Part 1 List the appropriate standards (State or National Standards for Content, Technology or 21 Century Skills) and one or more related Verizon Thinkfinity learning object(s) aligned to the standards. st State or National Standards; 21 Century Skills Title and URL for Learning Object SS.11.H.CL8.4. Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese in 1941 Students will evaluate the causes and effects of acts of terrorism before and after 9/11. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroomThe 21 Century Skills is technology literacy and communication skills, critical thinking skills, and workplace productivity skills. The technology literacy will be learned from letting the students use the SMART Board when working with the Venn Diagram. They will also gain communication skills since they will be working in groups to gather ideas that will be put on the Venn Diagram. The activity will also help them gain critical thinking skills because they will have to think about how the attacks on Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are alike, different, and the same. The students will gain workplace productivity skills because they will be working in groups on the project before coming together as a class to share their ideas.

Part 2 Determine instructional elements - Integration A. Which type of learning object is this? B. Where will I use this learning object in the instructional cycle? Learning Object for Teacher Use Opening Motivational Activity Online (requires a computer) Central Focus of Lesson Plan Offline (no computer required) Research Tool for Students Closure Activity Learning Object for Student Use Assessment Tool Remediation Tool Online (requires a computer) Enrichment Tool Offline (no computer required)

C. Which instructional strategies will I employ? Direct instruction Indirect instruction Experiential learning Independent study Interactive instruction Other Notes: Visit http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/PD/instr/index.html for more information on the instructional strategies listed.

Notes: The lesson is entirely technology based. The Venn Diagram will be brought up on the SMART Board, and each student will have a turn to put their ideas on the Venn Diagram. They will be sorted into groups that I have chosen and will brainstorm ideas of how the attacks on Pearl Harbor and 9/11 were alike, different, or the same. Once they have had sufficient time to come up with ideas, they will put those ideas on the Venn Diagram. After all ideas have been put on the Venn Diagram, I will engage the class in a discussion as to why they think one circle has more ideas than another. After the Venn Diagram project has been completed, I will raise some other questions that the class will answer, either as a whole or by using the Venn Diagram once more.

Part 3 Plan for student success - Implementation A. How will I configure my classroom for the learning activity? Classroom Configuration: Computers not needed - printable resource Whole group instruction, using a projector and / or interactive white board Whole group activity, with small groups using mobile laptops simultaneously Small group, using classroom computers or mobile laptops as rotating stations One to one, using classroom computers or mobile laptops as rotating stations One to one, in a computer lab setting One to one, with individual student laptops Other Notes: Students will work in groups, but without using computers. They will then use the SMART Board to present their ideas to the class. After that, I will implement a class discussion on the things written on the Venn Diagram.

B. How will I manage implementation? Classroom Management: General computer rules / procedures Specific directions for activity Helping Hands Other Notes: Some students may not have any experience using the SMART Board, so I will give the class a demonstration on how to use it. I will then give the students general rules that they must follow when they take their turn with the SMART Board.

C. What additional considerations will support successful implementation? Software Hardware Supplemental Materials Other Notes: The SMART Board will support successful implementation because the students will gain technology literacy by using it. Also, the class will be able to see what other students have come up with in response to the questions ask. Then, they will be able to debate with their classmates about the answers placed in certain circles.

Part 4 Develop the student learning activity A. Learning Activity Description - What will my students do with the learning object(s)? My students will discuss different questions that deal with Pearl Harbor and 9/11. They will work in groups to answer these questions, and then put their answers/ ideas on a Venn Diagram using the SMART Board. The students will take the role of discussion leaders, while I will just guide them along the discussion. The questions that are to be answered are: (1) How are the attacks on Pearl Harbor and 9/11 different, alike, or both? (2) How did Americans perspectives on war and the need for war change? (3) How did the two Presidents react? and (4) How was the media coverage different? How will this learning activity support students development of 21st Century Learning and Innovation Skills (Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Communication and Collaboration)? The activity will support students development of 21 Century Learning and Innovation Skills because it will help them gain some technology literacy, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and workplace productivity skills. The students will work in groups which will help them gain communication and workplace productivity skills because most jobs require their employees to work in groups and to be able to communicate effectively. They will gain critical thinking skills because the four questions that will be asked require the students to compare and contrast the knowledge that has been learned. The technology literacy will be gained by using the SMART Board to share their ideas/answers with the class. How will this learning activity support students acquisition of current, accurate, and up -to-date information or reinforce concepts in core content areas? At the end of the lesson, students will have gained the ability to think critically, compare and contrast, work in groups, and have some knowledge about using SMART Boards. These skills will help students across the curriculum because they will be able to think critically in other subjects, and they will be able to compare and contrast other subjects that their teachers ask them too. They will also be able to work and communicate effectively in groups.

B. Differentiation - How will I modify the activity to meet the diverse needs of my students? I will modify the activity to meet the diverse needs of my students by passing out a Venn Diagram on paper, so that my exceptional students can write down their groups answers as they come up with them. I will also type up a Venn Diagram for each question and pass it out to all of the students so that they can see what answers I think should be in a certain circle for each of the questions asked. C. Effectiveness What indicators do I expect to see / hear from students, which will inform me about the effectiveness of the learning activity? I expect to hear my students agreeing and disagreeing with each other on their answers, and giving their own reasons as to why theyre agreeing or disagreeing. I also expect to hear them comparing and contrasting both events to reach the conclusions th ey are coming up with. I also want to see the students using their notes to help them answer the questions that have been asked, and taking new notes as they answer the questions. Part 5 Consider the bigger picture How does this learning activity fit within my lesson or unit plan? NOTE: Information about additional learning activities or materials that will be used to complement this learning activity may be included. This will be taught as a stand-alone lesson. It will review what the students have learned about the attacks on Pearl Harbor and help enforce what the students are learning about the attacks on 9/11. It will fit in with my lesson because the students will have a complete understanding of terrorism by having evaluated what America was like before 9/11 and after 9/11.
