Can the student explain basic ideas of Native Americans? Curriculum Standard: PA Common Core: CC.1.2.3.A: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.

Lesson Objective: The student will be able to explain and analyze basic ideas about the world that most Native Americans still share and traditions of Native Americans by completing the lesson worksheet provided with 80% accuracy?

Lesson Assessment: Formative Assessment: The teacher will assess the students ability to explain and analyze basic ideas about Native Americans and traditions by observation and collecting and grading the lesson worksheet.

Vocabulary: Adapt- to change in order to fit new conditions Ancestor- a person from whom one is descended Legend- a story that is handed down among a people through the years

Materials and Resources: Pencil Textbook (Chapter 7, Lesson 1) Markers Teacher made PowerPoint with pictures and traditions of Native Americans

Teachertube video on Native Americans Lesson worksheet from Communities Around Us Lesson Review Book chart paper

Anticipatory Set: On chart paper, create a KWL chart with the class on Native Americans. Have students share what they know and what they would like to learn about Native Americans.

Procedures: 1. Anticipatory set 2. Show the PowerPoint to the students and have a discussion about what they notice a. How they dressed b. How they lived c. What traditions they had d. What resources they used 3. Read Lesson 1 in the textbook. After each section in the lesson, stop to talk about key ideas and any vocabulary in that section 4. Show the students the video from Teachertube. Discuss the video and what they noticed about Native Americans and their way of life. (Talk about the same things as we did after the PowerPoint presentation) 5. Pass out and explain lesson worksheet 6. When students have completed the worksheet, turn in to the teacher to check for comprehension 7. Closure

Adaptations: 1. Adam- Extra prompting for participation. Incorporate his ideas into the lesson in order to get him to participate. (Adam, what do you think?) 2. Adam- Allow for socialization opportunities. (Suggestions: work with a partner, turn and talk, etc.) 3. Read lesson worksheet to Jacob if needed 4. Use of visuals to reinforce lesson objective

5. Michael, Jacob, and Adam can have extra time to complete the worksheet 6. Write directions on the board

Closure: 1. Fill in what students learned section on KWL chart, but keep this chart for the remainder of Chapter 7 to fill in this section. 2. Turn and Talk: Have students talk with a partner about something interesting that they learned today about Native Americans.
