Game Play. Both teams line up on their sides quarter line. Each player may be holding a maximum of 2 snowballs at the start of play. At the signal, play begins. Game structure: -- A game consists of 3 periods, each lasting 3 minutes. After each round, teams switch sides of the court. -- Once a snowball has been thrown it cannot be reused. -- Once play begins, players can carry as many snowballs as they can hold in their hands. -- Snowballs can be stored behind barriers to be used later. The placement/role of each player is: -- Offense. Offense can play anywhere between the center and quarter line on their side of the court. Offense is not allowed to cross the quarter line on their side of the court, but they can advance to any area on the opponents side. Their primary role is to toss snowballs to eliminate opponents and/or capture the opponents flag. -- Defense. Defense can play the entire court. Their primary role is to carry, move, and roll snowballs (with their hands only) to their offense. Snowballs cannot be thrown to teammates. The bucket of snowballs cannot be moved from the back barrier. -- Both offense and defense work together to eliminate opponents and/or capture their flag. A player is out when: -- A player is hit with a snowball by an opponent. -- A player touches or crosses a side or end line. -- An offensive player touches or crosses the quarter line on their side of the court. -- A player hides or carries snowballs in their pinnie or clothing. -- 2 players hit each other with snowballs simultaneously, they are both out. -- Note: You can adjust the rules so if a player is not behind a barrier they are only out when hit with a ball below thewaist. A player is not out when: -- A player is hit when the whistle blows to end a round. -- A player is hit by a ball that rebounded off of an object first (another player, ground, flag, barrier, etc.). Capturing the flag: -- Players capture the opponents flag by crossing the center line and pulling it from its position. As soon as the flag pole is removed from the cone the flag is captured. -- No more than 3 players from 1 team can cross the center line into the opponents court at a time. A 4th player can cross only when 1 of the 3 players is called out or returns to their side of the court. Scoring. The first team to capture the opponents flag, to completely eliminate the opposing team, or to score the most points at the end of 3 periods wins. Points are scored when: Opponents flag is captured = 10 points. An entire team is eliminated = 10 points. When the round ends, each active player on each team = 1 point. A team has 4 players cross the center line = 10 points for opposing team. Options. Change teams after each round to involve the entire class quickly. The winner of the period stays in and a new team of 7joins the game. Rotate players on offense and defense each period. Thrown snowballs can be reused.
