Catalog Description Consistent with National and State Standards and the Center for Teaching and Learning goals and objectives, this course is designed to provide students with an overview and understanding of the use of instructional technology in the K-12 classroom. The utilization and evaluation of various technologies and their appropriateness for the curriculum will be emphasized. Prerequisites: EFC 340 and admission to the Teacher Preparation Program. CS 101 or IT 101 recommended prior to enrollment. Course Purpose The major thrust of the teacher education program at Central Washington University is to prepare committed individuals as facilitators of learning for a diverse world. Consistent with this allencompassing purpose and with WAC 181-78A-270, the following minimum state standards are addressed: WAC 181-78A-270 1 a (vii) Planning and/or adapting curricula that are standards driven so students develop understanding and problem-solving expertise in the content area(s) using reading, written and oral communication, and technology; (viii) Preparing students to be responsible citizens for an environmentally sustainable, globally interconnected, and diverse society (x) Using technology that is effectively integrated to create technologically proficient learners. Each of the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) are addressed. Required Course Material Reading: no required text. Computers must have current levels of functionality; competence to use standard online and word processing features is assumed for a 400-level course. Mac users will need to save documents as a .doc, .docx or .rtf file extension in order to upload files on Canvas and LiveText. All assignments will be posted to Canvas and the Artifact will be submitted to Canvas. Check and respond to your CWU e-mail before each class session. Candidates must upload (do not cut and paste in textbox) the final Artifact to LiveText in the Professional Education Program Portfolio by the date given in order to be eligible to receive a passing grade in the course and avoid an Incomplete. Candidates are expected to do their own work; giving or taking assistance on assignments or exams in attempt to gain credit for work that is not your own is considered plagiarism or cheating. Academic resources used should be appropriately cited using APA format (see references below). Consequences may include a zero on the assignment, failing the course, and a recommendation for university disciplinary action. Candidates should use spell-check tools and proofread before submitting work. It is recommended that candidates needing assistance with writing research, style, or mechanics should make an appointment with the University Writing Center for assistance. Teachers are held to a higher standard of written communication. Call 509-963-1296/1270 for an appointment. Also available are grammar handouts and other writing resources at www.cwu.edu/~writingcenter All assignments must be word-processed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman standard black font, one-inch margins, unless otherwise stated. Use a centered, bolded heading with the title of assignment ONLY. APA format should be used for formatting and citations (see APA Guidelines in Course Documents and visit Owl at Purdue website). Save documents in Word (doc or docx) as the title of the assignment, and then upload it to Canvas. In the event of last minute technology issues ONLY assignments may be emailed to me by the due date, but candidates are still required to post to Canvas. Assignments are expected to be posted on Canvas by midnight of the due date. I may give notice that a hard copy may be required also or instead. Late assignments will receive a 10% point reduction per day up to 7 days and will not be accepted after that. Revisions for grades lower than a C may be discussed with me. Attendance and Participation: (20%) Candidates are expected to attend all class sessions and come prepared by having completed the assigned reading. This course emphasizes learning through group participation, in-class activities, and large and small group discussion; therefore attendance and punctuality are an essential component and a professional commitment to learning. In the event of an unforeseen absence, candidates are expected to contact me and/or classmates to discover what was missed. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a professional disposition. This includes but is not limited to: attendance, punctuality, preparedness, participation, non-disruptive classroom behavior, positive support of and respect for classmates, appropriate communication skills, written work completed accurately without plagiarism, and submitted on time. Use of a laptop or tablet is acceptable for course related activities and research. Texting during class is not acceptable; phones should be off and stowed. If you need to look up something for class, or there is an urgent need to use your phone, simply let me know or step out. Performance Indicators Below is a general description Specifics will be made available in a timely fashion and/or will appear on the class webpage. The assignments will likely require you to work outside of our class meeting time. You are encouraged to use the class lab when it is not being used for another class. In many cases, you may be able to use your own computer at home to complete your work. That is perfectly acceptable as long as the assignment is completed correctly, according to the directions provided. If you have a question about this, please let me know.
Written (typed) assignments that demonstrate mastery of word processing skills, as well as competence in the use of graphics and in the integration of various components of computer software Creation of a webpage, including links relevant to education sites Creation of a set of bookmarks on a social bookmarking site Discussion of current media which feature educational technology reviews, articles, and commentary Discussion of the impact of technology on educational practice Validation of the content of two websites using a variety of tools Class discussion and personal examples of instances where ethical concerns are -- or are not -- addressed properly. Problems such as inappropriate content on the Internet and ways to control access in the classroom will be discussed Creation of an activity (posted to a blog, and tied to the EALRs) in which students collaborate with children from other communities or cultures Practice using concept map software, such as Inspiration Creation of a rubric to evaluate learning management software (LMS) software Successful completion of a Skyward training session Creation of a poster explaining fair use guidelines regarding copyright for educators Completion of a webquery, submitting its URL to LiveText Creation of a professional growth plan related to technology

Finals Week According to University policy, Final Exam Weeks are a part of the academic year/university calendar days, as established in the catalog. Faculty and students are required to conform to the published final examination schedules. As a result, attendance is not optional. During Final Exam Week, a final examination or culminating experience is expected for each course taught as dictated by the nature of the course material and/or learner outcomes. All courses are required to follow the policy.

A grade of "A" for this course is awarded only for superior work throughout the quarter. This does not mean that the course content is overly difficult. It does mean that extra effort is required in order to achieve a top grade. The skills and concepts are taught in a manner that allows any student who is willing to invest the necessary time and effort to do very well, and to learn useful information and skills. In order to receive an "A", you should plan on going above and beyond the minimum requirements of each assignment. This includes content, as well as appearance. My philosophy is simple: "the bare minimum does not earn an A." Each assignment will have room for you to demonstrate mastery and excellence, and earn an "A". You are encouraged to go "above and beyond" the assignment description whenever possible.
