ABSTRACT

The challenge of carrier recovery for digitally phase modulated, suppressed-carrier signals has been the target of much attention in digital receiver system design for many years. In this work a carrier recovery circuit using Costas loop for BPSK detector is designed. The Costas loop presented in this work can sense both 0 and 180 phases at its input. Thus the Costas loop carrier recovery circuit overcomes the 180 phase ambiguity presented by the conventional PLL. The designed BPSK detector consists of multiplier phase detector, low pass filter, second order loop filter and Voltage Controlled Oscillator. The work presents a design of digital signal processing (DSP) based PSK demodulator. It describes the mathematical modeling of PLL and Costas loop. These models are to be first realized using MATLAB code and then the simulation using VHDL code is done. Results show that the Costas loop could correctly realize BPSK signals carrier recovery and data demodulation. The work also highlights the programmable nature of the design.
