Nowadays,industrialrobotsareincreasinglyrecognizedasthedrivingforcebehindreductionsinfactorypersonnel.However,asiswellknown,theserobotsjust extend,contract,androtatetheirarmswithoutfacesorlegs,theydonotlookveryhuman.Theirdesignpolicyisclearlybasedonfunctionality.Fromthisstandpoint, therobotsmustperformfunctionssimilartothoseofhumanfactoryworkers,butwhethertheylooksimilardoesnotmatter.Thus,giventheirlackofresemblanceto humanbeings,ingeneral,peoplehardlyfeelanyaffinityforthem. 1Ifweplottheindustrialrobotonagraphofaffinityversushumanlikeness,itliesneartheoriginin Figure1.
