Alisha Reeve MUSE 376 Choral Methods Citation Directing the Choral Music Program Chapter 11: Organizing

g Performances Kenneth H. Phillips 2004 In todays performance based ensemble world, concerts are extremely important. They help fund a program, provide a means of expressing the hard work that students have put in, provide a creative outlet, are a means of recruitment, and often provide entertainment and interest to the community. The planning of a concert can make or break its success. This chapter discusses the best practices for planning such an event. It talks about programming the concert and the ways in which to order the pieces. It also discusses how long a concert should be and which ensembles should be included and when the ensembles should be programmed. It also discusses preplanning such as the creation of programs, the tuning of the piano, and consent for students to be photographed or videotaped. Finally, choral tours, festivals, and field trips are discussed. For me, the planning of a concert has always seemed second nature, I often helped with this for my own high school choir and generally made the programs. Within programs I feel alongside the pieces being performed and the various ensemble member names, there should also be information about each piece. This will help to make the concert educational to the audience and show that the ensembles have learned more than just some pretty songs. The information on tours and festivals will be very useful for me to reference in the future. Ive have never taken part in a tour and have only been involved in festivals close to the schools I

attended. It will be nice to have a resource to refer to when planning such events for my own ensembles in the future.
