PART B

1. RESTAURANT
A. Annotated Iterations of Preliminary Plans From the very beginning of the design I came to a few realizations concerning the way the restaurant would be sensibly laid out because of the features of the space.

I need to leave this exit available as an emergency exit and I found that having the bathrooms near the back was the best idea so that they wouldn't block any of the windows

I liked this door as the main entrance it was an odd shape and might be more difcult to place seating Initially I thought this might be where the bar would be located

It made sense for the kitchen to be in this back corner away from windows and close to the existing storage and loading area

At one point I thought there might be a better way for the bathrooms to be arranged, but I quickly realized the size the bathrooms needed to be wouldn't allow that to work.

11

The bathrooms t well over in this corner, but with further code review I m=noticed I didn't have enough.

At this point I still had the bar located on the southern wall. The shape wasn't working as well anymore, but I liked the angles.

12

I nally decided that the bar should along the serving aisle wall. I just hadn't gured out the back bar yet

The kitchen was still evolving I didn't like it completely yet. I was still missing an ofce and a janitors closet

By adding in these open booths I incorporated some more interesting seating and brought in a few more of the angles I wanted in the space.

B. FInal Concept i. Food and Atmosphere The restaurant at the Walden building will be a fun and casual place for diner. They will have drink specials of craft beers from the lower mainland and will be a big promoter of local breweries and events. Despite their specialization in craft beers they will have a food primary license because the tapas small plate menu will be an exciting casual west coast inspired menu for locals and dinners to experience and enjoy. The food will consist of seafood specials such as steamed clams and muscles, grilled salmon bruschetta and crab and shrimp cakes. Along with all this fresh and delicious seafood will be other classics such as spicy chicken wings, re grilled sliders and herb rubbed chicken skewers. The area around the Walden consists of many restaurants and one unique detail that applies to most of these dining establishments is the inclusion of a wide variety of vegetarian dishes. This is important for the area and I plan to have some as well like roasted Portobello mushroom sandwich, red and white quinoa salad and deep fried tofu. All the dishes served at the Walden will be fun unique and great for sharing. It won!t be open for lunch during the week because there isn!t much of a lunch crowd and limited ofces, but on the weekends will be open for lunch and dinner to feed those hungry shoppers.

ii. Concept Sketches and Images The concept for The Walden restaurant was drawn from the different colours of beers and the quirky warmth of craft beer posters and lables.

Host Stand

Beer testing sizes are a fun way for people to be exposed to the different local breweries that will be features. Wood slates behind host stand into the restaurant. Solid bulkhead and wall to divide the space, painted black. Front desk with back lite Walden restaurant sign in wood and metal.

15

For the materials and nishes of the space I would like to try and incorporate some eco friendly features such as the 111 chair that is made out of 111 recycled plastic bottles. For the wood details I would like to nd somewhere to get pine beetle wood.

2. RESIDENTIAL
A. Annotated Iterations of Preliminary Floor Plans The original concept from the very beginning was to create two story apartments. I thought that it would be easy enough to create a few layouts that could be easily mirrored from one side to the other. I soon discovered that it wasn't going to work and that all the apartments were not feasibly going to be able to be two storeys.

This was the original plan I was creating when I was considering making all the apartments two stories and still thought it was a feasible concept.

B. Residential Final Design Concept i. Concept images The residential levels have been planned to include nine one and two bedroom apartments with a laundry and larger storage space on the second oor. The apartments are each unique due to the space planning difculties this building has produced. They range from 985 square feet to 350 square feet. I plan to continue the rentals at 2 dollars a square foot. This will increase the rent on some of the units, but others have been reduced and will be more affordable. To create exibility and a more unique space, some of the units are two stories and have an open space on the second oor that can be used as an ofce, den or guest room.

The rental apartments at The Walden Building are a contemporary design with some traditional features to address the history of the building. Dark wood oors and white kitchen cabinetry will be an added interest. A clean contemporary design will appeal to the market and will make the rentals a more desirable space then it currently is. Eclectic touches such as interesting built in storage will also add to the character.
