La Lgion dhonneur La Lgion dhonneur is sponsored locally. The purpose of the organization is to recognize high achievement in French and to promote continuing interest in the French language. Selection is done in at the end of the 2nd quarter. In order to qualify, students must be enrolled in French III, IV or V and have an average of 92 or above during the previous year of French (II, III or IV) and the first semester of the current year. French Club French Club meets Thursdays after school in room D202 from 2:20PM-3:20PM with the intent to further students cultural understanding and appreciation of the Francophone world in a relaxed setting. Opportunities for student leadership are available through serving as an officer for the group. Students need not to attend every week to be a part of French Club.
