Preservice Learning Assessment

What in your family, background, personal sacrifice or engagement determined how you would rank the options? As a family, we are involved with our church. I have not always had religion in my life and feel I have a lot to learn about various religions and beliefs. I find this subject to be interesting and would like to learn more. I am returning to school to complete my degree in education because I feel it is a profession where I can make a difference in my community and our world. I want to be able to make a difference in my community, my country, and the world if possible and teaching and influencing children is the best way I feel I can accomplish this. I feel voting, local charities, and our environment are everyones responsibility. These have a major impact on our community for the present and the future and everyone should be educated about them. I find that I could be more effective in certain areas of the service options than in others. For example, I thinking making the community is not only voting but voting with an understanding of the views or the candidates however I dont necessarily want to work for a specific candidate.

Preservice Learning Assessment

Which items relate to advocacy? direct service? charity? or personal choices? My choices in rating these activities are primarily based on my personal choices and passions. I have a great passion for religion and children so I am naturally drawn to those options. I also think our community and country are important to our present and future. Having government officials in place to handle the issues and taking care of our environment and resources are key to a successful future. Providing assistance to our community charities will help to create unity and strength. When community members volunteer to help with community programs it not only gives them the opportunity to meet others in the community but to develop a better understanding of the issue that need attention.

Interviewee: Mike Wilson

Community Partner Interview (cont.)

O What project(s) or service(s) can students from Ivy

Tech create or help with for your organization? The students of Ivy Tech could help by providing their time to help with all aspects of the organization. As Mike Wilson stated, the sky is the limit on what students can do to help. Students could organize a toy drive or donation fundraiser, marketing and business students could help by advising on marketing plans, or providing more information to the Firemens Cheer Fund board about the legal aspect of non-profit organizations. Really any ideas and help would be accepted and considered.
Interviewee: Mike Wilson

Community Partner Interview (cont.)

community to know about your organization?

O Ask any other questions you would like to ask. What

new events are you planning this year? The Firemens Cheer Fund has a wide range of events going on this year. They use a varied of activities to raise money to continue their work. There are the following activities: Air Show 10/6/2013, Cheer Fund Challenge 5k/15K race 10/12/2013, Toy boxing 11/1/2013, Wrestling event 11/2/2013, Chili Cook-off 11/15/2013, and Delivery Day 12/14/2013. The United Way will begin registration for support on 10/26/2013 so the Firemens Cheer Fund will then be notified how many families they will be helping this year.

Interviewee: Mike Wilson

Community Partner Interview (cont.)

O What are your future plans? Building?

They are currently leasing their space from the United Way for $1 per year. The space is 10,000 square feet and allows for year round storage and a continued location for community involvement. They will be in space for 7 years and at that time they will need to determine what the next step will be. Ideally they would like to have their own building to house the organization.
Interviewee: Mike Wilson

Community Partner Interview (cont.)

O Anything new?

They have invited 2 high school students, one from North High School and one from East High School, to be on a special student advisory subcommittee to work with the board members. There are 15 board members, 10 firefighters and 5 civilian community members. They are always looking for community members who have non-profit experience to help support this organization as well as continued support from the other firefighters on the department.
Interviewee: Mike Wilson

Community Partner Interview (cont.)

O Can you tell me what the biggest challenges the

Cheer Fund faces each year? Obviously, a base of operations that is our own is something that we have been unable to obtain. Another challenge is obtaining quality used toys, toys are made cheaply these days and many are disposable after being used for a given period of time. Lastly, a challenge we face year after year is the challenge of recruiting firefighters to carry on the traditions of the cheer fund. This can be a challenge due to the large time commitment that is required of the co-chairmen.

Post-service Learning Assessment

O

Think back to your attitude about Service Learning prior to your experience. Did your experience change or confirm your attitude? Describe your experiences as you answer this question.

Going into this service learning project, I knew I liked helping and being part of the solution to solve our communitys problems. I like offering my help in any way it is needed. Being part of an organization that helps children during the holiday season helps to remind me what the holiday season is all about. I like giving to others and since I cannot help everyone in our community personally this is the best way for me to help. Cleaning toys, boxing toys for each family, labeling boxes, helping to distribute toys, and fundraising are all the areas I have helped with during my project. This project also helped me to be able to help in another way. I created a survey to help the organizers of the Cheer Fund collect data for gift giving to the 10-12 year olds. This whole experience has confirmed my love for my community, the Firemens Cheer Fund, and my desire to help others.

Post-service Learning Assessment

O

How is your service organization important to the people it serves? What changes would you suggest to the director or the Board of Directors? What was your role in the agencys delivery of services?

The Firemens Cheer Fund provides toys for families in our community during the holiday season. Once a family registers with the United Way and meets the requirements of the Cheer Fund, they are added to the list for toy distribution. The Cheer Fund provides new and used toys, books, and stocking stuffers for children from the age of 0 to 12 years old. I suggested they used a survey or questionnaire to help determine what the older aged childrens interests are. These are ages 1012 years old and they are typically the harder children to provide for due to their interests. The Cheer Fund is not able to provide electronics like DS 3D, TV, PS3, PSP, and other high cost items. So I created a survey and asked teachers of grades 4-6 grades at various schools in the community to have their students complete the survey. This can help give the organizers a better understanding of gift ideas for these children. I helped work at a 5K/15K run walk event and a chili cook-off event to raise money, sorted toys, boxed toys, created a survey, and collected data. I will continue my volunteering until the end of the season because they need the community volunteers to support the manning needed to make each year a success.

Post-service Learning Assessment

O

What was the best experience during your Service Learning project? What was the worst experience? How would you approach this project or another project differently next time?

I really enjoyed working at the chili cook-off and the charity run/walk. It is really great to see those in the community who are willing to donate to such a worthy cause. During the chili cook-off this year, I had a customer come to the chili cook-off just to purchase a t-shirt to help support the cause. She shared with me her story and how the Cheer Fund helped her and her family when she was a child. There is nothing better than hearing a success story! The worst experiences I have encountered while working with the Cheer Fund is hearing those who receive toys complain about them and not being grateful for all the work that went into the organization. I would continue to try to use my resources to help better serve the communitys needs.
