Yareli Palma ELED 300 Laura Isbell, PhD February 4, 2014 Module 1 Paper There are many important

elements that come together when teaching. What I have come to see is that many of these concepts are overlapping and intertwined with different competencies. The concepts from the chapters that I will discuss are effective teaching, student diversity and classroom management in relation to the competencies 1, 2, 5 and 6. The concept that stuck out the most to me from chapter one was the idea of effective teaching. Effective teaching means many things and not all effective teachers teach in the same way or run their classrooms the same way. What is understood is that students and student learning are the primary focus of effective teaching. I believe this shows a strong relationship with Competency 1 Human Development because an effective teacher understands the process of human development and with that knowledge a teacher is able to plan lessons as well as assessments that go along with the developmental needs of his/her students. The other competency that I believe relates to this idea of effective teaching is Competency 6 Classroom Management. An effective teacher will understand the developmental needs of the students and this will help them understand how to manage their classroom. From the second chapter the concept that truly stood out to me was student diversity. Student diversity is in every classroom in many different ways. I feel that this idea of student diversity most relates to competencies 2 Student Diversity and 5 Safe Environment. Within chapter two different types of diversities are discussed. Diversity does not necessarily mean

students of different races although this is a common type of diversity. Diversity includes those students with learning disabilities or special needs as well as those from different cultural backgrounds. A teacher will use diversity to promote learning and that is why I believe this idea is so closely tied with Competency 2. I also believe its closely tied in with competency 5 because as I read in chapter 2 a teacher must be able to accommodate all of his/her students and not isolate those students with different needs. A teacher who is able to reach a diverse group of students will make them feel safe so that they can become productive. The final concept that I will discuss is from chapter 3 and it is the idea of classroom management. Classroom management involves many things such as lesson plans, rules and procedures. I feel that this idea most closely relates to competencies 2 student diversity and 6 classroom management. I believe this idea most closely ties in with competency 6 because I read many different strategies for creating a classroom that has routines in place so that all students may be productive and student behavior can be monitored. I also believe it is most closely related to competency 2 because when planning classroom management a teacher must take into consideration those diverse students in her class so that all students will comprehend the procedures and expectations of the teacher. These are only a few of the concepts of teaching that I discovered while reading chapters 1, 2 and 3. The competencies overlap in their relation to different concepts and almost each competency could be argued to relate to each element. This reading has shown me that all of the concepts of teaching are somehow related and go hand in hand.
