Ans: If your client is living in aged care home and receives Govt. funded aged care services in their won home and would like to speak to someone about their rights, then your client or client representative can contact any of the advocacy services.

21. How do you assist an older person with skin problems manage this problem?

Ans: Use sunscreen when going outside. Wear a hat and long sleeve shirt when in the sun. Use moisturiser if the skin is dry, do proper dressing if required. Apply skin ointment on a daily basis.

Ageing in place was one of the specified objectives of the changes to the Australian aged care system which came about with the introduction of the Commonwealth Aged Care Act, 1997. What was the main objective of this policy?

Ans: The main objective of this policy was to explore the changes in services which were formely hostel type services prior to the reform.

Ans: It was more cost effective service It has the increasing interest in the quality of life for the elderly. 23. What is category Resident Classification Scale (CRCS) and how and what is it used for?

Ans: It is a classification system, designed to distribute funding equitably across the residential aged care sector.

24. Maria holds a view that the elderly people in a Nursing home should not be allowed to have sex as they are weak and they have lost the desire. Why do you think Maria should keep this view to herself? (EK P, Q)

The social model of disability is a concept which recognises that some individuals have physical or psychological differences which can affect their ability to function in society. However the social model suggests it is society that causes the individual with these physical or psychological differences to be disabled. In other words individuals with impairments are not disabled by their impairments but by the barriers that exist in society which do not take into account their needs. These barriers can be divided into three categories: environmental, economical and cultural (British Council of Disabled People). Assessment Instrument 2-Case Studies


Case Study 1 Jose has been accepted in a Fariji Nursing home low care section. He is relieved that finally most of the issues he has been struggling with will be minimised (falls and burns while cooking due to poor sight) He has a good saving and expects to live comfortably in his old age. He has after all looked after himself in a fairly reasonable manner, going for holidays, camping, etc and he hopes this lifestyle will continue but in a different version. Jose loves life and wants to be happy. When Joses sister came to look for a vacancy, he did not receive any written information on the services offered by the facility and only got a verbal vacancy availability. On admission, no care planning took place, joses details were roughly entered in the register at the reception and he was shown his room. To his utter shock though, he realises that what he dreamt of was only a pipe dream. His first shock was getting a carer to assist with his daily needs that could not speak English at all. It was a nightmare conversing with this carer through whom he was expected to at least make known his other preferences. He also does not like the quality of the food Fariji Nursing home provides and thinks it is cheap and tasteless. He has complained that he would like a change at least in his daily routine as it is so rigid but he feels that no one is paying attention to him. He is particularly not happy that they almost forced him to go for a meditation class within the facility the other day. Even though attending this exercise was not put as a must, he felt there was so much pressure to attend, indirectly from all who talked about its benefits particularly for the elderly. He has requested Regina, his 67 years old sister to check out for other facilities as he would like to move out. Reginas answer is disheartening as what else is available is full, a bit more costly that Jose cannot afford and/or having a particular group of people it caters for e.g. Spanish speaking clients and so it would mean his language problems with his carer would only be multiplied if he moved out. He is very frustrated as he feels His views do not count when he shares them with the management of Fariji Nursing home He is not consulted when changes are made concerning his routine and recreational activities He cannot predict what will happen tomorrow He is growing thin and losing appetite due to the meals that are presented to him on a daily basis.

The Owner of Fariji Nursing Home thinks that Jose and other residents who are complaining are being fussy, after all, this is how he has operated for the last 2 years. He even thinks that the residents and their families are being racist (as he is from China) and says he will not change the way I operate as I think it is fair.

Case study 2 (PC 3.4) Jack and Jill are twin brothers. They have had pretty much the same upbringing, gone to the same school, studied similar disciplines (Social work), married from the same culture, goes to church, likes socialising, loves meat pies, loves attention, and are now both in the same nursing home but in different rooms. Though sounding so much alike, why do you think the two should be treated as individuals? Ans: Their needs would be different even though they are alike.

Case study 3 As part of participating in quality in your workplace, you have all been told that once you identify a hazard, you need to complete a hazard form and inform your supervisor. You are an experienced carer and have been buddied up with a student who has come to your facility for placement for her Cert III in Aged Care qualification. Student cannot understand why she has to be bothered once she finds a broken chair as she has not been trained as a carpenter. She asks you how by filling the hazard form and informing the supervisor will improve the quality in the Nursing Home. Give at least one reason that will be contained in your answer

Ans: If she will fill up the hazard form then it will come into the notice of everyone that chair is broken and a handyman will fix it, so no one will be harmed or injured by the use of that broken chair. Case study 4 Marjory is 90 years old and living at home with the help of carers. You happen to be one of the carers who attend to her from Wednesdays to Sunday and the other Carer Lucia cares for her for the rest of the week. You report on duty one Wednesday and Marjory is obviously grieving. You ask her what has happened and she lets you know that after you left on Sunday her favourite pet bullet, named by her late husband died after being poisoned. Bullet has been very special to Majory especially since her husband passed on 2 years ago. Bullet has been Marjorys main comfort as it reminds her of most of her late husbands special moments with the family and Bullet. What is of great concern to Marjory is that when she had informed Lucia of the loss, Lucia had told Marjory to get over it and move on with life, it was only a dog and not a human being. Lucia comes from another country where dogs are not treated as pets but as guard dogs and nobody cares whether they are fed or not, whether they are sick or not and mostly they survive by eating the food remains from their keepers or butcheries wastes. How do you think Lucia should have communicated to Marjory? Give at least 2 examples: (PC 7.1, 7.2)

Ans: Lucia should talk to her in a calm way and could ask about the meomries she had with the dog, so that she could be relieved a bit. She could have asked her in a polite way if she wanted to do something in the memory of the dog.

Ans: The process involves self-assessment, review or assessment of performance against predetermined standards y an external independent body and monitoring of ongoing performance. The main elements are the full audits and unannounced visits.
