WHAT IS NATIONALISM?

Nationalism is the desire for self-rule (independence from anothers rule) and strong feeling for ones country. loyalty and devotion to a nation a sense of the actions that the members of a nation take in seeking to achieve (or sustain) some form of political sovereignty (independence).

WHAT IS INDEPENDENCE?
Independence is when a country is not under the control of anothers rule. (political sovereignty). National consciousness exalting (praising) one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis (main focus) on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations

HOW DID NATIONALISM LED TO INDEPENDENCE IN INDIA?

In the 1800s India was being ruled by the British and the people of India were upset because they were being treated like second class citizens in their own country. The best jobs and education were reserved for the British. The people of India could not weave cloth out of their cotton. They had to send the cotton to Britain and then buy the cloth from the British.

India slowly gained independence through nationalistic movements and non-violent rebellions as well as through Gandhis leadership and belief in non-violent protest through civil disobedience.

HOW DID NATIONALISM LEAD TO INDEPENDENCE IN VIETNAM?

Nationalism led to independence in Vietnam through the leadership of Ho Chi Minh and his Vietminh League. They fought the French and gained control of their own country.

HERE IS THE STORY!

The French controlled Vietnam in the 1900s because they wanted their seaports and the area was rich in agricultural products and natural resources. The people in Vietnam had worked hard to stay free from the rule of China their powerful neighbor to the north. Ho Chi Minh thought communism was the best route to take which landed him in jail and he had to leave the country to avoid the death penalty.

Ho Chi Minh formed the league called the Vietminh League. In 1954 the French surrendered control to Ho Chi Minh. The Geneva Conference was help because the United States and other European countries were concerned and protested Ho Chi Minh ruling Vietnam. The U.S. saw him as a communist!

Vietnam was divided into to parts. Ho Chi Minh would rule the north and the U.S. would take the south part of Vietnam. The southern people of Vietnam began to sympathize with the northern people and wanted the county to be one. In April 1975, the U.S. last helicopter left Vietnam and the country became the Republic of Vietnam after many American lives were lost in the country of Vietnam.

WHAT IS A NON-VIOLENT PROTEST?


Non-violent protest to peacefully refuse to cooperate; belief or practice of peaceful methods in pursuit of any goal (lack or absence of violence in protesting). Examples: Boycott, Gandhis hunger strikes, etc.

Civil Disobedience the refusal to obey unfair laws even if the result was punishment.

WHO WAS MOHANDAS GANDHI?
