Daily Model Protocol
Guidelines:

1) Raise hands to contribute; the current speaker chooses the next contributor. If no one raises his/her
hand, the speaker may call on someone.

2) All students must contribute; you may not pass if called upon. You can always ask a question.

3) When you are contributing, please begin by summarizing/re-stating the previous speaker’s point or
question, then connecting to your comment, question, or point.

4) You may knock on your desk AT THE END OF A PERSON’S COMMENTS to show support or
agreement.

5) No side conversations, even if they are about the book.

6) When in doubt, GO TO THE TEXT!

90-100 • Student builds upon the speaker before him/her

• Student provides subtle and sophisticated analysis
3 • Student is prepared with notes and text
• Student contributes more than once to the discussion
85 • Student builds upon the speaker before him
• Student provides examples from the text
• Student demonstrates preparation
2 • Student contributes more than once to the discussion
• Student listens attentively to other speakers
75 • Student provides little to no textual reference, but shows evidence of having done the
reading
• Student notes are complete, but may lack depth and/or are rushed
1 • Student contributes only once to the discussion
• Student listens to other speakers
65 • Student provides little to no textual reference, and also shows no evidence of having
done the reading. (This does not mean that teacher thinks that student has not done the
reading—it means what it says.)
• Student notes are rushed and/or incomplete
0 • Student does not contribute
50 • Student is not prepared with notes
