Renee Biertempfel

Renee Biertempfel is a graphic designer that has been in the art field for years and has a passion for fantasy art. She is a self-employed and created outstanding digital work that she says she enjoys herself. Her art has been influenced by many great artists who specialise in Art Nouveau. Artists like Alphonse Mucha, Lord Leighton, J.W Waterhouse etc.

Renee Biertem is known for her fantasy digital art such as this one. The picture here illustrates a mermaid struggling through a sea storm. The reason why I have chosen this picture is because is related to a myth. Mermaids have not yet been proven there existence therefore it can be classed as a myth. In research, mermaids have said to evolve as humans have. Researchers have said that Mermaids evolve by growing fins instead of legs. I like this certain illustration because it shows the fictional character beauty and the illusion that mermaids are real.

Looking at this image from a graphic point of view, I can look at the image and my imagination goes wild with possible stories to go with it. The reason why I have chosen this image is because of its fairy tale feel it has to it and the creative aspect of it. When I first looked at the picture I thought it was Robin Hood. Being a big fan of children stories I know that Robin Hood is maIe, but I could not relate this picture to any other stories. The outfit, especially the hood give it that uncharted feel to the picture. She has designed the outfit fit the area around her which is the forest. I would think of her to be the assassin of the forest because she has a sword and light armour. The way she stands on the rock/bolder makes her look mighty and strong which I feel would reflect on her character. To make this beautiful picture I can definitely see that Renee Biertempfel has done this digitally. Although she could of drawn the image herself and retouched it using editing software such as Photoshop. To be honest I also think she used a graphics pad because of the image is very detailed.

Neal Murren
Neal Murren is a Scottish graphic designer known for his fairy tale and fantasy art work. He also takes on other projects including the illustrative artwork and animations for clients such as James Palumbo. He graduated at Salford University and has worked with a various amount of materials and techniques such as pen, pencil, paint and Photoshop.

I have become a big fan of mix media pieces and the creative aspect of it. This piece crated by Neal Murren is a prime example of mix media as it combines photography and drawn art. This photo/drawing pictures a girl spearing to be standing along the seashore, almost like shes deciding towards the sea. The angle wing and tentacles of an/a animal all refer to different mythological creatures such as dragons, angles, giant fish etc. The surrounding of the photograph blend in with the drawings which make the whole image looks realistic. The girl is wearing a dress with a coat all with similar colours on it. Just like an angle, they are all dressed in the colour white. Therefore, I think she is being portrayed as an angle. The tentacles around her feet suggest that is part evil and part good. Overall the picture clearly states the well-known myths and the style of mix media Neal has used have complemented each other excellently.

Neal Murren has used the same style of mix media for this picture. Neal has made this image look like a fashion magazine article. I like the style of this picture because it relates to fashion. Neal Murren purposely made this to look like the cover for a fashion magazine. The clothes the girl is wearing relates to the background of the image. The background reminds me of a mystical forest see that there what seem to be tree vines with eyes on them to make the picture seem more sinister. The girl also has fairy wings, which all link back to the mystical forest. I believe that what the model is wearing is an interpretation of what fairies would wear if they wear humans. The outfit looks similar to what fairies wear. Overall I find this picture looks sinister but also creative and beautiful for its use of mystical forests and fairies.
