Lesson 9.

Chapter 9 : Rational Exponents & Roots

Standards: 2.0 Students understand and use such operations taking a root, and raising to a fractional power. They understand and use the rules of exponents. 12.0 Students simplify fractions with polynomials in the numerator and denominator by factoring both and reducing them to the lowest terms.

Lesson 9.4: Addition & Subtraction of Radical Expressions

Objectives:
Within the learning period, I will be able to 1. Add and subtract radicals. 2. Construct golden rectangles from squares.

Definition
Two radicals are said to be similar radicals if they have the same index and the same radicand. Rule: To add or subtract radical expressions, put each in simplified form and apply the distributive property if possible. We can add only similar radicals. We must write each expression in simplified form for radicals before we can tell if the radicals are similar.

Remember!

radicand

You can add and subtract terms that have the same radicand.
