February 27th, 2014/Thursday Lesson #2 of 4 Review Bump and Set/Serve in Volleyball Mr. Gerry East Longmeadow High School A. Teaching Behaviors: For each teaching behavior, reflect on what went well AND what needs improvement AND why. You are NOT reiterating what you taught! 1. Planning/Preparation The planning and preparation for this lesson were both great and fit the needs of the lesson very well. While planning, I planned to have 20 students; instead I had 25 students which was not a problem because I just changed the size of the groups. In preparation, I had enough equipment and enough room for all students to receive the maximum number of OTRs and everyone had an equal chance to participate in bumping, setting, and serving. Also, with the way I set up the activities all of the students had to be involved in bumping, setting, or serving in order for their team to succeed. From this lesson I could see that I planned the activities well enough that the students had a good motivational objective to work with and this kept the students on task. 2. Lesson Content

The content of this lesson worked well with the skills of the students. These students have played the game of volleyball before and this made it easier to teach them. The students knew the bump and the set very well and knew most of the skill cues that I was planning to teach them for those skills. In this lesson, I got lucky because I had a female who plays volleyball for East Longmeadow and she was able to really understand and help her group, who was struggling. The students seemed to enjoy serving because it was a challenge for them, they were excited to try both underhand and overhand serving, and once the serve happened the students could get into some quick gameplay. The students really seemed to like the modified game I used at the end of the lesson. This is probably because it was very similar to gameplay. Also, the students enjoyed keeping track of the score and competing against one another. The students understood that one serve is not better than the other, it is all just preference. Students understood why its important to follow through when serving, face the net while serving, and watch their hand make contact with the ball; this was shown when students answered questions at the end of the lesson. 3. Transition/Classroom Management

Transitions were very minimal as I set up the activities so that students wouldnt need to transition all that much. The few transitions that I had to use went very smoothly and when I saw students dragging I told them, pick up the pace and students started moving faster. In terms of management I need to do a better job of equipment distribution and clean up. I forgot to have 1 student from each group get a volleyball for their group while transitioning from the informing to activity #1. Instead, I had to go pick up the volleyballs and pass them out to the groups which probably wasted some time. I did a better job than my last lesson with equipment pick up; however, I still need to improve. I had the students bring the volleyballs and place them up against the wall right before the closure. Instead, I should have had the students put the volleyballs back in the bag where they belong. 4. Content Delivery I feel as though I delivered the content very well to the students. The students understood what I was explaining and any questions the students had were cleared up through demonstrations as well as the students asking any questions they had. I made the skill cues simple and easy for the students to remember as well as provided very adequate and effective demonstrations using other students and myself. For some students, the hardest part of the

lesson was hitting the serve overhand, I think this is a coordination and timing problem. I explained to these students that the underhand serve is just as good and effective. The students understood what part of the hand to use for both types of serve as well as where to follow through; I knew this because of how well the students answered the questions at the end of the lesson. 5. Feedback given by you to the Students The only part of the lesson where I feel I needed to provide more feedback was during the boot camp, in particular during the bodyweight squats because some students did not have all of their weight on their heels. Other than that I feel as though my feedback for this lesson was awesome. I gave the students a ton of corrective feedback, mainly with the serve; I did not give as much corrective feedback for the bump and set because the students didn't need it. I also gave the students a lot of positive feedback to keep them motivated and on task. During the bump and set I mainly used positive specific and positive general feedback but I did use some corrective feedback when explaining the importance of communication. The feedback really seemed to be beneficial to the students because once I gave them feedback, what I gave them feedback on was fixed and instead of using corrective feedback I was able to change it to positive specific feedback.

Feedback you received from Cooperating Teacher Ms. DeLeone did not provide much feedback because she was told not to

tell me too much about my lesson. With that being said, she did say that for the last activity(modified game), I should have had all of the students on one team serving at once. Originally this is what I had planned; however, Dr. Mangano told me not to do this because it would be unsafe. Mr. Gerry told me that he thought the lesson went very well, I showed enthusiasm, and the students really liked the lesson. Mr. Gerry just recommended that I have the students take care of the equipment because the students need to show responsibility and that is a good way to do so. I was surprised when Mr. Gerry told me that I displayed enthusiasm while teaching because this is something that I usually struggle with and I feel uncomfortable when I do show enthusiasm; however, today I did not feel uncomfortable while I was being more enthusiastic than normal and I had a lot of fun teaching this lesson.

B. Final paragraph - discuss what was/were the most important thing(s) that you learned while teaching today. From teaching this lesson, I learned that when teaching high school I need to be loose and have fun. During my first teaching episode I was really

stiff and the students could see that and my first lesson did not go as well as I wanted; however, during this lesson I was loose, having fun, and showed enthusiasm which made the students more enthusiastic and interested in the lesson. Also, I relearned the lesson of how important it is to use enthusiasm while teaching because the students feed off of the energy that their teacher brings; only this time I learned the lesson in a positive way. I became friendly with these students and got to know them on a more personal level and I feel as though this made the students gain more respect for me; which in turn made them focus more on the lesson, stopped side conversations, and eliminated all behavioral issues.
