TERM PLAN

SCIENCE 10
EVALUATION Science 10 will consist of three (3) distinct units, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each unit will last approximately 28 days after which there will be a major unit test. Reporting period 1 will represent only the first unit covered by students while the final years report will represent all three units equally weighted and averaged. As such your midterm mark represents only 1/3 of your final grade. Chemistry - 35 marks Ecology - 35 marks Physics - 35 marks Note an extra 5% is worked in as bonus for all students. PASS MARK FOR YEAR - 60% Tests - Marked out of 40 - 60 Quizzes - Marked out of 10 - 20 Labs - Marked out of 10 per individual Lab books - Marked out of 50 at year end only Research Assignments -Marked out of 10 -20 These items are ongoing and will become a part of each reporting period. 1. 2. 3. Tests - end of each chapter valued at 40-60 marks. Quizzes - may be given at any time with or without notice. Labs and Lab books There will be approximately 6-8 labs. All labs are due 1 week from the date completed after which a penalty of 10% per school day will be applied. Should school be cancelled on the due date the labs are then due the first day back. Lab books will be picked up at the end of the year and marked on the basis of neatness and completeness. These books are an ongoing assignment and should not be left for year end madness!!! 4. Research Assignments Assignments will be given to relate concepts studied to every day occurrences through use of internet and media. Study Tip Learning is an ongoing activity. Dont wait until the night before a test or some assignment to start your work. You should schedule a minimum of 15 - 20 minutes every night for the study of Science. If work has not been assigned in class, you have notes to study and a text to read as well as ongoing work on lab books and discussion papers. Dont put off til later what can be done today!!!! Extra Help I am available every night after school should you require extra help. Try to let me know in advance that youre coming in and come prepared. The more you focus the problem area, the better I can help. Dont wait til the last minute to get help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Science 10 p.2

Empirical vs. theoretical knowledge WHMIS Classification of matter Properties of matter Physical vs. chemical changes The periodic table Formation of ions (monatomic and polyatomic) Chemical nomenclature of ionic compounds

Biology Unit The ecology unit is meant to expose students to environmental issues in todays society. This will be dealt with through the following concepts. Sustainability Man vs. environment Extinction Diversity of life Terrestrial ecosystems Soil formation Logging Acid Rain Fresh water and marine ecosystems

Physics Unit The physics unit introduces students to basic skills required in scientific work. This will be dealt with through the following concepts. Accuracy and precision Metric prefixes Formula use Graphing Scientific notation Factor Label method Velocity constant, instantaneous, and average speed
