Grade 1 Science Life Science: Needs and Characteristics of Living Things Outcome 100-8: Identify and describe common characteristics of humans, other animals, and plants, and identify variations that make each person, animal and plant unique. Outcome 202-2: Place animals and plants in groups according to one or more characteristics. Activity: Students will be given cut out pictures of animals/plants (one set for each category.) They will then be asked to chart the animals/plants depending on the animals characteristics (eyes, legs, ears, etc.) The pictures will be glued in place on the chart. As students complete the activity, the checklist can be used as the teacher walks around the classroom and observes the students.

Grade 1 Science Life Science: Needs and Characteristics of Living Things Outcome 100-6: describe ways that humans use their knowledge of the needs of living things. Activity: Have all students plant a seed inside a cup. After explaining the steps of the activity go around the room to check off which students have successfully used the knowledge on the needs of living things to help the plant grow. Have students make a poster about what they need to grow their plant (use their lists/posters to assess if theyve included all the necessary needs.) The coloring and artwork of the poster can be assigned for homework.
