In order to agree or disagree with the recent claims on global warming, one must have
clear background knowledge of the term global warming. Allen and Delahunty (2002) define
global warming as the gradual increase in the earths atmospheric temperature, caused by an
increase in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.1 Change in earths atmospheric
temperatures, whether significant or small, is paramount in order for such to be considered as
global warming. This essay intends to explore in detail on the recent claims on global warming.
Anthony Lupo, a former expert reviewer for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change and an assistant professor of atmospheric science at the University of
Missouri at Columbia, recently published a report titled, Global warming is natural, not manmade. In his report, he argues that there is no credible evidence to support the argument that
global warming is man-made. He argues that climate change is a regional phenomenon and not a
global one. He continues to state that climate change has been experienced since the 1800s and
its occurrence is in the earths natural climatic boundaries.2 In his argument, he states that carbon
dioxide, the main component blamed on climate change is an already occurring gas in the
atmosphere that is fundamental in the continuance of plant life. He argues that the earths
atmosphere has seen a natural increase and decrease in atmospheric carbon dioxide percentage
over the years without human input.3
In his argument, he states that animal and plant life on earth has adapted to earths
climatic changes over the years. Scientific research has proved that life tends not to thrive in

colder climates as opposed to warmer ones. He also argues against the model projections that
state the earths atmospheric temperatures will continue to rise over time. According to Lupo, the
model projections do not include fundamental processes and interactions that are paramount in
the real atmosphere. In his arguments, he states that the projections are on the extreme and,
therefore, should not be considered.4 Lupos arguments raise fundamental points; lack of
concrete evidence to show that human activities accelerate the green house effect and that
climatic change occurs regionally rather that globally. I do concur with Lupo on his argument on
the following foundation; the earth continues to undergo natural changes and such changes also
affect its atmospheric temperatures. Therefore, the recent claims that climate change is
groundless are true.
In May 2010, the Academy of Sciences issued a report on climate change in the United
States. The report stated that the earths atmosphere was warming up. However, the report failed
to give any definitive human cause of such warming. Human activity was most likely cause of
rising atmospheric temperatures according to the report.5 The report failed to give any definitive
proof to show that human activity is responsible for the rising temperatures, in the earths
atmosphere. The report aimed at urging policy makers to put in place mechanisms to combat
rising atmospheric temperatures. While it cannot be argued against the fact atmospheric
temperatures are much higher that they were in the 1800s, the lack of concrete evidence to show

that human activity is the cause of such a rise in atmospheric temperature continues to show that
such a raise is occurring naturally.
The planet earth undergoes various changes as time passes. Such processes are natural
and not man-made. These natural processes ultimately change the earths surfaces, oceans and its
atmosphere and subsequent temperatures. The lack of scientific evidence that shows that human
activity is the cause of such a rise in atmospheric temperatures point towards a natural process.
Animal and plant life on earth continues to adapt to such natural process and thrive in the
resulting changes. The recent arguments on climate change are, therefore, groundless.
