The mission of the Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program is to ensure the long-term musical and social success of all

students at our school, and to positively impact our student-musicians, their families, and the community through quality education and performance. www.jqsop.org
The Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan curriculum that uses music education as a vehicle for social change. Through the creation of a fun and nurturing musical environment, students learn valuable social skills, including perseverance, responsibility, and teamwork. We are now in our third year and our program provides over seven hours of orchestral and general music instruction per week to 100 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. All instruction takes place before the school day begins, giving each child an enjoyable and engaging jump-start to his or her day. Our JQOP student musicians perform regularly in the community, attend performances by professional orchestras, and work collaboratively with other youth orchestras and El Sistema-inspired programs around Boston. In June 2022, the first class of JQOP student musicians will graduate high school, having played together as an orchestra, within a caring community, for eleven years. The JQ Orchestra Program is fortunate to have a builtin feeder system for students, as every child who completes fifth grade at the Josiah Quincy Elementary School is automatically enrolled at the Josiah Quincy Upper School (grades 6-12), located just three blocks away. In the 2015-2016 school year, our oldest group of students will begin 6th grade at JQUS and we will start our first year of expansion of JQOP into the JQ Upper School creating a 13-year feeder system of life-changing music instruction (Kindergarten-12th grade). Our vision is to form a musical family whereby middle and high school student-musicians work as the teaching artists and mentors for the elementary school orchestras, gaining confidence and leadership skills along the way.

*** The Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program is a program of Josiah Quincy Elementary School in Bostons Chinatown neighborhood. We wish to give great thanks to JQES Principal Simon Ho for his continued support and dedication to our program and to increasing quality arts education and access to all students. His dream, along with the hard work of former program director and co-founder, Graciela Briceno, began it all in 2011. Now in year three, we continue to work hard and strive to create better futures for all of our students through music for years to come. As we continue to grow and expand, our JQOP mission remains constantWhile maintaining a high level of musical excellence, our number one goal includes our commitment to the social success of our students and their families as leaders in our community.
