Setting Quote Paragraph:

Assignment:
Write a paragraph about the setting of your novel-making a connection to the authors purpose and their writing craftsmanship. Use the following steps to guide you through the process: 1. Choose the best quote from your book, so far, that depicts your novels setting. 2. Begin by explaining why your quote is important. What is its significance to the development of setting in the novel? 3. Include the direct quote in your paragraph. 4. How does the quote relate to the novel itself? Put it in context. 5. Highlight 2 literary elements that the author has used to make the quote stand out. Make sure to directly reference the literary elements in your novel. 6. Explain why you think the author used these two literary elements? What does it do for the quote or what does it say about the author? 7. Make a prediction regarding how your novels setting will be important to the development of the characters and themes of the book.

Example:
In the first chapter of Mockingjay, Suzanne Collins creates a vivid description of District 12 and the devastating destruction that Katniss Everdeen encounters when she returns to her home. Katniss is confronted by a town of ash and the remains of those who were unable to escape : Some were incinerated entirely. But others, probably overcome with smoke, escaped the worst of the flames and now lie reeking in various states of decomposition, carrion for scavengers, blanketed by flies (8). As she walks down the once familiar streets of 12, Katniss is consumed with guilt and the realization that her actions are responsible for this firestorm of retribution (8). Collins draws the reader in to the story with her use of imagery and diction. The phrase now lie reeking in various states of decomposition (8) evokes our sense of smell and memory of when we ourselves encountered something rotten and terrible. Meanwhile, Collins word choice and phrasing of carrion for scavengers, blanketed by flies (8) jars the reader and cause us to pause for a moment, and perhaps even go back and reread the sentence. It is important to recognize that she wants readers to take note and recognize the dead, just as Katniss is. Collins careful writing of the Mockingjays setting reinforces its importance to character and thematic development, because without Katniss emotional connection to District 12 she would not be galvanized into action against the Capitol. As well, the firebombing of 12 is just one of many examples used to communicate the themes of power and control, while Katniss response illustrates the ultimate drive for the underdog to overcome insurmountable odds.
