BURMA UPDATE
28 SEPTEMBER 2009
DAW AUNG SAN SU KYI’S LETTER TO SNR. GEN. THAN SHWE
OFFERED TO COOPERATE FOR REMOVAL OF SANCTIONS

Rangoon, 28 September

The detained opposition leader Daw Aung San Su Kyi’s letter to the Chairman of
the State Peace and Development Council ( SPDC ) Senior General Than Shwe by
which she pledged to cooperate with the SPDC for removal of sanctions imposed on
Burma was made public this afternoon by the Central Executive Committee ( CEC )
of the NLD.

In her letter dated September 25 this year to military junta chief Senior General
Than Shwe, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi revealed that she had verbally informed the
special branch police on September 12 this year her decision to work with the
military government for removal of the sanctions.

Daw Aung San Su Kyi in her letter then outlined the following three requirements
for effectively work for removal of the sanctions as follows:-

(A) To have the in-depth knowledge of all the sanctions imposed on Burma.
(B) To come to full grip with the extent of consequences suffered by Burma as a
result of sanctions.
(C) To firstly exert efforts to know the attitude and opinions of foreign
governments, which have imposed sanctions on Burma.

Daw Aung San Su Kyi’s letter then went on saying that in order to implement above
matters, she should be permitted to hold talks with

1. Charge d Affaires of United States of America to Burma,


2. Ambassador of European Union to Burma and
3. Australian Ambassador to Burma.

In addition, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in her letter requested the military government
to permit her to coordinate with the leadership of the NLD to get the consensus of
the party on the need for removal of the sanctions.
