Space Mission Project:

Planetary Profiles

Your Mission: You will be part of a team that determines which planet should be explored after a successful mission to the moon. Building on this foundation, your team must research a specific planet the project manager (Mrs. Black) assign to you and produce a document (essay) that provides the mission team with an accurate and complete conception of this celestial body. In this document, you will then take a position as to whether or not your planet/object should be the next to be explored, or at all. You must consider the global impact of such an exploration. The attached rubric provides the details of the document.

Explain how earthquakes result from forces inside Earth. Be able to answer the following questions: o How does stress affect rock? o How does movement along faults change Earths surface? o How does the energy from an earthquake travel through Earth? o What are the differences in the three types of seismic waves we discussed in class? o What are the differences in the epicenter and focus of an earthquake? o How do earthquakes cause damage and what kinds of damage do they cause? Be able to locate the epicenter of an earthquake using the process of triangulation. Understand the relationship between plate boundaries, stress, and the types of faults they cause. Be able to explain why it is difficult to predict earthquakes. Explain how seismic waves help scientists determine the internal structure of Earth.
