What are some of your cultural practices?

We are catholics so we go to church. We are also very superstitious. I am Catholic, I pray every day for what I am thankful for. Im catholic. I pray to Jesus. Why did you move here to Hawaii? I was born in Hawaii. I was born here in HawaiI many years ago. I was born here actually 3. If you didnt move here who from your family did? Many years ago my grandparents moved here for work. My family came here looking for work when I wasnt even born yet. 4. Do you still use your language daily?

No, I personally dont know how to speak it but I remember growing up and listening to my parents speak it. I do, I could speak it fluently when I was younger but couldnt use it very often since no one else spoke it. But I use it in my daily life. Of course, I talk to my family in Filipino all the time. 5. What was it like growing up?

IT was fine, the language barrier was hard since I spoke mostly Filipino and very little English. Difficult for me, I barely spoke English and hard to force myself to learn it for school. Eventually I did and now I speak it everyday. 6. What religion are you?

Catholics. I am Catholic. Catholic 7. What kind of foods do you enjoy eating/making I enjoy eating Filipino foods, my favorite is adobo. I also My favorite things are Filipino desserts, especially Biko and Halohalo. I love eating and making Filipino desserts, it reminds me of when my grandma would make them for me when I was little. 8. What kinds of games do you enjoy playing

When I was younger I loved playing hand games with these Filipino songs to go with them. When I was little I enjoyed playing hop scotch and jump rope. 9. Did your ethnicity affect you in any way? Not at all while I was growing up. Besides the funny Filipino stereotypes it hasnt affected me. Not much, only the language problems. Not really.. I was the same color as everyone else so it was fine for me. 10. Are you superstitious?

Not really, but I remember when it came to chicken fighting my family got really superstitious. Oh yes, I am very superstitious. I was raised with my mother and grandmother telling me what and what not to do or ill have a consequence. Of course, it is in Filipino blood to be superstitious. I have always been that way for as long as I could remember. 11. What are you superstitious about?

Many things. Like never play with spiders or youll have a hard time sleeping and never open umbrellas inside your house because its bad luck. Everything! Like never wear a necklace when youre pregnant or your baby will copy you and die.

12. Why do you think our culture is superstitious? I think were supersticious because its in our blood, we were always this way for as long as I know. I am not sure, I guess we were just made that way. Probably because were so observant. 13. Did you ever go to the Philippines?

No, but I wouldnt mind going. Yes I went there with my aunty and my mom a long time ago for a visit. Yes, but I was very young and I dont remember much. 14. Why do you think a lot of Filipinos came here? Work on the sugarcane fields. For work, there wasnt much in the Philippines. To find work, work was impossible to find in the Phillippines. 15. Did your family members come here for the sugarcane plantations? Yes, I believe my great great grand parents came here for work from the Philippines Yes my grandfather. Yes.

16. What part of the Philippines did we come from? I am not sure. No idea 17. Would you ever like to go to the Philippines? Of course, it has always been a dream of mines. I went but I would love to go back again. I would love to visit again, the food was great. 18. Are you Filipino from your mom or your dad? Both? Both, mostly dad though. Both my parents. Both. 19. Did Filipinos make a big impact here in Hawaii? I believe so, we came here for work and ended up sharing our culture with others. I think we did, we shared food and our knowledge, just as the Japanese did with us. Of course, our lives are very mixed with different cultures. 20. Did it make Hawaii better or worse?

I think it somehow improved Hawaii.

I made Hawaii better in my opinion. A lot better.
