RIGGING SAFETY ACCESSIBILITY HEALTH AND SAFETY LEGISLATION

HSEs; the health and safety at work etc act 1974 has put laws in place that protects the key areas and features of working in theatre. Working at height; HSE state that employees must use equipment to fit the safety requirements of working at height; use ladders, Tallescopes, Zargees. Manual Handling; HSE state, Reducing the amount and severity of manual handling is a legal obligation. HSE ensure employers create systems of manual handling that will reduce risk and are more safe to their employees. An example of this is; loading equipment in and out of the lorry, a metal board be layed down between the ground and the lorry to take the weight of the equipment.
PPE

HSE have individual assessments for, incase of a fire, if venues have systems in place and are aware of what to do when in a fire. Venues must have accessible and easy fire exits that are also accessible to any disabled people. The assessments include; how to carry out a fire risk assessment and identify the general fire precautions the venue need to have in place. Some of the equipment and precautions required are; suitable storage of flammable liquids, ventilation systems that dilute or remove flammable gas or vapour, extraction systems to remove combustible materials such as wood dust .

HSE are an English national independent agency which are there to reduce deaths and serious injuries across Britain's workplaces. They do this by laying down laws for businesses to stick by. For staging specifically, there are responsibilities for who ever is controlling the construction of the staging and lighting etc. An example of some of the HSE responsibilities if you are working on sight are; to cooperate with others ad co-operate with others to ensure safety and report obvious risks of safety.

Personal protective equipment. PPE is simply the equipment needed for your safety when working in an area you are exposed to risk. This includes; protective clothing (gloves, steal cap boots etc.), respirators, eye protection. Employees are expected to provide their own PPE equipment when on a job. It is the boss responsibility to ensure all employees are aware of PPE and how to use this equipment correctly.

The Disability discrimination act is there to make sure Employees with disabilities share the same general employment rights as other workers. The act states that some areas in employment could justify not employing an employee with a disability. One of these areas could well be concert production and staging considering what job and area the employee would be working in and what danger they could face.

PRS is needed when opening, for example, a theatre concert. PRS state that; The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 means that if you use copyright music in public to lawfully do so you require the permission of the copyright owner for every piece of music that is being performed. This is for artists who choose to play covers on the night/event.
