Module 1: Groups I (14 hours) Sets and Binary Operations, Groups and Examples, Cyclic Groups and Groups of Permutations, Cosets and Lagranges Theorem, Normal Subgroups and Quotient groups, Homomorphisms, Isomorphisms and Automorphisms of groups. Homomorphism Theorems, Cayleys Theorem. Module 2: Groups II (14 hours) Group Actions and Linear Groups, Direct Products and Finite Abelian groups, Counting Principles and Sylows Theorems, Group Actions and Group Representations, Groups of Plane Isometries and Linear Groups. Module 3: Rings (14 hours) Integers and Rings, Integral Domains, Division Rings and Fields. Homomorphisms of Rings, Ideals and Quotient rings, Prime and Maximal Ideals, The Field of Quotient of an Integral Domain, Polynomial Rings and Euclidean Rings, Fermats and Eulers Theorems. Module 4: Fields (14 hours) Extension Fields, Algebraic Extensions, Transcendence of e, Roots of Polynomials, Geometric Constructions, Automorphisms of Fields, Splitting Fields and Separable Extensions, Elements of Galois Theory, Galois Groups over the Rationals and Illustrations.
