ESS AY QUESTIONS: Three of the following five questions will be on the test:
1. Many historians believe that the election of 1896 was the most critical election of the post–Civil
War years. Do you agree with this assessment? How did the election change American politics?

2. Why was Theodore Roosevelt so eager to have Dewey attack the Spanish fleet in the
Philippines, a move that certainly would not help in the liberation of Cuba? Furthermore, why
would the cautious McKinley ever approve such a move?

3. Discuss the U.S. policy on American troops serving in Europe during World War I. Why do you
think American commanders were hesitant to allow U.S. soldiers to serve in British and French
regiments? What effect did this policy have on America’s relations with the other Allied countries?

4. Discuss the US' Allied Expeditionary Force's effect on the outcome of WWI. Did American
fighting strength materially help in the Western Front?

5. Discuss Wilson's plans for the League of Nations. Do you think his plans would have worked to
bring about and enforce peace between the nations, or was it a “soap bubble dream”?
