Preparation: Prep: Before the bell, post the five rhythm cards equally throughout the room. Hook: 1. Teachers begin by layering a 3 part body percussion sequence. The sequence will be 3 parts of Its Time by Imagine Dragons. 2. While keeping a steady beat, each teacher will invite the students to follow and join in the chosen rhythm. This process is repeated for the two remaining teachers and their patterns. 3. Then teach 2 more patterns using the same sequence. The students have now learned a total of 5 beat patterns. Be sure to indicate that each pattern is a different element. Sequence: 1. 2. Teachers quickly post 5 rhythm cards spaced equally throughout the room. Students will divide equally into groups and stand at a rhythm card. a. Q: Everything weve worked on so far appears on one of these cards. Can you identify which pattern youre standing in front of? Talk to your group members, work it out, and be ready to perform it in one minute. How did you figure it out? Teachers start a steady beat and everyone performs their rhythm together. After 8 bars of performance, each group will shift one card to their left and repeat the process of discussion, practice, and performance, until they are back where they started. Start the pattern again, and fade in Its Time so students recognize their part and how it is represented in the recording. USE A METRONOME a. Q: Which instrument plays what pattern? How did you know that? Would this pattern be as effective if another instrument played it? Shift one group to the right and try the new pattern with the recording. Continue as time or attention spans allow. Reconvene: Q: What did you notice? Which rhythm was most difficult? Why? Where there any rhythms or elements that you noticed that were not represented? How could you recreate them?
