Dear Selection Committee Members: I would like to fully endorse Tiana Dolson as a candidate for the Oregon TECH Leadership and Diversity Scholarship. Tiana is a student in my Health Services II class and has fully embraced the Avant Garde nature of this program. It is my ultimate goal to intellectually challenge students with thought provoking, controversial, and contemporary material. Tiana has embraced the critical thinking nature of the class with an open mind and genuine curiosity. The academic ability she possesses gives me great confidence that she will be able to handle the rigors of higher education. Tiana brings a unique set of gifts to higher education: she is an African American young woman, adopted into a white family at an early age, to parents whom did not get a chance to graduate from a higher education institution. While in high school, Tiana has demonstrate leadership, initiative, hard work, composure, respect, and a work ethic that sets her in the 1% of the current high school population. It is evident to me that Tiana seeks to develop a multi-faceted identity with her education at its foundation. Her involvement and motivation to graduate at the top of her class, to be a varsity athlete and a positive role model for African Americans, extensive hours dedicated to community service clearly indicate to me that she strives to become the most compassionate, empathetic, and team-oriented person. Tiana fully understands that a student entering University must be more than just grades on a transcript. This young woman brings to Oregon TECH multiculturalism enrichment to anyone whom shell interact with in the future. As her teacher, I am a first generation multilingual individual who crossed cultural, social and political boundaries as a first generation immigrant.
