Travis Nykaza Professor Reilly 2/16/2014 Intro to ELL Basic Classroom Plan

The letter did not explicitly state the age level or subject area of the student; however, it seems the student is either in late high school or college. The student is studying in France and gender should not have such a profound difference in how the student is treated and should be similar to many western democracies. Movement is being moved from the stay-at-home mother to one who most not only consider their household duties but their job as well. Men as usually considered the main breadwinners of the family I guess, as a teacher, it would be important to research some aspects of the students culture, specifically, their attitude toward authority figures and their peers. I also would try to learn the popular methods of instruction in their country of origin. It depends on the subject area and no subject area was specified, but I would say that for math and science content knowledge would be the same. Literature and history would probably be much different. For differentiation I would provide the student with guided notes with plenty of pictures and simplified language. I would also attempt to enunciate more and emphasize pronunciation of words. Technology would also be used to aid the students learning. I could even provide the students to learning materials in their native language on Khan Academy depending on the subject.

I believe visual learning materials would be most effective especially if used with constant conversation. The student should be practicing their speech as often as possible and should be forging connections with their native tongue. I do not believe, for the most part, I would need to use different classroom management techniques. I feel that the student will be so culture shocked and anxious that their problem behavior will not occur often. I feel that it would be more important to encourage them to participate more in class and help them adapt to their new environment. My learning expectations for the student would vary depending on the subject. Math I feel would be, at least in terms of language, the easiest to communicate Assuming their use the same number system as us which most of the world does. As for other subjects, initially I would aim for the student to get comfortable in their new environment and acquire a functional knowledge and grasp of their new language. Eventually I would expect them to learn but not quite as much as my native students. I will assume I am teaching an English Language Arts classroom where I must make accommodations for my ELL student, Emily. If we were doing a unit on a short story or novel I would try to acquire a translation in Emilys native language. She would also be provided one in French so she could compare the two and hopefully gain some understanding of our language. If the lesson were an introduction to a particular novel I would continue teaching the class as normal but I may modify my powerpoint to include more images and graphic organizers. I would also spend time locating foreign language resources for the particular novel we are reading. Finally, I would assess the student similarly to other students but I would add an english comprehension component to the

ELL students assessment to see if they are making progress in our language.
