Editorial - Something Special
Those of you that read MAI on a regular basis will realise that writing a regular editorial is not something I do, I do not know why, maybe I just cant, or maybe I think
there are more important things to use the space for. Whatever is the case I usually only ever write an editorial for two reasons, the rst being to mark the end of
another volume the other being when something special occurs. Well, this month is something special, as it marks out the100th edition. Yes, eight years and 100
editions have passed since I took the mantle as editor of MAI, blimey! I started as an editor of a monthly title back in 1996 and I think my enjoyment of the hobby was
my main reason for doing so and it still drives me today. Throughout the year I get to talk with a great many of you at the events in the UK that I attend and although I
tend not to travel abroad any more, I have in the past and I never cease to be amazed by your
enthusiasm and sheer dedication for the hobby.
So, a big thank you to all of you out there who support me and the team at ADH by buying MAI
each month, we know you enjoy it, you tell us, and ADH is constantly striving to make it look
better and better, whilst I struggle to type and answer emails fast enough... Producing a title on a
regular monthly cycle can be hard at times (especially over the Christmas/New Year period), but
with the help of friends and contributors it has still not lost its sparkle for me. Now I cant thank
all our contributors here by name, but you know who they are and I have to just pass on a big
personal thank you to them all - nice work guys. MAI would not be complete each month without
the superb artwork of Richard J. Caruana and 2013 marks 18 years of our both working together,
so another big thank you. What does the future hold, who knows, I will certainly keep MAI up to
date and we will continue to bring you the best in kit builds with a nice mix of product reviews
and hints and tips. With all of us now in a digital age apparently, many may think that the printed
magazine is a dinosaur, but its not the case as a computer is far less user-friendly than a printed
title and, at least here in the UK, until Internet service and broadband connections are a lot faster
in all regions and free, the printed magazine is still cheaper and a lot more accessible. Besides it
gives us all some me time and long may it continue.
So, having wafed on for a bit, now on with Issue 100 as I sit here by the keyboard and
contemplate the next 100 editions.
Spitre by instalments
DeAgostini have recently turned their attention to part-
works on aircraft with a 1/12th rendition of the Spitre
Mk Vb. The kit is made up of laser-cut wooden frames
with a top skin of aluminium plates and once built the
model is 760mm long with a span of 935mm. The kit
will be supplied over 32 months at a monthly price of
28.00, so not cheap, but it is a big impressive model
that will delight fans of the type that would otherwise
probably not make models.

look at the format is sort of
familiar, maybe akin to the
Air Power Journal series
maybe? Anyway, overall
the effect is good and the
images and artwork nice and
clean. With over 200 pages
and a hardback cover the
19.99 price is amazing, but
this type of title has to nd
purchases in a more general
marketplace than just to
aviation enthusiasts, so if you
fancy either title, it may well
be worth adding to your library
as a quick one spot guide.

Stripdown
Back in 2001 Eduard released their neat little okker
Dr.I Triplane in the special Stripdown series, where
all the structure of the airframe was replicated in
etched. This was pretty early days in the whole
process, and Eduard have learnt a great deal in the
intervening 12 years, so now they have reissued
the kit, but with a big update. The whole airframe
is now etched, plus you get the plastic parts in the
kit so you could do
a solid fuselage and
etched wings or etched
fuselage with solid
wings. On top of the
three frets of etched,
you get a number of
new detail parts in
resin like the engine,
struts and tailskid,
plus there are two
big lumps of resin.
These are actually
jigs to help you bend
and form the mass
of etched and they
will have uses after
you have done this kit, that is for sure! No decals
are included, as there is nothing to put them on
really, but the kit is a special limited edition, so
buy it whilst you can, because once its gone, its

Pick-up Pencil
This is an odd cross-over from the craft side, but these
odd little pencils are idea for modellers when working
with ddly bits of plastic, resin or etched brass. The
central core is tacky, not massively, just enough, so
you touch it to the item and it picks it up, but when you
place it in position, once you get the hang of it, you will
go front or back down rst and the item will just drop
off. We have also used these to move parts around,
as the tack is good for that as well and if you slightly
moisten the core it gets a little tackier. Available in a
few specialist ranges already, at varying prices, the
ones here will be available at model shows from the
Valiant Wings Publishing stand for just 1.79 a go.
Thus far they are not available online from Valiant, but
if demand is sufcient, they may add it to their stock
list, but for now seek them out at shows and pick up
one (or more) of these highly useful little beasts!

acrylics of late and have to say that they are a quantum leap from the old paints, no more lumps and gloopy
varnish, they are quite superb and go on well with a brush or via an airbrush. It is great to have Humbrol
adding authentic colours like this once more into their range, as it is what they were known for decades
ago and it is also great to see that these paints easily meet todays standards. All Humbrol products should

I rst and the box contains two
sprues of about 70 parts and one
clear sprue with another e parts,
whilst the decal sheet is made b
Cartoraph and the instructions are in irxs
current format. One aspect of these new irx
kits that is often the cause of much debate is
the arin ualit and nesse of the surface
detail, howeer in this kit I was more than
satised because the panel lines and the fabric
rendition are ne and restrained. The enraed
lines are mabe ust a little bit too deep but
this does not matter once the are under a
coat of primer and paint but most importantl
the are complete and consistent on all parts.
The nel raised ribs and lonerons make the
fabric coered areas realistic plus there are
arious panels includin the win un access
panels that slihtl protrude from the surface,
althouh I think the rims on the fuselae sides
are perhaps a little on the hea side. Its m
opinion, howeer, that irx didnt et riht the
look of the metal panel fasteners, doin them
as rather hea riets with semiround heads,
which ou are better sandin off. The cockpit
looks decent and has a oor connected with the
construction isible under the rear lain, seat,
armour plate, control column, ro compass
and separatel moulded machine uns.
The instrument panel is part of the fuselae
assembl and the instruments are proided onl
as decals. The kit allows for the side access
doors to be opened if the fuselae sides are
cut out, but the doors seem to hae soft detail,
so I recommend ou wait until an aftermarket
set arries that will undoubtedl address this,
and some of the cockpit simplications or
omissions, for instance the unsiht that lacks
its supportin tubular structure. The enine unit
looks prett ood with nicel done indiidual
exhausts connected to the rin collector, inner
braces, oil cooler inlets and rear fuel mixture
pipework. The enine cowlin itself is diided
into four parts, with the front rin attached
to the bottom panel with exhaust pipes plus
two separate upper panels, howeer the
bules aboe the ales are too shallow.

unless of course ou dont use an airbrush or
choose a sinlecoloured camouae scheme.

The announcement of a brand new Gladiator kit among Airxs schedule for 2013
was received with delight by many modellers. Obviously the choice of subject
has not been done randomly because the Gladiator stands alongside the Spitre
and Lancaster as an icon of the RAF that can still be seen in the skies today, and
purely from an economic point of view, it makes perfect sense as well. The last
modern mainstream injected kit was from Heller which was released about 30
years ago (not counting the simplied and not very precise recent release from
HobbyBoss) and despite a number of newer short-run kits that were well detailed
and quite nice (especially the Sword kit), their nature and price meant that they
were unable to interest a broad range of modellers.

I believe painting the upper wing separately
and assembling it with the rest of airframe
afterwards seems a more logical approach, but
I confess it may not suit all. Additionally, the
struts have deep and perfectly formed recesses
that reliabl ensure correct and positie t. The
instructions offer a detailed and clear rigging
diagram, which is a nice touch, plus there are
miniature holes for the wires. The kit correctl
captures the offset position of the wheel axle
and two styles of wheel are provided (one is
weihted with separated wheel discs. The
wing gun pods have open spent cartridge
ports that look ne, althouh the seem to
be a bit slim in cross section and the gun
barrels are thick. The canopies are proided
as early and late versions and the open option
is aailable too. The camouae schemes
offer a pre-war overall Aluminium machine
from No.73 Squadron that is now depicted on
the Shuttleworth Collection example, and a
camouaed example of the Irish lin Corps.
Before commencing construction I carefully
removed with the tip of a scalpel blade the
fasteners and reproduced them with a mini-
punch I made with a srine needle. Then I
turned m attention to the cockpit and since
I planned to build the kit with closed canop
I used the kits parts without maor updates I
ust added the seat belts and the unsiht from
spares. The cockpit was then spraed in ircraft
Grey-Green for the upper half with Aluminium
for the lower, and the fuselage halves were
then closed. Next I added the separate upper
deckin with struts with instrument panel decal
glued inside, and here a little putty was needed
at the oint with the side doors the line was
then rescribed to match the thickness of the
surrounding panel lines. Once all the fuselage
seams looked O I attached the lower win
and the tailplanes, all without an trouble. The
main undercarriae les tted nicel as the
were inserted in the recesses that ensure
correct alinment. ow I could take care of
those outer struts, rst of all I cut awa those
X-shaped connections and cleaned the struts
with a sandin stick. The indiidual struts were
then secured in the lower wing, which didn't
pose any issues at all as the correct geometry
is again ensured via the precisely moulded
oalshaped recesses. The miniature holes for
the rigging I made deeper with a 0.15mm drill
bit and I also added a few that were omitted
during this phase I also prepared the upper
wing by drilling through the holes for the rigging.

ust snapped on and was secured with a tin
amount of canoacrlate as the t was perfect.

I removed the antennae mast because that
wasnt present on attles machine, plus one of
the columns on the n as well. The tropical lter
I needed was in the kit, but I was not satised
with the shape of this unit and so replaced it
with a cast item from the ala kit. I also cut off
the not very convincing rendition of the light on
the dorsal spine, lled the hole and installed a
cast liht from the CM rane instead. hen
assembling the cowling I deviated from the
instructions and glued it together without the
enine which was later inserted after paintin
if the locating pins are removed from the valves
the engine can easily put into the cowling from
behind. After general cleaning, polishing and
maskin off the canop I proceed with the
painting.
Since I already had in my collection a
ladiator in prewar markins, I utilied the
decal sheet from lanet Models 72004
Gloster Gladiator over North and East Africa)
I recentl acuired and went for . attles
machine of No.80 Squadron based in Egypt in
1940 incidentall, these markin are contained
within the Starter Set ersion of this kit too.
This plane wore the Temperate and scheme
with black and white undersides some sources
state the upper wing underside was left in
luminium. The camouae colours on period
pictures look a bit washed off with hea sins
of attrition and repainting, so the colours I used
were appropriately lightened and the surface
weathered and dusted using a light overspray
of a iht Sand colour. fter a coat of loss
arnish I applied the decals, which worked
perfectly and I can recommend them (I suspect
the are printed b O enc. rom the
kits decals I used onl the instrument panel
so I cannot fully evaluate them, but based on
previous experience with Cartograph they
should not pose any issues. On the paper they
seem to have perfect register, good colours and
the welcome addition of a set of stencils.
fter the nal matt arnish coat I continued
with the nal assembl, settin in position the
upper win rst, followed b the riin. The
individual wires were cut to length from heat-
stretched sprue, painted black, secured in the
lower wing and then pulled through the upper
win holes. fter llin and cleanin the upper
win surface I nished the paintin on this
part and applied the upper win roundels. The
main wheels look prett ood, but I eentuall
replaced them with cast resin ala items I
hae seeral ala kits that seem to be surplus
now, so wh not to rob them. The win un
barrels did not look riht in the scale so these
were exchaned for Quickboost cast resin
examples and I also removed the pitot placed
on the left strut and replaced it with ne brass
wires from the same material I also shaped the
foot step. At the end I glued to the fuselage the
assembled engine unit and installed the aerials
cut from black shin line.
FINAL VERDICT
ith no doubt this is the best mainstream inected ladiator kit to date in 1:72 and a er nice effort from irx indeed. In comparison with the more
detailed Sword kit the irx ladiator ma loose some points, but the other adantaes are obiousl on its side. Considerin the price and eas
assembl it has the potential to become et another of irxs bestsellers, especiall reboxed with attractie markins from orth frica, reece and
the Middle East, not to mention the large number of foreign users of the type.

Specication .14/35 was written around it. The prototpe 5200 rst ew in September 1934. roduction started with the Mk I powered

The tpe was also supplied to elium, China, ire, reece, atia, ithuania, orwa and Sweden.
The Mk II was powered b the Mercur III or IIIS and was built to meet Specication .3/37 with 252 bein built for the . ircraft
2252302 were modied to Sea ladiator Interim standard for the in adance of delier of 0 Sea ladiator Mk IIs, and
eihteen Mk IIs were supplied to Sweden, where the were operated as s. The nal ersion of the tpe was the Sea ladiator Mk II and

Gloster
Javelin
The Gloster Javelin
was an all-weather
interceptor aircraft that
served with Britains
Royal Air Force in the
late 1950s and most of
the 1960s. It was a
T-tailed delta-wing aircraft
designed for night and
all-weather operations and
was the last aircraft to bear
the Gloster name.

nitial impressions of the kit were good with
the usual grey-coloured and clear plastic
sprues supplemented with photo-etch and
resin components. The IIIE had a Hispano-
built Martin-Baker RM4 seat that is provided
in resin, but this raised questions as single
and loop tpe rin handles are supplied,
however some export variants were provided
with a seat modication to allow eroero
ejection, which is where the B-loop handle
comes in. The French Air Force never took
this option so if you are planning on a French
scheme use the single-loop handle.
The plastic parts themselves are good
quality, particularly the transparent one, and
engraved panel lines and raised detail are
good all round although maybe a little too
pronounced for some modellers. There was
irtuall no ash to be seen anwhere and
whilst sink holes were inevitably present, they
were thoughtfully located out of sight. The
painting instructions are well produced but I
found some colour recommendations to be
inaccurate. The camouae scheme proided
is accurate for the starboard prole and win
but the port side looked nothing like any of my
references? The simple advice is always go
with your references and Mirage III, Mirage
5, 50 and derivatives from 1955 to 2000
by Dominique Breffort and Andre Jouineau
(Histoire & Collections 2004) provides excellent,
accurate camouae schemes for all domestic
and export variants.
Construction began with the wings and
rear fuselage and a number of issues were
encountered. Firstly, there were large gaps at
the underside leadin ede. More sinicant
gaps were evident along the join of the
fuselage with the upper wing roots. These were
straihtforward to resole thouh, usin une
Sangyo Mr Dissolved Putty on the leading
edes and strene strips plus ller on the win
roots. The n presented the biest challene
as with the trailing edge set correctly there was
a sinicant ap at the leadin ede 1.5mm
that reuired more strene and ller. The onl
other problems encountered during the build
were the engine intake cowls, which would not
sit smmetricall so this was xed b addin
a slither of styrene to the port cowl. Once this
was done, the front fuselage went on with no
trouble at all. The only observation to be made
is that the Doppler blister appears to be slightly
too short at the trailing edge when compared

In my opinion the Mirage is under represented in the modelling community,
which is a mystery given its success, especially in the export market. It is
therefore nice to see this joint venture between High Planes and PJ Production
with PJ deviating from their more traditional line of resin kits to injected styrene.

to reference photos. I originally elected to go
with an allmetal nish usin arious shades
of lclad, howeer I had some problems
with the product crain I am unsure of the
cause of the issue but it ma be due to not
allowin sufcient time for the lclad black
base coat to cure sufcientl This was not
the onl reason for abandonin the natural
metal nish, thouh. rench militar aircraft
usuall hae different markins on each side
of the n, howeer the 02/13 lpes suadron
decals proided were inaccurate as the are
presented as a mirror image with a night star.
The insinia of the 2nd escadrille 2nd iht
of the C 2/13 should depict a twotone blue
representin their da and niht operational
role but without the niht star which was
remoed from the III suadrons. lso the
colour of ord aards escutcheon should be
reen on the riht and red on the left. This was
disappointin and had I noticed this before
I would hae elected for a different scheme
from the outset. Option was the 03/003
rdennes suadron and the colour chart
would hae ou usin Tamia 25 Steel
re, howeer I found Tamia 53 eutral
re to be a closer match. ith the base coat
of 53 applied, the dark reen camouae
Tamia 1 ark reen was oerlaid b
hand. The model was then ien a coat of
Microscale Micro Gloss prior to applying the
decals. The decals themseles are excellent
albeit er delicate, needin onl a uick dip
prior to placement because anthin more and
there is a real risk of the thins disinteratin
The oerall nish was then ien a hea
lter of Tamia 71 Interior reen. The nal
nish was then achieed b oin oer the
53 eutral re parts of the camouae
with heail thinned 53 eutral re within
the panels. The bell was nished in arious
shades of lclad, as was the et exhaust. inal
nishin was completed with lor Models
ark irt underneath and black on top.
Microscale Micro lat was then applied prior
to ttin of the undercarriae and canop and
stores. ead wire 0.3mm was also installed
on the main landin ear to simulate the brake
hdraulic lines. The resin fuel tanks went on
at this stae, howeer the locatin pins on
the plon did not line up with the holes in the
wins so usin the forward locatin pin I was
able to add new rear holes and locate the
tank. ob done.
FINAL VERDICT
espite some issues with the build, the kit is stranel endearin. This is because it presents
somethin of a challene for the modeller and draws on a number of basic modellin skills. I
thorouhl enoed the challene, howeer I appreciate that others ma not. This is certainl not
one for the noice and the onl real disappointment was the inaccurac of some of the decal
options. Oerall a nice kit and excellent alue for mone.

The desin studies that ultimatel lead
to the Mirae series can be said to reall
start with the M..550 Mstreelta,
a single-seat delta-wing interceptor-
hter prototpe powered b two

turboet enines. rom this came the
Mirae I, a reised prototpe tted with
a swept ertical tail and powered b two
M..30 turboet enines with reheat
and a S auxiliar rocket motor.
ext came the Mirae II, another sinle
seat interceptorhter prototpe with a
delta win which was a larer ersion of
the Mirae I and was powered b two
Turbomeca abio turboet enines,
althouh the tpe was neer actuall
completed, the onl prototpe bein
abandoned when partbuilt. The Mirae
III001 was the rst true Mirae III and
it initiall had an tar 1011 turboet
enine, but was later retted with an
tar 1012 and S auxiliar
rocket motor. rom this came the rst
preproduction series, the Mirae III,
which featured a lenthened, area rule
fuselae, was powered b an tar 9
turboet enine with reheat and had
the proision for an S 4 auxiliar
rocket motor. ust ten were built for the
rench ir orce. The Mirae III was
a twoseat tandem trainer ersion
based on the Mirae IIIC that lacked
radar, armament or the proision for
the booster rocket. The Mirae IIIC was
a sinleseat allweather interceptor/
hter with a loner fuselae, Crano
Ibis radar, two 30mm cannon and a
sinle Matra .511, ord .20 or
Matra 530 airtoair missile under the
fuselae plus two IM9 Sidewinder
missiles under the wins. The Cseries
was built as the IIIC for the Israeli ir
orce, IIICS for the Swiss ir orce,
IIIC for the South frican ir orce and
a sinle IIIC2, which was a conersion
of a Mirae III. The Mirae III series
was a twoseat trainer ersion of the
Mirae III that was built in III, III,
III, III2, III, III, IIIS,
III, III and III2 ariants. The
Mirage IIIE was a single-seat tactical
strike and hterbomber, which had a
30cm fuselae plu to accommodate
an additional aionics ba behind the
cockpit. The tpe used the Crano
II radar, had improed naiation
euipment, includin TC and a
oppler radar and was powered b
an tar 09C3 turboet enine. ain
the tpe was built in man different
ariants to meet specic nations needs
as follows: III rentina, III
rail, III2 rail, III Spain,
III ebanon, III akistan, III
eneuela, III South frica.
The decals themselves are excellent
albeit very delicate, needing only a
quick dip prior to placement because
anything more and there is a real risk of
the things disintegrating!

s you would expect this second
kit utilises some of the sprues
from the first one and this is its
only real failing. The problem is
not one of quality; both new and
old parts are well moulded and detailed.
The problem is that the rear fuselage on
the real aircraft was extended slightly to
balance the extended nose of the two-seat
variant. By using the same rear parts for
both kits the rear end comes up short on
the new kit although with a set of plans and
some plasticard the surgery wouldnt be too
difficult. Anyway lets have a look at what
you do get. On opening the box you will
find six sprues of grey-coloured and one of
clear parts, 165 and 11 respectively. The
instructions and colour decal/paint sheet
are both to HobbyBosss usual standard.
By that I mean easy to follow but with a
sometimes unusual assembly sequence.
As before the colour scheme options are
limited to two blue over green schemes,
One Russian and the other Ukrainian.
Construction begins with the cockpit tub.
This is fairly basic but with the canopy designed
to be closed it proves to be adequate with
careful painting. From there we move on to
the nose gear bay and nose undercarriage
leg. The bay was built up but the leg can be
left aside for later installation. The cockpit
tub and gear bay can now be installed in the
forward fuselage halves. Moving on we turn to
the rear fuselae. This is all as per the rst kit
with parts for the lift engines, main gear bays
and rear rotatin noles bein tted into the
rear fuselage halves. With the front and rear
fuselage sections joined the intakes can be

of the Yak-38M Forger A. When I built that original single-seat kit it was fairly
obvious from some of the additional surplus parts that the two-seater was coming
at some point. Well, here it is.

with no internal detail, so the easiest x here
would be to t some coers to hide this. The
instructions would hae ou t the canop
now but I skipped this and carried on ttin
arious airframe parts. I had built the rst kit
with the intakes for the lift enines open so
for the sake of comparison this one would be
all closed up. The doors for these needed a
bit of work with the les to et a clean t. The
wins hae the parts for the folds included
but ou do need to cut the wins to do this.
There are no hines or brackets included so
I drilled holes into the fold faces and inserted
prebent brass rods to support the outer win
sections. ith the inner wins, tailplanes and
rudder tted the airframe was nearl read
for some paint, needin ust a few smears of
ller to smooth all the oints and a few swipes
with a sandin stick saw that completed. ie
minutes with an Olfa Cutter saw an panel
lines lost in the process reinstated. The t of
the clear canop parts was ood enouh that
I was able to paint them separatel and add
them later, so armed with a roll of Tamia tape
the cockpit was masked read for paintin. I
bean with the underside reen areas and this
was done with uneSano 309 orest
reen. Once that had dried the undersides
were masked and on went the upper
uneSano 54 a lue paint. The
underside maskin was remoed and then
remasked so the wheel bas and rear exhaust
nole surrounds could be spraed with the
appropriate bare metal shades. Once aain
all but the cockpit maskin was remoed and
the model ien an oerall coat of umbrol
clear loss acrlic read for the decals to o
on. hile the clear dried thorouhl I used the
time to build and paint the plons, stores and
undercarriae parts read for later tment. I
decided to use the un pods on this one but
the barrels werent that ood so these were
sliced off and replaced with some metal tubin
cut from a lue applicator nole. Moin
back to the main airframe the decals were
applied and most went on prett well needin
ust a touch of Micro Set and Sol to bed them
down. The baremetal leadin ede decal
on the main intakes and the white tail n tip
tted reasonabl well but did need a spot of
paint to nish them off. ith the decals dr
and an excess decal solent remoed the
whole model was ien a pin wash with some
thinned re ink to brin out the enraed
detail. To ie the detail on the undercarriae
and wheel bas some depth some MI ark
ash was carefull applied with a ne brush
and an excess remoed with some odourless
thinner. I kept the weatherin to a minimum on
this one restrictin mself to a small amount
of lclad II et xhaust dusted around the
rear swiellin noles. There are a number
of small exhaust puffer noles and ents
around the aircraft and these alon with the
aerials and sensor panels were picked out
a ne brush and ames orkshop acrlics.
ettin near to the nishin line now, all of
the preiousl prepared undercarriae, doors,
plons and stores were added and the outer
folded win panels were slipped onto the
brass pins. Out with the airbrush aain to ie
whole model a coat of lclad SemiMatte clear
to blend the arious nishes toether. ith
the eection seats dropped into the cockpit the
canop parts were xed in place with acer
ormula 50 canop lue leain ust the
pitot tube to complete the model.
FINAL VERDICT
ith the completed model sittin on the bench in front of me alonside its sinleseat counterpart it does look ood in an ul sort of wa. It is a lot
loner than the sinleseat ersion to the point where the missin rear fuselae extension isnt that obious. If ou didnt know about it ou wouldnt
reall notice it until ou et out a set of plans and a ruler. or that reason I will ie this one a thumbs up as it is reasonabl priced and detailed and
builds ust as well as the rst ersion. ould I build another Certainl but it would be another sinleseat ersion. ets ust hope obboss keep
up the ood work brinin us more unusual subects in the future.
Plane Facts
The orer series started with the
ak3M, an initial preproduction
ersion that differed slihtl from the
ak3 in that it was lihter and had
enines that enerated slihtl less
power. The rst production ak3 was
the orer, which rst ew on the
15th anuar 1971, and entered serice
with the Soiet aal iation on 11th
uust 197. In all a total of 143 were
produced and it was followed b the
ak3M orer, which was an
upraded ersion with new Tumansk
2300 and binsk 3 enines
that ae an increased takeoff weiht in
TO. The tpe had enine intakes that
were slihtl widened and the plons
under the wins could carr 2,000lb.
The tpe entered serice with the Soiet
aal iation from une 195 and 50
were built. The ak3U orer was
a twoseat trainer ersion for Soiet
aal iation and it had a lenthened
forward fuselae to accommodate the
twoseat cockpit and an extended rear
fuselae to counterbalance the effect of
the elonated nose. It entered serice
on the 15th oember 197 and 3
were built with the last bein deliered
in 191.
The problem is that the rear fuselage on the real aircraft was
extended slightly to balance the extended nose of the two-seat
variant. By using the same rear parts for both kits the rear end
comes up short

this particular machine and this is probably
my favourite scale for it as well, so whats not
to like? As one of my favourites Ive waited to
build it in classic British desert colours and of
course, it had to have the famous sharkmouth as well.

K variant its also one of the great characters.

the Montex Super Masks and the Eduard
dropped flaps and lets get this show on the
road. In true Hasegawa style, they make
sure they get the best from their expensive
moulds, so they have released a number
of P-40 versions in 1:32. This one is typical
of their modern big-scale releases and is
suitably gorgeous in the box with lots of
cleanly moulded grey plastic: 13 sprues and
190 parts. There is a little flash on some
of the smaller parts but nothing to worry
about and absolutely no sinkholes or other
problems. You get a couple of sprues of
transparent bits that are all very nice and a
single large decal sheet for the versions in
the box. The instructions come as a well-
drawn booklet of 12 pages, including sprue
layout diagrams and the two-page paint and
marking guide. I opted to use the Montex
Super Mask set (#K32150) for the markings
here as I wanted a No.112 Sqn machine
and thought Id try something other than
the standard decal options. Ive not used
the Montex masks before so well see how
I coped with that one. Whats the worst that
can happen, right? Eduard do the perfect
finishing touches for just about any aircraft
these days and I limited myself to doing just
the flaps on this one, although there are
about six different sets you could add to it
to make it a bit special.
Construction starts on the innards with the
well-detailed cockpit and the nose-mounted
radiators. The interior colour is Zinc Chromate
Green from LifeColor, with an oil wash for the
shadows, a highlight of light green paint and
some silver paint chips. The only additions I
made at this point were the seat belts made
from brelass tape and leftoer buckles from
the spares box. Otherwise, the Hasegawa
plastic is all you need in there. Due to the
modular nature of the parts, produced to get
as many versions as possible with minimum

Plane Facts
The XP-40-CU or Curtiss Model 75P was a conversion based on
3 S/o.310 and the new hter desin was accepted b
USC on the 1th October 193. The rst model was the Curtiss
Model 11 armed with 2x 0.50in rownins in the nose and 2x
0.30in in the wins. This was followed b the sinle 40, then
production ersions of the 40 Model 12, 40C Model
13, 40 Model 72, 40 Model 73, 40
plus 40 and 40 prototpes and 40 and 40
prototpe. The 40 series was similar to 40 with a 1710
73 enine and the lare llet ahead of the ertical n. The 405
series had rotar ale coolers, while the 4010 had the lon
fuselae of the 405 and some were modied for cold weather
operations. The nal series was the 15, which retained the
lon fuselae, had the 10 cold weather modications, the
emerenc hdraulic sstem was remoed, the batter was moed
forward and 1,500lb of bombs could be carried under the wins
and under the fuselae on the centreline rack.

of concise instructions. It needs some kit
butcher of course, slicin reat chunks out
of the win sections and as lon as ou follow
The interior is beautifully moulded. Seat belts are the only
required addition
The nose radiators are adequate and they t precisely into
the chin
The inserts in the nose arent the best of ts but a little ller will
take care of that

Rear decking is well detailed and a big improvement on this
area on Hasegawas 1:48 kits, which are a pain

any trouble. Talking of trouble, many people
complain about the kit and the difculties of
ettin the win to t the fuselae with reat
gaps at the wing roots. Well, heres how
to stop that. In the kit is a central spar and
some ribs to box off the undercarriage bays.
The spar is part #A1 and its got that number
because it is the most important structural
bit of the whole kit. Build as per instructions,
then get some clamps and make sure that the
large lower wing section is clamped tightly to
the bottom edge of the spar. This ensures the
correct dihedral of the wings and perfect gaps
at the wing roots. With the wings in place and
dried its time to sort out the paint.
Colouring In
As I mentioned earlier, I intended to do this
one as a desert RAF machine right from the
start, so the kit markings were binned straight
away and the Montex masks brought into
play. Montex give you excellent full-colour
instructions in
the set, with two
versions on offer,
one RAF, the other
Russian, as well
as instructions
for the masking
and painting of
the fearsome
sharkmouth. No
instructions for
things like the

I opted to chop out the elevators to off-set them a little on this
one. Its easy to do with a very sharp knife and a little patience

its prole exactly and youll have no difculties with the wing t

any kind. Not bad eh?
The new internal detail parts in place; yummy!

came from the White Ensign Colourcoats
range of enamels, suitably lightened, with
patchy bits and faded panel centres. The
classic nature of the Dark Earth/ Middle
Stone/ure lue camouae makes this a
good looking machine already but just wait
till those markings go on; I could hardly wait!

a feel for how the pale green vinyl attached
itself and how easily it could be moved and
re-arranged to suit. As it turned out, it worked

yes, theres a bit of that all right.
In fact Im not going to bore
you with the seemingly endless
task of masking, remasking and
covering everything for each
and every one of the spraying
obs. Sufce it to sa it took a
couple of days and lots of paint
changes with the airbrush. But
itll all be worth it, right? As
it turned out, yes, it certainly
was worth the effort because
even the sharkmouth wasnt as
complicated as Id feared and it
looked pretty good at the end of it
all. With markings applied it was
time for weathering, sealing in
with Humbrol Clear, applying the
stencil decals and then the rather
tedious task of doin all the ddl
little bits at the end to nish it all
off. Theres a lot of those ddl
bits of course, isnt there always?
One of the problematical bits was
the aerial wire and just what did it
look like on the RAF machines?
After some time trawling about

Blue and green should not be seen, without a colour in between!
Sorry but in this case it cant be helped. Not to worry, the
weathering process will calm down both colours
The Middle Stone is a faded version of the White Ensign colour;
remember that desert sun is a harsh environment

surprisingly easy to manoeuvre around the complicated nose curves

Pastels, Tamiya Smoke and silver pencil paint chips get this looking
suitably worn
The wing roots are always some of the most badly worn areas
thanks to the ground crews clumsy boots

Fiddly bits ahoy! The kit plastic parts are very neatly moulded,
including the rotation gears for the main leg. The only additions
needed are the brake lines
Location for the oleos is positive and the drop-tank is neat,
although I would have preferred an RAF pattern 250lb bomb
here
The aerial wires are attached with tiny metal pates at the
wingtip, complete with insulators made from stretched ear-
buds. (Thats like stretching sprue, just use a plastic tube from a
cotton bud instead)

FINAL VERDICT
Well, this is one of my top 10 favourite kits so Im going to say how great it is, arent I? Yes, it is great, simple as that. All of Hasegawas new
1:32 kits are superb with excellent detail and usually pretty effortless builds. Add to that the huge number of aftermarket accessories of all
kinds for them and youre onto a winner. As soon as I saw this kit released in 2008 I knew exactly what I wanted to do to it and here it is at
long last; hope you like it because I know I do.
Was it worth the effort?

through books and on the Internet it appears
that basically no two machines had exactly
the same layout of wires. It depended on the
radio t at the time and ust how the aircraft
had been set up. In the end I followed the
standard 40 t of a wire to each wintip
and one to the insulator on the fuselage spine.
This makes it a real pain to handle but it does
look ood. inal nish is courtes of tracolors
at arnish. This was spraed on at
high pressure and quite thickly to give a rough,
sand blasted look to it. Once the gritty stuff had
dried the canopy was unmasked, repositioned
and those aerial wires were tted, and it was
ob done.
Its a fair size in this
scale so youll need a
big cabinet for display

kits that were announced not long after the take-over was one that stood head and shoulders above the rest, namely the 1:24 de Havilland Mosquito
NF Mk II/FB Mk VI. For your money you get an enormous box crammed with eighteen large sprues of crisply moulded parts, a two hundred and fty-
three stage instruction manual, full colour paint and decal placement diagrams and a huge decal sheet printed by Cartograph. I have added a small
amount of aftermarket accessories and modi ed a few things but will endeavour to point these out along the way. Additional detail was added the old
fashioned way using lead foil, brass rod and a few sizes of wire and solder. Before I go any further a word of warning: the plastic used for this kit is
very soft and the t of some components quite tight. If you try to force- t anything, even a location pin, the plastic will split or crack.

A
ssembly began in the
cockpit. As most of the
model would be painted
with an airbrush I needed
to look ahead in the
assembly sequence and work out
which parts to leave separate from the
various sub-assemblies. As the
majority of the internal parts are
Interior Green this dictated how to
proceed with the cockpit, bomb bay,
gun bays and wheel bays so that I
could spray several sub-assemblies in
one session. With this in mind the
seat minus cushions and adjustment
lever was built up followed by the
cockpit oor, bulkheads and the
rudder pedal box. The rst bit of
additional detailing I did was to add
the bracing struts to the observer's
seat backplate armour. The best
reference picture I could nd showed
four struts and these were cut from
lengths of 2mm diameter plastic rod
and xed in place with Mr Cement S.
It was time for a spraying session so
all the parts that would be Interior
Green were mounted on various
boards, bulldog clips and cocktail
sticks and given a good coat of paint.
With a kit of this complexity you can
make good use of drying time by
looking ahead and preparing parts for
later on in the build. In this case I
started putting things like the fuel
tanks, ammo cases and control
surfaces together, basically anything
that was in two halves, so that by the
time I needed them all I had to do was
clean up any glued seams or joints.
Getting back to the plot, the smaller
parts like seat cushions, rudder

pedals and sidewall detail parts were sprayed in
the appropriate colours. With most of the
cockpit parts in their base colours I could start
detail painting and weathering. Although the
maorit of the cockpit ttins are included there
is still a lot of scope for improvement. There are
a lot of smaller details that could be added but
in this case I restricted myself to things that
could be seen through the canopy and door. I
started with the throttle and propeller linkage
rods. These are moulded solid so after
measuring the kit parts the rods were cut off
and replaced with brass versions. The
instruments and gauges for the main and
electrical system panel are nicely presented,
being printed onto insert parts. These were
xed with acer ormula 50 and when
set Tamiya clear gloss was used to simulate the
glass lenses. With the various cockpit parts
installed the next obious omissions were the
various cables hooking everything up. These
were added from fuse wire and solder. The
most important addition to the cockpit visually is
to add harnesses to the pilot's and observer's
seats, unless of course you add the crew

All the undercarriage parts laid out, with the various lengths of
pipework added visible
much out of the box apart from the addition of
the cross-feed pipe between the two fuel tanks.
With the bomb/cannon bay and the tailwheel
bulkhead all painted they were, along with the
cockpit, positioned in one fuselage half. Before
the glue set I added the other half, and with a
little bit of coaxin here and there it all tted in
nicely. For speed and strength Tamiya extra thin
cement was used to nail the two halves
together before binding it all up with masking
tape while it set solid. My attention now turned
to the wing and yes, I really do think its the
biggest sprue I have ever had to deal with!
Next on the list were the separate wingtips and
here I came to the onl poorl ttin parts in the
entire kit. The were xed in place and left to
set before breaking out the Tamiya putty. This
was liberally smeared over both the top and

bottom joints and also a very long sink mark on
the upper rear edge of the inner wing. Lots of
sanding and polishing later it was ready to be
added to the fuselage. At this point near-
disaster struck. hilst ttin the win to the
fuselage it needed just a little pressure to hold it
in just the right spot. Unfortunately all it needed
was a little pressure for the fuselage to crack
from the wing root up to the cockpit opening. So
be warned, dont force the win t at all. The
control surfaces and tailplanes were added and
the elevators glued in a dropped position along
with a slight offset to the rudder. Dont forget to
position the rudder pedals and joystick to match
the control surface positionin. The onl
external detailing added was to the dinghy
compartment panel and the reinforcing strip
oer the fuselae spine at bulkhead four. The
dinghy panel should be slightly proud of the
fuselage skin so a thin skin of plasticard was
lued on top of the enraed panel. The
reinforcement strip was a strip of plastic card
simply glued in place and sanded to shape.
Looking through the instructions at steps
concerning the engines, undercarriage and
nacelles I decided to approach them in a
different order. As well as adding detail to the
undercarriage I had also wanted to modify the
main les to allow the wheels to be tted after it
was all built up. I had bought a set of resin
wheels and tyres from Mastercasters as these
allow you to sand the very prominent tread
down to a more acceptable leel. To bein with,
a length of brass rod was sourced which
matched the diameter of the hole in the wheel
centres. The main le hales were oined and

cleaned up. The axle pegs were
then cut off and a hole drilled all
the way through the two inner legs.
The outside legs were then drilled
out, but only the inside face so the
detail on their outer faces would
remain. With the undercarriage
assembled the wheel could then
be put in position and the brass
axle pushed through the leg, the
wheel and into the other leg. With
this modication done the main
legs and all the associated cross
bracing were built up and brake
lines were added using solder and
plastic tubing. I also planned to add
the door-closing cables later so
holes were drilled throuh the at
strip on the cross bracing and a
triangle of one millimetre plasticard
was added to the mudguard cross
beam, then this was drilled parallel
to the beam to simulate a pulley.

undercarriage bulkhead. The
springs themselves were formed
from brass wire wrapped around a
pin and then cut to length. These
were xed into place on the
bulkheads that were then put in
position along with the front
bulkheads. I had decided to build
the nacelles in a different order to
the instructions, as I was more
concerned about a ood t to the
wings than getting everything in.

So, after dealing with a lot of ejector pins the
undercarriage bays were painted and the
nacelles closed up before gluing them onto the
wings. The main legs and oil tanks were painted
and tted into the nacelles and while the dried
the cannon pack and bomb racks were painted
and assembled read for ttin. The 0.303in
machine guns were all bent at the breech end
of the barrel on my kit. My answer to this was
to cut the barrels off at this point, straighten
them and then drill and pin them with brass rod;
this also meant I could make life easier by
adding the barrels right at the end of the build.
The cannon pack builds up well but an extra set
of ners would hae been useful at times, it
was a bit ddl in places. The uns with
ammunition boxes and bomb racks were placed
into their releant bas allowin me to add the
bomb ba side panels. The next modication
reards the 0.303in machine un ammo feed
belts. These are moulded on the black inl
sprue, as the hae to be twisted throuh ninet
degrees between the ammo case and gun
breech. This is ne apart from the fact I couldnt
nd an paint that would stick to them often
with exible plastics it can work if ou coat them
with PVA before painting? - Ed). The solution
was to nd some thick lead foil and replicate
them in this material. The nose cone with its
gun camera could now be added. The engines
were next and here the only alteration was to
leae the propeller hubs remoable. The
engines were painted pretty much as per the
instructions apart from a few little touches I
could see in my references. I understand that
when built the enines were painted oerall
black but wheneer somethin was remoed for
sericin or repair the parts were cleaned and
paint stripped. Hence mine has had its
supercharers sericed and the ales
adusted. The enines were tted now, m
method was a tight squeeze but it does work if
oure careful. ll the plumbin was painted and
added next. The engines and undercarriage
bays were masked with Post-it Notes and
Tamiya tape. The cockpit opening was taped up
while the model was ien a coat of primer and
while this was drying the canopy was prepared
and masked.
Paint & Markings
ith the primer and an little aws smoothed
out the canopy was tacked into position
with and ien a coat of Interior reen.
My choice of scheme dictated the painting
seuence so with m trust Sata raf2 airbrush
in hand the rst colour to o on was the Sk
band around the tail and when that had dried
the stripe was masked with some 18mm Tamiya
tape. The top surface camouae came next
startin with the Ocean re followed b the
ark reen spraed freehand. hen that had
all dried the top surfaces were masked off ready
to tackle the underside. Next was a good coat
of white where the inasion stripes would be,
then the white portions were masked and the
black was applied. When dry the black stripes
were masked read for the oerall Medium Sea
re. lon spra session later and this was on
so that when that had all dried all the masking
except the canopy could come off. A coat of
ohnsons lear sealed the paint and ae me
a ood surface to appl the decals. Moin
on to the decals, the kit national markings
and stencilling went on with no problems
whatsoeer with a ust a touch of Micro Set
and Sol. The aircraft I had selected from the
tradecal sheet was in serice with o.44 Sn
prior to a so the codes and identication
number are supplied as full characters. This
meant some cutting with a sharp scalpel and
steel rule as the were partiall oerpainted
alon with the Sk band b the inasion stripes.
The resin wheels and tyres were painted
up and ien a coat of uropean arth MI
pigment around the treaded face. The excess
piment on the tread blocks was remoed with
a damp cotton bud.
Final Assembly

FINAL VERDICT
I must admit that this write-up has tried to cover most of the build blow-by-blow but as you will have no doubt noticed there is a lot more to
this build than I could t in. The onl real criticism I can put forward is the eector pin marks that were a real pain to deal with. I must admit
to bein biased as I loe the Mosuito but puttin that aside I can honestl sa that this is a reall fun kit to put toether. Sittin there it is a
lare model with a lot of detail and ou do feel oue ot our mones worth from it. ell done irx, this is the best kit oue eer done.

Shorter lenths were run from the rear of the
doors down to the rear bulkhead to meet up
with the tensionin sprins tted earlier. The
bombs were tted into the bomb ba and onto
the wing pylons although in reality an aircraft
with this many panels removed for maintenance
would neer be armed. The last parts to add
to the underside were the carburettor intake
screens. The canop was remoed and the
inside polished read for nal ttin. The control
column, pilots seat and unsiht were added
and the cockpit canop was nall xed into
place with . The preiousl assembled
and painted propellers were given chips and
scratches with a silver Karismacolor pencil
and the same pencil was used to give the
impression of wear and tear on the metal
access panels and enine cowlins. xhaust
streaks were spraed on usin Tamia Smoke
followed b a touch of re at the exhaust
outlet. The entire model was now ien an
oerall coat of uneSano Matt Clear and
the canop maskin remoed. The 0.303in
machine un barrels, wintip lihts and cockpit
door were added leaving me with a couple
of small obs to do. One was the radio aerial,
which is different to the kitsupplied one, so a
0.5mm hole was drilled into the rear canop
fairing and into this a length of brass rod
painted black was pushtted. The nal piece of
this epic was to attach the windscreen wiper!

The Douglas B-18 was a pre-war bomber based on the
DC-1/DC-2/DC-3 airliner series, however because of
the frantic pace in development during the late 1930s
the type never achieved the fame of its airliner cousins.
Famous or not though, we are now lucky enough to get
one as an injected kit from Special Hobby.

I
f I had not been to the Air Force
Museum at Dayton, Ohio, some years
ago I would certainly not have heard
about this bomber. So when I did learn
that MPM Productions in their Special
Hobby range were preparing a 1:72 kit
of it I was very pleased. The first version
produced by Special Hobby is the B-18
operating within some Bombardment and
Reconnaissance squadrons of the U.S.
Army Air Corps in the pre-war period,
wearing an overall natural metal scheme.
I started this build by assembling the
wings because I felt there would be some
difficulties here. As this kit has been
designed around different versions of the
Bolo the upper engine cowling is made
as a separate piece. Depending of the
chosen aircraft you have to select one of
the different upper cowlings. In this case
it was the one with the engine manifold
running along the centre. The joint with the
upper wing is less than perfect so I had
to fill the gap with cyanoacrylate glue and
sand it back. Actually I repeated this three
times to get the perfect joint as this was
very important due to the natural metal
finish that I was going to apply. I was not
satisfied with the shape of the landing lights
so I made mine from a block of Plexiglass.
From pictures I took in the USAF Museum I
could see there were two lights on the port
wing and only one on the starboard, so I
made small holes at the back of the block
that I then filled with Humbrol Silver paint
with a touch of red for the small one on the
port side. I then painted the whole block in
matt black before cementing it in position
with cyanoacrylate. After 24 hours drying
I reshaped the leading edge starting with
some coarse sandpaper glued on to a piece
of plastic. After finer and finer sandpaper,
followed by Tamiya polishing compound I
got something that looked more convincing.
Having spent a good few hours with the
wings I then shifted my attention to the
cockpit. I started with the photo-etched
straps on the seats and various details

around the pilots. I added some styrene
blocks to the navigator's desk, modified the
control wheels according to some pictures
I found on the Internet and finally I glued
the transparent instrument film onto a white
background to highlight them before adding
the photo-etched facia on top. The metal
rudder pedals seem too wide but they wont
be seen once the model is built, anyway.
Before painting the interior I glued the
transparencies in place and I have to say
that they are not perfectly shaped for the
openings so I had to adjust them. I glued
them with a lot of cyanoacrylate cement
so that once dry I could sand everything
smooth as I had done with the leading edge
lights. I discovered that the cockpit interior
was covered with a sound proofing material
and all the seams were waterproofed, so
this means that the interior colours are not
as they are stated in the instruction sheet.
The cockpit walls should be a medium grey
colour whilst the floor is Bronze Green.
For these colours I chose Humbrol 165
(Medium Sea Grey) and White Ensign
US 30 (Bronze Green). Elsewhere in the
fuselage the colour was mainly natural
metal so I painted these areas with Alclad
II Duralumin. As I did not intend to open the
rear fuselage door I left that area empty,
although details for it are included in the
kit. It was now time to choose between
the different positions for the rear turret.
As I was going to put mine in the stowed
position I cut off the small lugs inside the
fuselage that were supposed to keep the
turret up. Next I closed the fuselage halves
with cyanoacrylate and left the whole thing
overnight to fully cure.
My next task was the engines and they are
nicely moulded but I added an ignition wire to
the front of each cylinder. After painting them
they were convincing enough for this scale so
they were put aside until the end of the build.
After a long period of sanding the fuselage
joints I glued the wings in place with extra-
thin cement, which I nd ies a stron bond.

Now the landing lights take shape but you still have to achieve a
high gloss nish with different (ner and ner) grades of sandpaper.
The nal stage was to use Tamiya polishing compound
Here is my own tool made of a very coarse piece of sandpaper
glued to a length of plastic
I was not satised with the joint around the upper cowlings so I
lled and sanded back once again. This stage is very important
when you are going to apply a natural metal nish

I work with a (large) magnier!
First I glued together the upper and lower wings. The upper
cowling is a separate piece to cope with the different versions
of the Bolo. As you can see there is still a small gap between
this and the upper wing. Thats the reason why I lled this with
cyanoacrylate
Here you see the cowling upper part glued into the upper wing.
I prefer using cyanoacrylate instead of putty because it is easier
to rescribe any panel lines removed by sanding as it is much
harder than putty once dry
These pieces of Plexiglass were easy to use as a landing light.
First I drilled small holes in the rear; the port one has two lights.
Later I painted these holes with silver and metallic red
When I saw a photo of the
B-18's cockpit I decided to
modify the control wheels

Here is the background of the instrument panel.
I painted a plastic back piece white and then
glued the transparent instruments over it. Next
I added the metal front part aligning the holes

leaving the kit parts as supplied
with a shortrun kit like this I had to ll each

of the sandin sessions I used two coats of
paint, rst brushin on a thick matt paint to
act as a er ne putt and next I airbrushed
on ne laers of lclad II uralumin to
hihliht an remainin scratches.

Plane Facts
On 14th uust 1934 the US rm ir Corps USC Materiel
iision at riht ield issued Circular 352 for a new bomber.
ith a crew of 4 to the new bomber should carr a ton of bombs
oer a distance of 2,200 miles 3,541km with a maximum speed
of 250mph 402km/h. oulas proposed the 1, which was
inuenced b their C1/C2/C3 airliner series. This new
bomber was to replace the Martin 10, but unlike the airliners
the new 1 had a midwin to leae room for a bomb ba. The
tpe had a bomb load of 4,000lb 1,1k with a maximum rane
of 1,000 miles 1,931km. The defensie armament consisted
of three 0.30in uns, one in a nose turret, one in a dorsal turret
and the last one in the entral hatch. The rst production ersion
was the 1 powered b the riht 12045 and 131 were
built some state 133. ext came the 1, which featured a
redesined and loner nose, improed bombaimers position
poweroperated dorsal turret. 217 of the 1 were built, of which
the rst 44 were oriinall ordered as 1s and 20 were used
b C and desined ib Mk I. 1s were 122 conerted
1s undertaken in 1939/40 with maritime radio euipment
and, in some cases, a tail cone extension housin submarine
detection euipment that allowed this ersion to undertake anti
submarine patrols until the end of 1943 alon the US, Caribbean
and anama shores. lthouh accepted as a bomber it should
be noted that the 1 was neer used as a bomber operationall
durin II, althouh it was to see serice not ust in the US and
Canada but also with the railian ir orce.

Once the fuselage was painted, mainly in
Duralumin with medium grey sidewalls, I
put this and the rear oor into place and the
fuselage was now ready to be assembled
The kit engines are nice, but I added some
lengths of tin wire to reproduce the ignition wire
for each cylinder
Once painted and with a dark wash applied
to add shadow, the end result is sufcient for
the scale
I discovered that the
cockpit interior was
covered with a sound
proong material and
all the seams were
waterproofed, so this
means that the interior
colours are not as
they are stated in the
instruction sheet

Aluminium. Next I painted the whole rudder
in Xtracolor X141 Gloss White FS 17875.
Over this when dry I masked and painted
on the red stripes of the American rudder
a usin umbrol 19. fter maskin
this I painted the remainin areas with
Insinia lue usin 122 S15044. The
last colour for the rudder was the satin
aluminium leadin ede and I was then
ready to apply the overall natural metal
nish to the aircraft. irst I airbrushed
some liht coats of lclad II uralumin, the
main adantae of this paint bein that it is
eas to put on numerous laers because
the are so ne that the do not build up
or create rides. To make differences
between panels I put some low tack notes
on the edes then applied a lihter shade
and because the paint dries uickl it was
easy and fast to paint the whole aircraft.
The second colour used was ModelMaster
1402 Stainless Steel, then once eerthin
was dr I prepared the black areas around
the leadin edes, on the inner part of
the enine cowlins and in front of the
windscreen. ctuall I used 505 Tre
lack, which is lihter than pure black and
better for this scale. Once I remoed all the
masks I was read to tackle addin all the
small components to m olo.
Final Details
The main landin ear is nicel detailed
but I added brake lines from lenths of

covered with Tamiya masking tape

PAINT & MARKINGS
To give some colour variations to the panels on the n I used pieces of low tack notes to act as masks

proper height of the rear gun turret I glued
some pieces of plastic at the base so that it
la on the rear oor in the fuselae. inall I
applied the decals, which are very thin and
conform well to the panel lines. Obviously
with the thin metallic paint it is a lot easier to
avoid silvering behind the transparent areas
between the black letters etc. I did not apply
any clear coat over the model as I felt it would
tarnish the metallic effect and I also believe
that there must be a difference in sheen
between the natural metal of the skin and the
painted markings.
KIT BUILD
FINAL VERDICT
This kit from Special Hobby is not suitable for the complete novice or inexperienced modeller, as its quality lays somewhere between short-
run and mainstream production. or the rest of us, thouh, there are few chances of buildin the tpe in 1:72 usin a mainstream inected
kit, so it has to be recommended. Other ersions hae now been produced since I started this build, includin the 1 and the ib Mk I,
which are ideal for those of ou that prefer aircraft in camouae.

A few months back I asked a number of our regular contributors to put together a
Top 10 of kits, the only criteria being that it contained only those kits that were
new since our launch back in 2005.
So, what did they vote for using a system that allocated 10 points for rst down
to 1 point for 10th, this would give a nal Top Ten for 200 to 2013 as follows

Revell 1:32 BAe Hawk T Mk 1 and 1A
The Revell 1:32 Hawk series was launched back in late 2010
and it sums up what is good about Revell products in that it offers
the basic essential components to make the type, with potential
to add as much detail, either from scratch or via the aftermarket,
that you like. The model was well moulded and nicely engineered
and went together without too many problems, and Alan Bottoms
stated in his review in Issue 76 that it was a great kit from the
box, which at less than twenty pounds is a bargain these days,
his only real problem was just how many could he justify building,
they were that appealing!
Hasegawa 1:32 Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Steve Evans built this one for us back in Issue 25,
August 2007 and although the whole series of 1:32
P-47Ds from Hasegawa are now pretty pricey here in the
UK (in 2007 they were 29.99, today they are 50+) Steve likes
the kit for the quality of moulding and simplicity of assembly. The
kit is not lled with the tpe of sublime detail which some ma call
gimmicks that you see from other manufacturers, you get nice
clean mouldins, ood detail and almost but not perfect t. In
summing up Steve said that Do you like the Thunderbolt? If you
do youll love this kit. Its easy to build, with good levels of details
and its as accurate in size and shape as Id ever want

Zoukei-Mura 1:32 Focke-Wulf Ta 152H
Zoukei-Mura was a new name that appeared on the market in
2010 with their Kyushu J7W1 Shinden and followed this up with
this superb 1:32 Ta 152H-1 in late 2010. Steve Evans built the
kit for us all in Issue 70, May 2011, so again lets use Steves
conclusion to tell you what this kit is all about This kit had me
stumped to begin with because after all the hype surrounding
it I was expecting some kind of ultra-high tech bit of plastic,
but in reality it looked kind of old fashioned. It may be a bit of a
throwback in the fact that it contains nothing but plastic (no etched
frets, rubber or resin) but thats actually part of its charm, because
it really is like getting back to your roots. It is well detailed, well
moulded and oes toether ne enouh if oure pain attention
to the parts alignment and it is easily the most accurate Ta 152 out
there in this scale. The only downside is the price and availability
but if you love the whole idea of a big old Monogram kit dragged
into the 21st Century to go to town on, then this is perfect.

Not really a surprise that this one is here, as many of us
have waited a long time for a decent mainstream injected
1:72 Tife and irx oblied in 2013 with their little beaut.
Libor built it all for us in Issue 98 and in summing up he stated
that In m opinion irx hae denitel left the eas kit label,
bringing to the market the best mainstream kit of the late mark
Typhoon in 1:72. Their concept of combining an attractive subject
at a lower price coupled with overall good quality and level of
detail makes it really tempting

Academy 1:72 Curtiss Helldiver
Academy have been making some nice kits for years, but back
in 2005 they started to raise the bar a bit with some new toolings
and their Helldiver was a good example. Our illustrious Editor
built the kit for us in Issue 12 (back in the days when he had
some spare time to make models!) and he stated that it was A
stunning kit, with good detail from the box, he also said Buy
one, buy a dozen, it is a lovely kit and well worth investing time
and effort in building
Eduard 1:32 Messerschmitt Bf 109E-series
Just about all the guys listed the Eduard 1:32 Bf
109Eseries in their Top Ten, so no surprise that it got
the No.5 slot. Steve Evans built it for us all in Issue 49, August
2009 and he stated that this is a great kit, even without the
magic of the etched frets, he also said that at that time its only
competition were the old Hasegawa and Matchbox kits and that
every one of the 30+ years plus years age difference shows in
every line and detail

Trumpeter 1:32 Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a
Trumpeter has to feature in any kit list for the last eight years, as they have progressively
upped their game. The Me 262 series kicked off in 2005 and ay built the Me 262A1a
version for us in Issue 5, December 2005. He had mixed feeling about the kit, as it had
some t issues due to the complex nature of certain aspects such as the engines, but
then again few, if any, kit manufacturers ever seem to be able to deal with Me 262s engine
nacelles! In summing up he stated that I like the look of the Me 262 and Trumpeter have
denitely captured it very well, and have also thankfully given the modeller the tools and
the means to open the model up and show some details without the need to resort to an
inordinate amount of scratchbuilding

Wingnut Wings 1:32 Airco D.H.2
A lot of our contributors liked the whole Wingnut Wings series, and it is true that they have become somewhat of an icon to todays
modellers, with a lot of people who would not otherwise touch a kit of an aircraft with two wings building them with relish. Scooping 19 points
overall and gaining 3rd position though was the D.H.2, which Andy Ieronymides built for us back in the August 2013 edition (Vol.9 Iss.97),
and his summing up is probably the best way to convey how good this, and all other Wingnut Wings kits are, Although rst impressions
would suggest a complex build, in reality the precision of the engineering ensures a straightforward path and, although the rigging might
seem daunting, this can also be safely negotiated with a little patience. This is another top kit from Wingnut Wings academy of excellence
and it is recommended on every level Need we say more!

Tamiya 1:32 North American
P-51 Mustang series
Scooping a massive 33 points from the contributors,
there is no denying that the Tamiya P-51 Mustang
series is a lesson in model engineering excellence.
Steve Evans built if for us back in the October 2011
edition (Vol 7 Iss.75) and found it to be a real joy to
build, although not one that would literally fall together.
His opening statement set the scene for what was to
follow when he said Tamiya have, just recently, taken
the big scale kit market by the scruff of the neck and
given it a damn good shaking. The punishment for all
the other kit manufacturers continues as they release
another masterpiece and his conclusion left you with
no doubt what he thought of the kit Tamiyas best
yet! No question, its even better than their amazing
Spitre and its lost the toylike quality of the original
Zero releases. The markings are good and the level
of detail, especially on the exterior, is nothing short
of astonishing. O, so theres plenty of scope for
adding masses of your own tubes, pipes, wires and
who knows what else to something in this scale but
out of the box it couldnt get any better. It may be a
little daunting to someone without much modelling
experience, purely because of the number of parts
but follow the excellent instructions and you wont go
wrong. or more experienced hands its a pleasure
from start to nish. Price will be an issue, of course,
but I can honestly say that if you only ever want one
P-51 Mustang in your collection, then this one is it!

Netting the biggest haul of the points from our contributors, with a whopping 42 points, the Tamiya Spitre series was the
outright winner. ust like their P51 series, the Spitres are superb examples of Tamiyas engineering art and although we
have never built the type within the pages of Model Airplane International, that was because ADH produced a complete book
on the type in their excellent How to build... series. Tamiya rst produced the Mk Ic (60319) in 2009, then offered the Mk
VIII (60320) in mid2010 and nally (to date), as a revision to the basic Mk I, the Mk VIe (60321) in early 2011. All of these
kits raised the bar as far as modellers expectations were concerned for 1:32 aircraft kits, and certainly did raise even Tamiyas efforts in
comparison with their earlier Zero series.

K, we all know how well the new Eduard Spitfire builds, as Dani showed
you all in Issues 97 and 98, well now Eduard have packed up no fewer
than two complete kits and combined them with resin and etched parts
along with a very special item to offer it in the very exclusive Royal Class
version. Inside the box you will find nine grey-coloured sprues and two
clear; the wing sprues are offered in three different styles, so you can make each Spit-
fire with s different configuration but not both the same. The resin (Brassin) parts in-
clude four- and five-spoke wheels, two resin slipper tanks and two sets of the Mk XXX
conversion, namely beer barrels under the wings. This last item ties in nicely with the
very special item in the kit, which is a glass beer/lager glass in Bohemian glass (what
else would you expect from a Czech company!). The set is completed with four frets of
photo-etched, one of which is pre-painted. You will also find die-cut self-adhesive masks
for the canopy and wheels, a beer mat and the beer mat game, but for more on that

his is another of Eduards excellent limited-edition specials, which combines the sound
Academy P-47D-25 kit parts with new resin and photo-etched detail components and
decals to show those P-47s operating over Europe in WWII. In the box therefore you get
all the Academy parts, comprising 126 grey-coloured and eight clear plastic compo-
nents, although a great many of these parts are not used in this version because they
are replaced with resin and/or photo-etched. On top of this you get a completely new cockpit
interior, a new set of wheels and a new propeller unit in resin plus all the various interior bits,
including pre-painted parts, for the interior. The kit retains the bombs, drop tanks (four versions)
and HVARs, although the latter are not used here, but of course if you want you can update these
with the new resin examples in the Brassin range: HVAR (#648 061), 250lb GP bombs (#648
086), 500lb GP bombs (#648 081) and M2 Browning machine-guns in either two (#648 077) or six
(#648 075) gun packs. Dont forget also that Eduard do an upgrade set of exterior photo-etched

ere you have a very limited-edition upgrade to the Academy F-15E kit via the
addition of the following: - Brassin exhaust nozzles, wheels (2 types) and
eection seats, plus a mass of photoetched, includin prepainted, paintin
masks for wheels and canopy and decals from Cartograf. The basic kit
comprises 282 parts moulded in a very dark grey-coloured plastic along with
four in clear plastic, albeit that a number of these parts are then replaced with the supplied
resin and etched upgrades. Unlike some others in this series, the upgrade parts are not
massive, probably because some much of it was already out there in etched from Eduard
anwa none of the etched fret in this kit hae preiousl been released thouh, the are
all new to suit and enhance the enclosed resin and/or update the airframe. If you want
to go still further, the sets already released by Eduard for the base Academy kit are as
follows: eection seat 49410, weapons 454, interior prepainted 49409 and
exterior 453 or 452.

Verdict: This always was a sound kit, with better

and a lot cheaper than the latter. Revell have not
bethered te remeve the Abeukir desert Iters frem
the sprues this time, which is a little extra added
value. Highly recommended to all RAF/FAA fans and
our thanks to Revell [UK Branch] for the
review sample.
