Traditional Curriculum

Progressive Curriculum

According to Mrs. Cristobal, traditional curriculum are the learning areas for regular pupils where it is a list of subject/ subject matter that the teachers prepares for their pupils to learn. For the special children, traditional is used when the pupils are already mainstreamed in the regular setting. SIMILARITIES The two curriculums are both used to teach children with disabilities that encompasses all the educative experiences to meet the diverse needs of pupils.

For the special children, progressive curriculum is the first curriculum used by teachers in teaching the child with disabilities because these are additional modified curriculum. According to Mrs. Cristobal, the first thing that they must do is to know the different level of children according to their capabilities, age and etc. for them to know what skills must be taught to the children. Because progressive curriculum is like special curriculum for the special children.

My Personal Insights:

Theres a gap between the traditional curriculums compared to the progressive curriculum. In progressive curriculum there is quality of education- teachers are more globally competent. The pupils in progressive curriculum are eager to learn while in traditional, they are passive absorbers of information and authority.

My Personal Insights:

In every subject, these curricula must be presented, the recommended curricula are the curriculum recommended by the Department of Education, written curricula are the lesson planned that will vary depending on the preference, subject being covered, and the need and curiosity of every students, implemented by the teacher are called taught curricula, assessing and evaluating your pupils is one way to test whether they understand your lesson or not, you can do it by activities or pencil-paper test, what the students learned that is the learned curricula it focuses on the learners and the hidden curricula are the unplanned lesson for the day.

My Analysis
1. Why do we need to consider the traditional and progressive points of view of curriculum? Traditional point of view is just merely saying on the body of subjects or subject matter prepared by the teachers for the learners. On the other hand, progressive point of view opposed the beliefs of the traditional. It adhered to latest definition which is the totality learning experiences of the learners. As a teacher, we can choose what kind of teacher we want to be. We cannot say that two points of view are not good whether old or new. Old one has been tested for many years so we can say traditional one is also good while new one can be said as adhering to the change. So, we can combine these two points of view by choosing what the best for our learners. These curriculums go hand in hand and complement each other. These two curriculum have divine role in education.

2. How do the different educational philosophies relate to the curriculum in the schools you visited? Cite examples/ situations? In the A. P Santos Elementary School, the different educational philosophies are used as springboard in teaching pupils with special needs, and they are really related to curriculum because they firmly believe that these philosophies has important role that can heavily influenced curriculum especially in their SPED class, pupils are actively involved in developing curriculum.

3. Why is there a need to revise the curriculum from time to time? In the A. P Santos Elementary School, especially in their SPED class, pupils are actively involved when there is a need for modification and development of curriculum because programs for individuals with mild, moderate or severe handicaps must be comprehensive and the prominent goal is to meet the diverse needs of pupils. So, the answer is yes, there is a need to revise the curriculum from

time to time, because every year, different pupils are enrolling according to Mrs. Cristobal, SPED teacher.

My Reflection / My Insights April Jane P. Ramos

Base on the ideas and experiences that Mrs. Cristobal shared to us, Ive learned that the education of children with disabilities is totally different. You as the teacher must take the responsibility to offer your pupils a balanced program which will emphasize their abilities instead of disabilities with the help of the school as well. The curriculum should be responsive to the needs of the individual pupils at the current point of time and it must be reflective for the need for balance between maximum interaction with non- handicapped peers and attention to critical curriculum needs. The SPED teacher should likewise consider the important like for the childrens maximum participation in the regular and self- contained setting.

My Reflection / My Insights Dave R. Pagdilao

Curriculum is the basement of learning where teachers and learners combined knowledge and ideas for better insights. Mrs. Cristobal shared her insights about the curriculum that she is using. She said that curriculum in special education is different in regular school because in special education as a teacher you should integrate learning that can suited to the disability of the child/children. It should be more basic than others so that children with disabilities will know first basic skills like basic grooming, the used of the things around us and household chores basically. As a future teacher, I should also integrate learning and ideas to practice effective skills especially in the field of special education. I should also widen their knowledge in environment relevant to the curriculum through experiential learning. Because I believe that a child can learn more effectively and naturally if he/she will exposed to the natural-environmental friendly society. Lastly, I should innovate ideas and insightful strategies.

My Reflection / My Insights Minerva R. Agustin

Curriculum is sometimes characterized as fragmentary, elusive and confusing. There is such diverse definition of what is curriculum is all about. Based on to what Mrs. Cristobal shared to us about her ideas, thoughts, and experiences, Ive learned that education for children with exceptionalities is very different to the regular school. Their curriculum must be responsive to suit the needs of the children with special needs. And according to their different exceptionalities of the learners, the different educational philosophies are used as a springboard net to teach them. She said that the first to be implented to the children with special needs is by teaching them the basic skills for their daily living skills such as grooming, cooking, and other things that is used around as basically. As a future SPED educator, I should equipped the curriculum to be plan what is suited for my learners that can be reflect to his/ her daily living and as well to the worth of education. I should also be resourcefulness enough and have integrated skills to provide the needs of the children with special needs. I believe that every learner is unique and have the capacity to learn. My goal for my learners who have disabilities is that to teach them how to live independently and to become a whole rounded individual.

My Reflection / My Insights Eloise D. Pacol

A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart. On these episode we have a chance to visited again A.P. Santos Elementary School. Based from my experienced, I learned a lot from this episode because I was able to appreciate what was the traditional and progressive point of view in education and to difference it. And how can help me to become a good teacher in the future, especially my specialization is Special Education. I have now better understanding of how to apply the progressive curriculum to the special learners, to meet their needs and how to revise them to make it effective. I realized that as a SPED teacher you need a lot of patience. If you love what youre doing then you are not frustrated on your chosen job.

The opposite of a progressive school. One that focuses more on obedience, studying and tests then on hands on experimental type learning. In a traditional school it is a preparation for life. Learners in a traditional school are passive absorbers of information and authority. Learning is linear, with factual accumulation and skill mastery. Knowledge is absorbed through lectures, worksheets and texts. And teachers in the traditional school are sources of information and authority.

In a progressive school it is a part of life. Learners in a progressive school are active participants, problem solvers and planners. Learning is spiral, with depth and breadth as goals. Knowledge is constructed through play, direct experience and social interaction. And teachers in progressive school are facilitators, guides who foster thinking.
