FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 3, 2014 African-American Museum celebrates rich heritage of the Valley during Womens History Month
Local African-American women are honored for their exemplary contributions to the community. (Fresno, Calif.) Saturday, March 15 at 11:30 a.m. marks the Executive Directors AFRO Awards to honor local African-American women through the Valley, located at the African-American Historical & Cultural Museum. Womens History Month celebrates women of bravery, commitment and charisma dating back to March 1913, also known for the Womens Suffrage March. Unfortunately, African-American women were not supported in the push for equality which led them to face discrimination within the march itself. African-American women continued to strive for the same equality as white women and eventually broke barriers. In 2014, we continue to honor African-American women that continue rise to the occasion and reach out to their communities. The Executive Directors Aspiring Female Reaching Others (AFRO) Awards honors local women in the Valley who continue the legacy of Womens History Month. These honorees are the unsung heroes of the Valley who range from educators and professionals to community leaders and volunteers. I created this event to recognize women who have given back to the community in exemplary ways, said Executive Director Gregory Melancon. Honoring these women of character and commitment is crucial, especially in the hub of our community where we continue to make history for our future.
