Beilein 2 guard
Set up

The first key is that the players have to be confident with the ball, aggressive and have a scorers mentality. This is not an offense for a passive team. This is a shooters offense. The second key to running the Michigan Two Guard offense effective is spacing. The motion may take time to learn, but without fail this offense needs proper spacing to be effective.

The point and trailor position are interchangeable as this offense can be run to either side. Like all other Princeton style offense they need to start high and stay high. The lower they get our cuts become crowded and bunched and less effective. The wings are interchangable. They need to be FT line extended outside the arc stretching the defense horizonally. The wings need to able to shoot and cut hard. The harder they cut the most respect will have to be given to cuts leaving them more open for shots. The point, the trailor and both wings will all play at one of the four spots throughout the offense each having ample opportunity to touch the ball and look to score. The post has to be well balanced and smart. They do not have to be a major scoring threat at the basket, but will need to have 15 foot range at the least to make X5 guard them. The post must be able to hit bodies on screens and be a good passer.

This is the area we want to take advantage of on every offensive possession. It must be the team's mindset to constantly attack and get to the paint by using our spacing and our aggressiveness to great looks.

Chin set

The "Chin" Series Chin Entry #1 Point to High Post We will start with the "Chin" series as our basic motion and shuffle series can fall back into it. 1 starts the offense by passing to the 5 at the top of the key. The 5 in this case is the first post down who runs the rim in the transistion break. (Not shown) If nothing materilizes the 5 flashes hard above the FT line. A phrase we use commonly to teach the mentality of the post flash is 'whoever says go, wins the race.' A post defender will never know the moment a post chooses to flash; giving the advantage to the offense. We teach our posts to flash on balance, knees bent, hands extended with the elbows outside the shoulders giving our 1 the best target possible, while also preventing the defender to tip the pass. Once 5 catches the pass, 1 and 4 SPRINT backdoor to the block. 5 looks for either 1 or 4. 2 and 3 fill the top spots.

If 1 and 4 are not available on the backdoor cut, 5 looks to pass to either 2 or 3. 4 and 1 fill the wing spots. In this example 5 passes to either 2 or 3. 2 reverses the ball through the 3 to the 4. If the ball comes directly to the 3, 3 passes to 4. The ball can go either way. 5 can pass to 3 who reverses the ball through the 2 to the 1. If the ball comes directly to the 2, 2 passes to 1. (Not shown) Both result in the same following action.

Beilein 2 guard
On 4's catch, 2 cuts hard off 5 on a direct line to the basket. 2 tries to cut as close to 5 as possible not leaving space for defender to follow. 4 looks for 2. The layup will be open early. If you have a guard that is good in the post, 4 can wait to see if 2 can gain position in the post.

We have three options that continually arise at this point in the offense. The first one is 5 sets a flare screen for 3. 3 can look to shoot the three or drive.

The second option usually happens after the defender has seen the flare screen several times and plays off 3. 4 passes to 3. 5 sets a high ball screen for 3. 3 drives hard looking for the layup, the kick to 1 or if 2 is still in the post a dish to the post.

Beilein 2 guard
The third option is to backdoor cut off 5. This is a great option is 2 is not a strong post player. If 2 is not open on the backdoor (diagram 3), 2 clears to corner. 3 cuts hard off 5, getting as close as possible to leave room for the defender. 4 looks for 3. If 3 is not open 3 clears to the corner.

This is where the pattern starts. 4 dribbles up to the point, 1 fills to the point. 4 passes to 1. 2 and 3 fills the wings. 5 resets to the nail.

1 swings the ball to the 3. 4 cuts hard off 5, not leaving any room for the defender to follow.

Beilein 2 guard
If 4 is not open, the three options start again. 5 sets a flare screen for the 1. 1 can look for the three or drive.

3 can pass to 1. 5 sets a high ball screen for 1. 1 drives hard looking for the lay up or the kick for the three.

If 3 can't get the ball to the 1 up top, 1 cuts backdoor hard off the 5. 3 looks for 1.

Beilein 2 guard
Here is the reset again. 3 dribbles up to fill the point, 2 fills the point. 1 and 4 fill the wings. 3 passes to 2. 5 resets to the nail.

2 swings the ball to the 1. 3 cuts hard off 5, not leaving any room for the defender to follow. 1 looks for 3. From here the pattern continues. The three options are there for the 2. 1. The flare screen from the 5. 2. The high ball screen from 5. 3. If denied hard backdoor cut off 5. From there 1 would dribble up to fill the point, 4 would fill the point. 1 would pass to 4. 2 and 3 fill the wings and the patteren continues.

Chin Entry #2 Point Reversal to Trailor Reversing the ball through the trailor is a good option if the 5 is denied in the high post, or if the trailor is open. 1 reverses the ball to the 4, who passes to the 3. 1 must time backdoor cut properly, not leaving until 3 gets the catch.

Beilein 2 guard
If 1 does not get the ball on the backdoor cuts, clears to corner. Again here are the three options. 5 can set a flare screen for 4. 4 can look to shoot or drive.

If 4 is not being deined, 3 passes to 4. 5 sets a high ball screen for 4. (big/big) 4 looks to drive hard or kick to 2 for the 3.

If 4 is denied, 4 cuts backdoor cuts hard off 5, not leaving any room for the defender to follow. 3 looks for 4. If 4 is not open, clears to corner.

Beilein 2 guard
If all three options do not present a scoring chance, 3 resets the offense. 3 dribble up to fill the point, 2 fills the point. 3 passes to 2. 1 and 4 fill the wings. 5 resets to the nail.

2 swings the ball to the 4. 3 cuts hard off 5, not leaving any room for a defender to follow. 4 looks for 3.

If 3 does not recieve the ball, clears to corner. Here are the three options again. 5 can set a flare screen for 2. 4 looks for 2. 2 can shoot the three or look to drive.

Beilein 2 guard
If 2 is not denied, 4 passes to 2. 5 sets a high ball screen for 2. 2 looks to drive or kick to 1 for the three.

If 2 is denied, 2 cuts hard off 5 not leaving any room for the defender to follow. 4 looks for 2. If 2 does not get the ball, clears to corner.

If all three options do not present a scoring chance, 4 resets the offense. 4 dribble up to fill the point, 1 fills the point. 4 passes to 1. 2 and 3 fill the wings. 5 resets to the nail.

2 resets the offense. 2 dribble up to fill the point, 3 fills the point. 2 passes to 3. 1 and 4 fill the wings. 5 resets to the nail.

3 swings the ball to the 4. 2 must not leave early for cut to be effective. It is always better to cut late then early. On 3's catch, 2 cuts hard off 5 not leaving room for the defender to follow. 3 looks for 2
