Intro If you think about the things that you do, all of the processes that make up of who

you are has to be controlled, in order for them to happen efficiently it has to be a control center, and this is what the nervous system does The nervous system is the control center of our body This system is responsible for sending, receiving and interpreting information from all parts of the body It is made up of specialized cells called neurons (these neurons coordinate the actions of our body and send signals throughout our body) There are 2 main parts of the nervous system The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord. The brain and spinal cord do a lot of processing and these needs to be sent to the rest of the body. Brain and spinal cord communicate with the muscles, organs, heart, with all the parts of our body to coordinate its functions The peripheral nervous system is made up of many many nerves. Its like wires running throughout the body The peripheral nervous system regulates sensation, movement, and organ function by sending information from the CNS out to the various body systems, and relaying information from these body systems back to the CNS. The peripheral nervous system has 2 types of nerves. First is the nerves of.. The somatic nervous system is responsible for the voluntary movements of our body This is made up of nerves that connect to the skin, sensory organs and all skeletal muscles In addition, the somatic nervous system is also associated with involuntary movements known as reflex arcs. During a reflex arc, muscles move involuntarily without input from the brain. This occurs when a nerve pathway connects directly to the spinal cord. Some examples of reflex arcs include jerking your hand back after accidentally touching a hot pan The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary muscles such as smooth and cardiac muscle It regulates many of our organs such as controlling heart rate, breathing and digestion The parasympathetic neurons are most active in times of relaxation Sympathetic neurons are most active in times of danger and excitement For example, when youre scared, sympathetic neurons are responsible to send signals for increasing your heart rate and blood pressure, it also makes you sweat and breathe faster.
