NMTHI Organizational Strategic Plan: Northern Michigan Teen Health Initiative

Teen sexual health and education is an important topic often ignored largely in part to our cultures taboo surrounding serious conversations about teen sex. In Michigan, schools are required to provide information regarding sexually transmitted infections (STI) and abstinence must be taught as the best method to prevent STIs (Michigan Department of Education, 2007). There are no state acts preventing schools from taking the initiative to develop a more comprehensive sexual education program, but current statistics related to teen pregnancy and STIs show a need for improved educational measures. As this group has previously explored, rates of teen pregnancy in Kalkaska County are among some of the highest in the state of Michigan and the countys schools provide abstinence-only sexual education (District Health Department #10 [DHD#10], 2012). It is within the best interest of the countys health care providers, such as Munson Healthcare, to provide the necessary resources to reduce these rates of teen pregnancy and STIs. Services NMTHI will provide educational courses and access to community resources, free of charge, to participating school systems. Registered nurses will travel to area schools to evaluate the current state of sexual health education and knowledge of the students. The curriculum will cover topics such as pregnancy prevention, STI prevention, safe sexual practices, abstinence, relationship communication skills, and resources available in the community. Additionally, nurse educators will provide information regarding personal growth and development, encouraging adolescents to pursue their genuine interests for educational and career attainment. For decades, research has shown that low educational attainment is largely correlated with increased teenage pregnancy rates (Moore & Waite, 1977; Ruedinger & Cox, 2012). Topics will

NMTHI

be adjusted according to age so that education can be provided across multiple age groups in an appropriate manner. Mission Statement Our mission is simple: we wish to improve the condition of sexual health and knowledge of our communitys adolescents by coordinating with the areas school systems to provide educational opportunities and access to resources. Philosophy NMTHI believes that young men and young women are equally responsible for making decisions about their sexual activity and their actions to prevent pregnancy and STIs. To empower young adults to make responsible life choices, we must provide them with access to comprehensive and effective sexual health education, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual identity and socioeconomic status. Additionally, adolescents should be inspired to excel and take advantage of all opportunities that life may offer to improve educational and career pursuits. Initiative Goals and Objectives NMTHI developed four main goals and objectives that provide the foundation for measurement. NMTHIs outcome statements define what goals the initiative is trying to accomplish. The objectives are clear, concise, precise, and measurable actions that support the established goals. Our goals and objectives allow for NMTHI to gauge performance, improve performance, and manage accountabilities. Goals (1) Ensure that teens have knowledge to access resources within their community. (2) Serve as an expert in adolescent pregnancy, prevention, and healthy sexual development.

NMTHI

(3) Provide sources and supportive materials, training, and technical assistance to school systems. (4) Promote cultural shift within the community to recognize the ability of young adults to make informed choices regarding their sexual health Objectives (1) Increase number of teens educated on sexual health throughout Northern Michigan. (2) Decrease rates of teen pregnancy within the schools NMTHI works with. (3) Reach out to all Northern Michigan schools during NMTHIs first year of practice to showcase services. (4) Increase knowledge of community resources available to young adults. Budget Proposal See: Appendix III Conclusion NMTHIs goals are to increase the sexual health knowledge base among teens in Northern Michigan as well as reduce the number of pregnancies and STIs. NMTHI aims at promoting healthy sexual lifestyles and providing resources to make that possible. With dedicated registered nurses from Munson Healthcare, this goal can be attainable for struggling Northern Michigan school districts. Adequate resources and funding to promote this initiative will open the doors of opportunity for many schools that do not have the means necessary to provide sexual education amongst teens. Teens will be provided with support from visiting nurses to empower them in making responsible healthy life and sexual choices. Opportunities for growth within communities should start with the most vulnerable populations; teens. Reducing teen pregnancy rates will in return reduce poverty levels and allow teens a chance at healthy growth and development.
