AMIGOS YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF HOUSTON

Music education for at-risk youth inspired by El Sistema January 21st, 2014

Mission
Amigos Youth Orchestra of Houston (AYOH) provides students with rigorous, ensemble driven music training in order to foster in them the skills necessary for successful futures. By holding children to high expectations and affording them joyful, musical experiences, AYOH inspires them to develop the character and personal voice needed to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Vision

AYOH will have a resounding impact on its immediate community as well as Houstons at-large underserved student population

APV will serve as AYOHs flagship site, providing a new model of youth engagement through music education

Students will develop deep understanding of social mindfulness and teamwork. As versatile musicians, students will be confortable performing works from the classic canon and beyond, including music honoring students ethnic heritages.

Amigos Por Vida will become an ambassador for excellence through musical achievement, eventually allowing AYOH to expand to encompass a large network of primary, secondary, and high schools

Pilot Program
When: 2014-2015

Who: Grades 3 and 4


What: 2 hours daily after school programming. Class offerings to
include:
Chorus Orchestra String instrumental classes (violin, viola, cello)

Musical language theory classes (held during school in ancillary periods).

About Program Leadership


The program will be led by an Executive-Artistic Director with responsibilities divided as follows:

Teaching 25% Curriculum/Artistic Planning: 20% Managing Logistics: 20% Fundraising: 20% Marketing: 10% Program Evaluation: 5%

Partnership with University of St. Thomas


A partnership with University of St. Thomas will provide AYOH wonderful resource opportunities such as:

Performance space: Cullen Hall Student collaborations: AYOH students will perform with
UST school preparatory students.

Teachers performances: Opportunity to feature AYOH


teachers in UST recital series.

Piano donation: UST to provide AYOH a piano Help in recruitment of volunteers
