STANDARD: (PA Common Core):

PDESAS Science 3.2.1.A1: Observe and describe the properties of liquids and solids. Investigate what happens when solids are mixed with water and other liquids are mixed with water. PDESAS Science 3.2.1.A3: Identify how heating, melting, cooling, etc., may cause changes in properties of materials. PDESAS Science 3.2.1.A4: Observe and describe what happens when substances are heated or cooled. Distinguish between changes that are reversible (melting, freezing) and not reversible (e.g. baking a cake, burning fuel). PDESAS Science 3.2.1.A5: CONSTANCY AND CHANGE Recognize that everything is made of matter. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes) Students will be able to demonstrate their level of understanding of the above standards through a summative assessment, II. Instructional Materials -Summative Assessment -Ice cubes -Colorful cups -Five medium sized colorful buckets III. Subject Matter/ Content Prerequisite skills -Basic test taking skills Key Vocabulary -There is no new key vocabulary in this lesson. Big Idea We learned so much about matter, now it is time to show what we know! IV. Implementation A. Introduction 1. For the past two weeks, we've been learning a lot about matter! Today we are going to play a review and then you are going to do a "Show me what you know." B. Development 1. Explain the rules of the game: Each of you will have an ice cube in one of these cups. It does not matter if your ice cube melts, and you have to leave it sit right on your name tag until you are allowed to do something with it. Each of your groups is on a team. The first team to get all of their ice cubes into their bucket up here will win. I will go around the room and call on one person from each group each turn. They will get a question. If they get it right, they get to come up to the front of the room and pour their ice cube or melted ice cube in. * The questions come straight from the summative assessment. Mix them up and ask them. If you need more questions to finish the game, ask "Is it a solid, liquid, or a gas?" classification questions.

C. Closure 1. Give summative assessment. The test will be read aloud question by question to ensure that the test is not invalidated by a student being unable to read the test. D. Accommodations / Differentiation -The test will be read aloud to all students. -Students who have additional difficulties may have questions re-worded for them. -Students may work ahead and then read if they feel confident with their reading abilities. -Students will have the time they need for each question. E. Assessment/Evaluation plan 1. Formative- There is no formative evaluation for this lesson. 2. Summative- The summative assessment consists of a multiple choice exam. It will be collected. Results will be analyzed collectively and individually for error patterns. V. Reflective Response A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of States Objectives B. Personal Reflection 1. Did the game run smoothly and effectively? Did students seem to enjoy it? 2. How was my pacing with the test?
