Paraprofessional Plan February 23, 2014 Morning Math Group Setting and Materials Setting: When: 9:00-9:45 am Where:

The back table in fourth grade general education classroom room 22 Who: you and four students in group What youll need: behavior expectations poster whiteboard dry erase marker eraser 4 copies of assessment (see end of document) What each student will need: (four students in group) whiteboard dry erase marker eraser a copy of assessment (at end) Lesson Objective: When presented with ten 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems without regrouping, students will solve the problems using the break apart method with 100% accuracy. Lesson Opening (9:00-9:05) 1. Gain attention from students Students, eyes on me. 2. Go over behavior expectations poster.have one student read each expectation and ask students to share examples of each expectation. (Students should be familiar with these expectations) Follow directions Stay on Task Use materials appropriately Participate 3. Tell students what the learning target is for day: Students, the learning target for today is to use the break apart method and the standard algorithm to solve two digit by two digit multiplication problems without regrouping.

Lesson Middle (9:05-9:30)

Teacher Actions BREAK APART METHOD (You model) 1. Show this problem on whiteboard 12 x 13 2. Say I will model this problem using the break apart method. First, I need to draw a big box and then draw four equal boxes inside that box. (Draw box and smaller box)

Students Actions/Responses Listen to modeling of the problem

Then I need to break the two numbers in the problem into two smaller problems. I will do this by breaking twelve into ten and two. I will break thirteen into ten and three. I will write these smaller numbers on the sides of the boxes. (Draw graphic below) I will multiply the numbers on the corresponding sides of the squares and write the answer in a small box. For this problem, I multiplied 10x10 to get 100, 3x10 to get 30, 10x2 to get 20 and 2x3 to get 6.

Say Now that I have multiplied all that, I need to add up all the numbers in the small boxes. I will add 100+30+20+6=? Show addition on whiteboard 100
30 20 +6

Add numbers together to get final product

2. STUDENTS PRACTICE WITH YOU Say Now that I have modeled how to solve the problem using the break apart method, I want us to try some problems ourselves. Here is the problem we will do together (write on whiteboard, instruction students to copy problem) 45 x11 Ask What is the first step I should do now that I know the problem? Say Everyone draw a big box with four small boxes insides just like I showed you earlier. (Allow time to complete) Say Okay now that we have drawn our boxes, how should we break apart these two number in the problem. Please turn and talk to your partner and break apart these two numbers. When you are ready, please raise your hand. (Students talk in partners and write on whiteboards) Talk to partner, write answers on whiteboard, raise hand Copy the problem onto whiteboard

Students: Draw a big box with four small boxes

Draw boxes

Ask Who would be willing to show us how they broke apart their numbers? Student:

Show answer to group on whiteboard

Say That is a great way to break apart our numbers. What is the next step in the problem? *If students are incorrect with breaking apart their numbers, have a student who was correct explain their thinking. Great. Everyone multiply your answers into the smaller boxes and raise your hand when you are ready. (Allow time for everyone to finish) Who would be willing to show what answers they got?

Students: Multiply the numbers that correspond with each small box

Volunteer to show answers

*If students are incorrect, have a student who was correct explain their thinking.

Show thumbs up or down for matching answers

Students: 495

Say You multiplied correctly. Who else got those answers? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no. Say Now we are ready to add our answers in the boxes together. Please do so now and raise your hand when done. (allow time to finish)

Work with partner to solve problems; check with pair to see if answers match

Everyone, what was your final answer? *If students are incorrect, have a student who was correct explain their thinking. PARTNER WORK Write these problems on a whiteboard 37 12 x11 x14 Prompt students to work on these problems with a partner, when done students check with another pair to see if their answers match Say Students get with a partner. You and your partner will work together to solve the first problem. When you are done, check with another pair to see if your answers match. If they do move onto the next problem.

ASSESSMENT (9:30-9:45) Each student will need one copy of the assessment (see end of document) Say Here is your test. You have until 9:45 to finish. Turn the assessment into me when you are finished.

Allow students as much time up to 9:45 to finish When finished students turn in assessments to you. There is a checklist called Checklist for Break Apart Method. Please make four copies of the checklist and attach one to each assessment after students are finished. I will need the checklist to review the students use of the strategy later. Please grade the assessments as they are turned into you. An answer key is attached at the end of the document. If the student got the answer correct, the problem is considered correct. Please fill in the amount correct for each student in the chart below.

Step 3

Break apart top number in the problem into two smaller numbers; write on one side of the box (For example: 24 would become 20 and 4) Break apart bottom number in the problem into two smaller numbers; write on other side of the box Multiply the two numbers and record in smaller box 1

Step 5

Step 6 Step 7 Step 8

Multiply the two numbers and record in smaller box 2 Multiply the two numbers and record in smaller box 3 Multiply the two numbers and record in smaller box four Add numbers in all four boxes together to get final product

Step 9

ANSWER KEY: 1= 979 2= 396 3= 288 4= 154 5= 858
