out 50): Aluminum foil Pennies Empty egg cartons Tape Construction paper Styrofoam cups or dixie cups Small white board (to record predictions and results) Dry erase marker Standards: Illinois Learning Standards Goal 11: Inquiry and Design 11.A.1c Collect data for investigations using measuring instruments and technologies. 11.A.1d Record and store data using available technologies. 11.A.1f Compare observations of individual and group results. 11.B.1b Design a device that will be useful in solving the problem. 11.B.1c Build the device using the materials and tools provided. 11.B.1e Report the design of the device, the test process and the results in solving a given problem. Overview of Lesson: The children are going to be able to build their own boats out of various materials. Well give them about 7-8 minutes to build them. After, well have each child predict how many pennies their boat will hold before (if it does) sink. We will have the children tally how many pennies their boat holds. After, well look at everyones results and see whos boat held the most pennies. We will look at the child whose boat held the most pennies and figure out why it held the most. Objectives Students will be able to predict how many pennies their boats will hold Students will be able to make comparisons regarding their predictions and their results. Students will discuss how or why their predictions did or did not align with their end results. Procedures: Introduction (3 minutes) Show students a demonstration of the activity. Have a boat pre-made, set

into tub of water, place on or two pennies into boat to test the boat. Predictions, Building, and Testing (9 minutes) Present the different materials available for making their boat. Allot time for students to construct their boats - working in pairs. After building boats, collect predictions from each student about how many pennies they think will sit in their boat before sinking. Predictions will be recorded on the whiteboard. Students set boats into the tub of water. Students will slowly place pennies into their boats, one by one. When boat sinks, their pennies will be counted up. Concluding Discussion (2 minutes) Write down the number of pennies their boats held next to their predictions. Prompt students for discussion: How many pennies did your boat hold? Was this what you predicted? Why was it different? Why do you think this boat hold more than this boat?
