Testing foods for nutrients Task details

You are required to test food sample provided to you. You will work in groups but each one of you will write his own report. Task Duration In class component One double period for lab work Out of class component Two days to complete lab report. You will need: safety glasses test-tube rack 4 test tubes test-tube holder heatproof mat tongs candle matches glucose solution Benedicts solution starch solutions iodine solution gelatine solution 0.01M copper sulfate solution 1.00 M sodium hydroxide solution food samples (if solid, crush a small amount into a mash with water). For each of the tests below, set up the four test tubes as follows. After each test, clean the test tubes by rinsing with water. Copy and complete this table for recording the test results. Starch test Add two drops of iodine solution to each of the four test tubes. Observe any colour change and record the results. Glucose test Add four drops of Benedicts solution to each of the four test tubes. Gently heat each test tube over the candle flame. Observe any colour change and record results. Protein test Add ten drops of copper sulphate solution to each of the four test tubes. Then add five drops of sodium hydroxide solution to each test tube. Observe any colour change and record the results. Test result Water Glucose Starch Gelatine Test for glucose

Test for starch

Test for protein

Using the three tests above, investigate the food samples given to you for the presence of starch, glucose and protein.
