3rd Quarter 2013-2014

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What we are doing this quarter:

Kindergarten This quarter we are working on an author study of author and illustrator Eric Carle. Our focus is on learning the different parts of a book; front and back covers, spine, call number and title page. Learning these basic components is important for future learning in the library! 1st Grade On March 12th our 1st graders will join with students across the state in reading Is Your Hair Made of Donuts? by Joy Feldman as a part of Eat Healthy RI 2014. Mayor Angel Taveras will be reading to us on this special day! To prepare, we are reading stories and learning about healthy eating. 2nd Grade We are delving into research this quarter! Students are working in groups to research a bird using books and online resources. Students will then use the information to make a presentation in the library and an informational poster in art class.

3rd, 4th and 5th Grades We are working on becoming independent learners in the library this quarter. We are refining our knowledge of using the online catalogue and finding books. We are learning to search by title, subject and author. We are also learning the basics of the Dewey Decimal system so that we can find the books we need in the library.

During Book Check-Out

Students in grades K-2 are learning and practicing how to find books that interest them. They are learning how to do this in a neat and orderly way. We are also beginning to learn how books are organized in the library. Students in grades 3-5 continue to use the catalogue for self check-out. Some students are also learning how to put books away in order on the shelves.
